INTRODUCTION EVENT PROGRAMME
Smart phones and other mobile
devices are hugely popular among
the younger generation. With young
people using them to access social
media networks or play games
and children as young as ve years
old using tablets and iPads with
condence. Its no wonder that
mobile technology is now being
embraced as a learning tool with
great popularity.
Not just students, but also todays teachers and
parents see its integration in the classroom as
providing variety, openings for individualised
instruction, and greater access to resources.
This new and innovative platform gives creative
teachers opportunity to develop new methods
to excite the children and achieve higher levels
of engagement. It also allows innovative
businesses to tap into a huge market.
This event aims to highlight some of the
achievements in Wales and the support available
to businesses, from CEMAS and other agencies,
to help them develop their products. CEMAS are
delighted to have the opportunity to host this
showcase event and hope it will encourage
the development of further educational apps
to promote Wales as a world-leader in this
new and evolving sector.

THE FUTURE
CLASSROOM TODAY
SPEAKERS:
The talk will look at how mobile devices,
apps and technology are now so important
in education and will tell the story of the
success of Casllwchwr Primary school who
were the rst school in Wales to adopt 1:1
iPad provision and how this success led to
the LIFE programme which has recently
picked up international and national awards
for its ground breaking work using mobile
devices in deprived areas of Swansea.
About Simon
Simon started his teaching career at Danygraig Primary
in Swansea before spending ten years at Gendros Primary
School Swansea. It was here that he developed an interest
in independent learning theories and started to learn
that schools should prepare for children and not the
other way around. In 2003 Simon became Deputy Head
at Casllwchwr Primary School and then Headteacher
in 2009. Simon, in my rst year as Headteacher, led the
school to a grade one in each of the seven key questions
during their ESTYN inspection in May 2010.
In Autumn 2010 the school embarked on a mobile
device learning program and the past three years have
been an incredible journey. The school picked up a Third
Millennium Learning Award in Jan 2012, the rst Welsh
primary to do so and one of only eight in the UK.
They were also awarded the Highly Commended UK
Impact Award at NAACE National Conference in March
2012 and were the only Welsh school nominated in any
category. Following this they were shortlisted in two
categories in 2013 and have been nominated in three
categories this year.
Simon is a member of the Welsh Government Practitioners
Panel, National Digital Learning Council and the WG ICT
Steering Group looking at the future of ICT in Wales.
Part of his remit is to advise on how to make Wales
a world leader in digital learning, advising the Minister and
Government over the next two years promises to be
a hugely exciting and rewarding journey. Currently
Executive Headteacher at Casllwchwr Primary, working
one day a week and LIFE programme manager for the
remainder of the week until April 2014. Simon has just
accepted a one day a week secondment working for
the Welsh Government as Learning In Digital Wales
Professional Adviser. His rst book, Freaked Out,
which is a clear guide to Digital Learning for the
bewildered teacher will be released later this year.
Simon is happily married to Helen and they have a
beautiful three year old daughter called Ella who is an iPad
expert! Simon has a huge passion for all sports, especially
rugby and represented Wales at several age groups at
schoolboy level and still enjoys playing a range of sports.

MOBILE SPACE: USING APPS
TO TEACH ASTRONOMY AND
SPACE SCIENCE
SPEAKERS:
Astronomy and space science are inherently
exciting and motivational STEM subjects.
Combining these with mobile technology
allows school students and the general
public to interact with cutting-edge
research, such as the European Space
Agency Gaia and Rosetta space missions.
Suitable background information, news
and educational resources can be delivered
through mobile apps, encouraging users to
engage with space and even participate in
aspects of the research programmes.
About Paul
Paul studied geophysics at Southampton University before
moving disciplines to astrophysics and gaining a PhD from
Southampton in 1993, studying star systems containing
black holes and neutron stars.
Following postdoctoral research at Southampton,
Paul was appointed Lecturer in Astronomy at Sussex
(1994-1999), before becoming the rst Head of
Education at the National Space Centre, Leicester
(1999-2001). He then moved back to Cardif, where he
was jointly Senior Lecturer at Glamorgan (2001-2003)
and Walter Hudson Senior Research Fellow at Cardif
University (2001-2005).
In addition, he has also been an Honorary Lecturer at
the University of Leicester; Honorary Senior Lecturer
at the Open University; Educational Programmes
Consultant at Techniquest, and Director of Education
and Public Outreach at Las Cumbres Observatory
Global Telescope, California.
Paul has spent over 20 years researching massive stars,
neutron stars and black holes, but now specialises in using
astronomy and space science to encourage students of all
ages to study science, technology, engineering and maths.
In this capacity, he has been the UK National Schools
Astronomer since 2001, and Director of the Faulkes
Telescope Project since 2002. In 2010 he was appointed
as the European Space Agency Space Ambassador
for Wales, acting as link between research, industry,
education and the general public.
Returning to the University of Glamorgan in 2009, he now
heads a group working in both astronomical research and
education, using robotic, Internet-controlled telescopes.

A WHIZ
WITH WORDS
SPEAKERS:
Biga John, of Educational Games Ltd,
will present Word Whiz an app currently
in development for the iPad with Sugar
Creative Studio. Players will have the choice
of English or Cymraeg, with other languages
to follow later. The game ofers several levels
of difculty for linking words of 3, 4, 5 or
6 letters. At the simplest level, it is a great
condence builder for early readers, or those
who are new to the language.

You can play on your own and try to improve
your score; or pit your wits against other
players. There is a handy online dictionary to
look up denitions, and a help feature when
youre stuck for words. And if youre learning
Welsh, for instance, youll be able to refer to
the bilingual dictionary (prepared with the
kind assistance of Bangor University) for the
English equivalent. A perfect app for any age,
both at school and at home.
About Biga
Biga has spent many years working in educational and
academic publishing, and in the 1980s produced Shivas
First Maths Programme for the BBC Micro. This consisted
of a carefully graded series of number and logic games
for primary schools. Some of the games were
subsequently produced as board games and sold
throughout schools and nurseries in the UK.
She recently set up Educational Games Ltd to
produce apps and learning materials. On moving
to Wales last year, Biga has started to learn Welsh
and will be using this app to improve her vocabulary!

ENHANCING EDUCATION THROUGH MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
BUILDING THE NEW
CWM SILCON WITH SCHOOLS
SPEAKERS:
Gone are the days when the world relied
upon a small corner of California to produce
the software we depend on. Mobile apps
have allowed bedroom programmers to
reach global markets with ease. This new
accessibility also means small organisations
like schools can make technology that they
need in the classroom and not be beholden
on what is produced in the marketplace.
It allows for more innovation and creates
opportunities for teachers to grow and
share their ideas with a larger audience.
Two Welsh medium primary schools in the
Rhondda Valleys have worked with a local
charity to create three iPad apps which
address specic needs in the classroom
for literacy and numeracy skills. In this
presentation, Ben Treharne-Foose from Big
Click will discuss his experience of working
with YGG Llwyncelyn and YGG Llyn Y Forwyn
and their journey of creating new technology
and how the entire school was involved.
About Ben
Ben is Digital Technologies Manager for Big Click
(Penrhys Partnership) and is a relative newcomer to the
world of app development and has approached it from
the perspective of supporting people and communities
to harness the opportunities of new technology. He has
been working in community development for more than
12 years, project managing support services for grassroots
initiatives in America, Japan and Wales. His training in
graphic/web design coupled with his experience of
working closely with community groups has culminated
in a new venture with Penrhys Partnership in the Rhondda
Valleys to develop technology with and for local people
including mobile apps and websites. Passionate about
empowering people and groups, Ben is encouraging small
groups and individuals in Wales to become creators of
technology rather than just consumers.
Having launched the Big Click project in 2011 for Penrhys
Partnership, Ben is now developing services to make
technology more accessible to SMEs through training and
development. He is also preparing children in RCT for the
careers of the future which includes the newly established
Beta Geeks technology club which explores programming,
robotics, game development and app development.

CAULDRON CATERS:
USING MODERN TECHNOLOGY
TO TACKLE CHILDHOOD OBESITY
SPEAKERS:
I decided to start Taste Wales because I am
passionate about good quality, nutritious
food. I get frustrated by the poor quality,
expensive fresh foods in the supermarkets,
let alone the rising number of processed
foods available, so I decided to use my
marketing skills to launch Taste Wales as
not only a fruit & veg box scheme business,
but to work with peers on providing my
followers and customers with delicious
healthy recipe ideas and advice on good
nutrition. My passion however lies with
children. The most upsetting thing to me
is seeing so many children with a bad diet,
which is likely to lead to a huge increase in
food related illnesses in the future. I decided
to develop Cauldron Caters mobile app to
help educate children on the importance
of nutrition. I want to make learning fun,
and I want to focus on the positives of
nutritious food. The future of Taste Wales
and Cauldron Caters is to work with adults
and children to change their eating habits, to
get them healthy and to work at battling the
rising levels of obesity.
About Nicola
Nicola is Proprietor of Taste Wales. A graduate of the
University of Glamorgan (now South Wales University)
having studied a Degree in Business Studies and Masters in
Marketing Nicola was fortunate to get a graduate job at BT
Government, spending 5 years working there as a Senior
ICT Consultant. The role involved liaising with the MoD
and the Welsh Government on providing ICT solutions
to t their needs, alongside internal marketing initiatives
to grow and develop the teams. Following her departure
Nicola began working for the South Wales Chamber of
Commerce growing not only the members involved in
the Chamber, but also the membership benets to help
companies in Wales. Nicola left the Chamber to go on
maternity leave and simply couldnt aford to go back to
work, having always wanted to work in a self-employed
capacity she decided it was the perfect time to take the
plunge. Nicola set up Taste Wales which is a non-organic
fruit and veg box scheme (high quality class 1 produce)
that delivers across South Wales. I now have 2 children
(son aged 15 months and daughter aged 3) and doing
what I do is great as I get to do it with my children.

HOW TO MAKE

RE-BUILDING
OUR CULTURAL
HERITAGE FOR
GENERATION XBOX
SPEAKERS:
During this talk he will discuss how to go
about developing products and growing
a business to the point where it is possible
to leave teaching and start a new career
in edtech.
About Duncan
Duncan Wilson was a teacher in a secondary school
for 16 years during which time he taught science and
ICT whilst also gaining valuable experience as Head of
Department and Head of Year. He started of by creating
online resources for his teaching practice but over the
last 6 years he worked as a full time teacher by day and
Teacherpreneur by night developing innovative web
based applications for the education sector. He started of
with 50 of his own money and is now running a company
with 5 employees and an annual turnover in excess of
150,000. Duncan won NDLE 2013 for Class Charts and
left teaching in September 2013 to focus on his business
Edukey Education.
Due to rapidly developing digital
technologies, our childrens learning habits
are evolving dramatically. YouTube tutorials,
video conferencing, mobile devices and
most importantly, video games, should be
embraced as viable, engaging educational
tools, instead of the anti-social stigma
they currently receive. Using my new game,
Iron as a case study, we will challenge
Mark Prenskys notion of Digital Natives
being taught by Digital Immigrants
as I endeavour to teach the youth of my
home-town about their rich, cultural
heritage via the medium of a video game.

TASTE WALES
Taste Wales was formed in May
2012 when proprietor Nicola
realised there was a gap in the
market for a non-organic fruit
and vegetable box scheme.
I realised as my business grew that
there are so many people who dont
know what to eat, get bored with
same old food and looking for new
meal inspiration, but what surprised
me more than anything was realising
the number of people who eat
processed foods, fast food, and what
was shocking was the number of
people sufering with food relating
illnesses. In turn I realised that if the
adults are eating in this way, then
those with children will be doing
so too. Hence my idea around the
mobile App as I felt this could be a
great way to help educate children
on the importance of healthy eating.
The Cauldron Caters mobile app

Programme provides short,
concise university courses,

are perfect for those who want to
attend university courses but are
unable to commit to full
