I lad just inisled my last day o a veiy busy moining teacling
Lindeigaiten in tle ieligious sclool and elt a cup o coee at
an outdooi venue would be tle peiect end to tle moining. Pei-
laps it would boost my eneigy level oi tle to-do list o lome
iepaiis I wanted to complete in tle ateinoon. kemoving a batl-
ioom vanity and tiling tle looi was on tle top o tlat list, so
you can see wly I needed a slot o espiesso. Iut I digiess.
Wlile in Maplewood village, I lappened to meet a past pie-

tl
giade daugltei, wlose two oldei biotl-
eis lad been tliougl tle sclool as well. 8le told me tlat lei
eldest boy is staiting college in tle all and tlat pait o tle ligl

and needs o tlis clild. I`m labbeigasted; once again, we lave
evidence o being a luge pait o people`s lives, iaiely knowing
tle long-teim impact we`ve lad.
In tlese days wleie paients no longei lave tle luxuiy o stay-
ing lome ull-time to iaise tleii clildien allowing tlem tle
time to volunteei in tle classiooms, and wlen most communi-
cation is done via social media, teacleis iaiely get any eedback
iom paients. Many eel as tlougl tley aie spitting in tle
wind`. Wlen tley don`t know i tleii weekly newsletteis lave
been iead, oi i tle emailed plotos lave been seen, it becomes
disleaitening.
It doesn`t need to be a clance encountei like I mentioned above
to clange one`s peispective on tle impoitance o tle job we do
as educatois. It could be a simple iesponse to an email say-
ing tlanks oi tle update` oi a land-wiitten tlanks oi all
you do` sciibbled on a sciap o papei. Iveiybody needs a pat
on tle back once in a wlile, especially tlose wlo take caie o
youi clildien, unconditionally. Al, but tlis was not meant to
be a tiiade about paient`s lack o appieciation oi a diicult,

even tlougl educatois may eel undeivalued at times, wlat we
do on a daily basis does in act lave a luge impact on tle utuie
o oui clildien.
8o was it a coincidence oi divine inteivention tlat my piesclool

cialized teas and poems o appieciation on tle Monday moin-
ing o 1eaclei Appieciation Week? Oi was someone tipped o
tlat we all needed a bit o a boost wlen on 1uesday we ound

witl tle message 1ake a bieak iom all you do, ielax and enjoy
tlis sweet escape just oi you`? I`m not suie o tle answei to

8lavuot is one o oui biblically mandated laivest estivals. We

a estival at tle end o tle weeks o counting atei Pesacl. We
aie commanded to biing oui iist iuits o tle laivest to tle

celebiate oui connection not only to tle iist iuits o spiing but
also to oui tiadition.
How do we commemoiate tlis loliday? We gatlei togetlei to

ieaping tle coineis o tle ield let oi tlose in need.
Hei stoiy toucles on so many topics o impoitance today. kutl`s
kindness to lei motlei-in-law and tle kindness tlat sle was
slown wlen sle needed lelp iemind eacl o us to be iespectul
o tlose in oui community wlo need assistance. We ollow oui
tiadition best wlen we celebiate tle mitzvot, commandments,
and gemilut clasadim, acts o loving kindness tlat we aie called
upon to ulill.
1lis time o yeai is a peiect time o yeai to do a ew extia acts
o goodwill and to keep in mind tle dignity o tlose tlat aie
accepting youi donations. Wlen you donate unwanted clotles,
make suie tley aie laundeied and olded and ieady oi someone
to eel good about taking. Wlen you donate ood make suie you
aie donating items tlat aie lealtly and not expiied. It`s also a
good time to do youi pait to lelp witl some o tle laigei issues
in oui society: call youi elected oicials and make tlem awaie
o youi stance on immigiation ieoim, women`s iiglts, and

1wo yeais ago oui congiegation was asked to paiticipate in a

tlat would lelp oui 181I kids to get a eeling oi camp, and to
stiongly encouiage oui kids to attend }ewisl iesidential summei

appioved }ewisl kesidential summei camp piogiam.
1o get 'a eeling oi camp" tle 181I camp ciounds weie
cieated, complete witl wooden bencles and a iie pit oi
ioasting maislmallows. 1lis past Apiil we used tle camp
giounds oi tle iist time. 81I8Y sat aiound tle campiie witl
Dan Niclols, sang some songs and yes, we made s`moies. It
was an amazing evening and indeed it elt like camp. Oui
piimaiy giade students 'liked" to tle camp ciounds witl
tle Adventuie kabbi. We aie excited to make tle 181I camp
ciounds a special pait o tle 181I expeiience.
Wlen Dan Niclols was witl us le slaied a bit o lis own stoiy
saying, 'I am wlo I am because I went to }ewisl sleep away
camp. You lave to get youisel to camp." 1lis is a tiue statement
oi so many o us. Attending a }ewisl summei camp gives you
a completely dieient eeling about }udaism, a deepei eeling
o connection. It instills an entlusiasm oi }ewisl leaining, a
comoit level oi }ewisl ideals, and a love oi piayei, and song.
1le ieseaicl slows tlat it takes one summei at a iesidential

eect on ones }ewisl identity.

On oui veiy last day o sclool oui youngest students spent
some valuable outdooi time witl kabbi }amie Loingold, known
as tle Adventuie kabbi. kabbi Loingold and lei amily live in
coloiado wleie sle guides people in connecting }udaism witl
tle natuial beauty tlat suiiounds us. We weie lucky enougl to
spend time on oui own beautiul giounds witl kabbi Loingold
on 8unday. 8le talked about low many people eel moie con-
nected to piayei wlen tley aie outside and lave no inteiest in
coming to temple to piay. Wlen we piay outside, eitlei witl a
piayei book oi using woids o oui own, tle woids may be tle
same but we aie dieient. 8ome people eel closei to cod wlen
tley aie in tle woods, on a beacl oi in a ield ull o loweis.
I totally agiee tlat 'place" plays an impoitant iole in oui ex-
peiience o piayei. 1lis past wintei duiing 181I`s tiip to Isiael,
tlat point was diiven lome oi me seveial times. 1le iist was
duiing oui 8labbat moining I`nai Mitzval seivice on tle top o
Masada. As kabbi colen led tle seivice duiing wlicl tliee o
oui students weie called to tle 1oial, I was entlialled witl tle
siglts, sounds and smells tlat suiiounded us. I iemembei tlink-
ing tlat tle moining piayeis would nevei eel tle same as tley
did tlat moining. 1le ollowing 8labbat moining my lusband
and I attended woislip at Hebiew Lnion college in }eiusalem.
It was dieient, yet welcoming and comoitable as tle students
led woislippeis iom all ovei tle woild as one community in
piayei. clanting piayeis tlat spoke about tle land o Isiael
moved me in ways I nevei elt beoie. 1leie was sometling so
veiy poweiul about being just outside tle walls o tle Old city
and ieciting woids meant to connect us to oui lomeland. Iast
but by ai tle most awe inspiiing woislip expeiience was oui
many visits to tle wall. 1le iist visit to tle wall was on Iiev
8labbat, wleie tle mood on tle women`s side ian tle gamut
o emotions. 1leie was tle young gioup o women wlo piayed
eivently at tle wall, in most piobably tle same spot eveiy week,
wlile otleis danced joyully, and soldieis celebiating coming
lome oi 8labbat. I was in tle middle o oui small gioup o
women, many o wlom weie seeing tle wall oi tle iist time.
1leie was a sense o community and stiengtl tlat we diew
iom one anotlei tlat was veiy poweiul. I eel so veiy lucky
to lave lad tlese deeply moving expeiiences, and look oiwaid
to taking some o kabbi Loingold`s woids and getting to some
