Dear Friends in Christ,
Greetings from Puerto Rico, I'm sorry that uie have been so long in writing but this
has been the busiest summer that I have ever seen, sJpol finished on Way 25 with the
Kindergarten and Ninth grads graduations , Much effort was put into both those programs,
VBS started at the church the first week of June, We had an average attendance of 88,
which we thought was groat, Frank and Betty Brown from Carmi,Illinois visited for that first
week and thjy helped with the VBS,
I have been in charge of eleven youngcollege students this summer. They are working
both with the work in Caparra and in LeVittown, They helped with the VBS and then the
third week of June we visited the work in the Dominican Republic. Bob Gurwell and I
preached on four occasions and five people made responses to accept Christ as their
Savior,They are to be baptized soon. We visited some of the poorest places I have aver
seen and the people wore very responsive to our preaching. Wo distributed food one day
and the people were so thankful for what they got. Many of the college students had
never seen poverty like that and as wo loft that area many were crying. Most of us do
not realize how much God has blessed us until we are shocked into realizing it.
Two days after returning from the Dominican Republic I received a phone call from
my mother and she told me that my father was seriously Hi in the hospital. The doctors
at first though ha had suffered a stroke because ho had lost the use of the left side of
his body but they soon discovered that he has a brain tumor. Ho also has a spot on his
left lung and the doctors removed a malignant lymph node from his left side, I flew
home when I found out how serious it was, I am sure that bacaus of many prayars for him
he is much bettor now. Ha has received his first round of cobalt treatments and has
regained completely the use of his left side. He soon is to begin chemotherapy and I
would ask you to please remember him and my mother in your prayers. Pray that they both
will be able to withstand the tension and worry that this has caused,
I was gone about three weeks and I think that I got eight weeks behind in my work.
We have several new teachers coming down to work with us. They are :
Carol Hankins and Sandy lynch from Kentucky Christian College
Mr, and Mrs, Scot Pelton from Roanoko Bible College
Mr. and Mrs, Ken Byerly from Platte Valley Bible College
Ray Prager from Cincinnati Bible Collage
We have had one week of Junior Camp with 40 campers participating^I was gone while
thecamp was going on so Suzanne took over and did a great job. Last week we had a real
mountain top experience with the annual Caribbean Missions Clinic, Missionaries from
around the area came to preach and share ideas and prayer requests and we all were
thrilled to h^^ of the progress being made for the Lord In this area
This week the Churches of Christ on the island are involved in a week of Senior High
camp and all is going very well, Wa have about fifty campers and we are real pleased
with their attitudes about learning the Word of God, I am teaching in the mornings and then
going to work at the school and returning in the evenings for the evening programs.
We are going to have a meeting of the church leaders on Thursday evening and decide
some goals, for the future and where we want to get new work started on the island,
Suzanne and I have just made the down payment on our first home. It is much bigger
than the place that we had been renting and it is all ours, along with the bank,.
The payments are higher than the rent we were paying but wo feel it is a much wiser use of
the money that we have.
liile want to thank you all fmP your continued support of our work We appreciate
It greatly. Thank you for your prayers and please keep us and my parents in your prayers
in the future. God has blessed us all by letting us become His children and the very^
ufB can do is give Him the glory for all that we do in His name. We thank .^d
that he has called us hert< and we thank Him that you have seen fit to help in this
ministry. Thank you again and may God continue to bless you.
In Christ,
