CRTDTO 1971.

Ainsi constitu essentiellement par les parlers de Kano et de Sokkoto, ce recueil devait, pour couvrir lensemble de la langue et de la civilisation des Hawsa, tre complt par des textes labors partir des dialectes du Niger. Aussi, dans le cadre de deuxime Stage rgional de formation linguistique runi Niamey en aot 1968 par lUnesco, M. Muhammadu Hambali du Centre nigrien de Recherches en Sciences Humaines a-t-il rdig Zaman gidaa da zaman waje et Inaa duuniyaa ta saa gabaa. Aprs correction et enrichissement de ces divers apports, le recueil fut valu et mis en forme dfinitive par les experts de langue hawsa runis cette occasion. Principalement ralis intention des adultes nouvellement alphabtiss, le manuel de lecture que nous prsentons ici se propose essentiellement dillustrer, en vue de diffuser la transcription standard et les rgles dorthographe recommandes par la Confrence linguistique consultative de Bamako. Nous souhaitons que ses divers utilisateurs lamliorent avec lusage et contribuent, leur tour, par leurs propres apports autant que par recueil des traditions orales et des manuscrits des Hawsaphones de toutes les rgions et de tous les temps, enrichir le matriel ducatif de Nos Services et centres nationaux dalphabtisation ; ils participeront ainsi, esprons-nous, la coopration culturelle entre les peuples et les pays que se propose de promouvoir et dvelopper le Centre rgional de Documentation pour la Tradition orale ;

INTRODUCTION
Like all the other books in the series of Readers of the Regional Documentation Centre for Oral Tradition, the selection of texts we present here is the outcome of a series of preliminary work originating from the Consultative Linguistic Conference organized in Bamako in March 1966 with the help of Unesco. It was this Conference in fact, which, after preparing a standardized transcription of the Hawsa language, recommended the preparation of Readers and Anthologies for the benefit of newly literate adults. In September 1966, Unesco organized in Niamey, at the request of a number of Member States from West Africa, the first Regional Course in African Linguistics, and entrusted Mr. Naybi Sulaymaan Waali, Principal, Adult Education Officer of the State of Kano (Northern Nigeria), with the task of writing of collecting, all over the country, representative texts of the cultural heritage of the Hawsa people. It was on this occasion that he prepared, under international contract, Na gari na kowaa and Raayuwar Annabi Muhammadu, which he presented, in April 1967, to the meeting of the group of experts for the elaboration of teaching material for literacy courses in Africa, held in the Unesco Building.

The Anthology, based essentially on the dialects of Kano and Sokkoto as it was, had to be supplemented with texts based on the dialects of Niger, so that it may cover the whole area of the Hawsa Language and Civilisation. It is for this reason that Dr. Muhammadu Hambali, of the Research Centre on Human Sciences in Niger, wrote, within the framework of the second Regional Training Course in Linguistics organized by Unesco in Niamey in August 1968, Zaman gidaa da zaman waje and Inaa duuniyaa ta saa gabaa. After correction and enrichment of these divers contributions, the Anthology was appraised and given its final form by the experts of the Hawsa Language brought together for this purpose. Written principally for newly literate adults, the Reader we are presenting here intends essentially to illustrate, with the aim of diffusing, the standard transcription and spelling rules recommended by the Consultative Linguistic Conference of Bamako. We hope that its different users will ameliorate it with usage ,and will, in their turn, by their own contributions as well as by the collection of manuscripts and oral tradition of speakers of Hawsa of all regions and periods, contribute to enrich the educative material of our Services and National Literacy Centres; in this way, they will be participating we hope, in the cultural cooperation among peoples and countries, which the Regional Documentation Centre for Oral Tradition has set itself to foster and develop.
