NON-METALLIC PROCESSES

BMFS 3333

SEMESTER 2

SESSION 2013/2014

Students should select their topics based on their exposure on knowledge, constructive thinking and logical and
sensible justification, parallel with the theories learned from the class

A. Focus : The focus of this group work is the understanding of non-metallic processes

B. Introduction:

Non-metallic processes such as polymer matrix composites, ceramics matrix composites and metal
matrix composites are an early success story of realizing the potential of composites technology for
improved performance. A brief look at new, common commercial uses reveals automotive panels for
sports utility vehicles, furniture, appliances and others. Advanced technologies implemented include
magnetic media, bone cement, filter membranes, and solar cells. They represent one area of composites
research that has led to marketable products.

C. Format of your case study report and presentation

The structure of your case study report must include following. Additional points relevant to your study in the
report are also accepted.

1. Introduction
a. Previous research study and the importance of this research.
b. Understanding the inside of composites. Selection of matrix (Polymer, ceramic, metal, etc.) and
identification of commercially used reinforced agents as reinforcements.
c. Properties of matrix composites - identifying the property advantages of these interesting
materials

2.. Methodological of matrix processing measurements (i.e. machine, equipments, apparatus, procedure,
etc)

3. Result - Characterizations of matrix composite materials (mechanical, electrical, rheological
properties, etc
30%
4. Explain how the significance of the finding in this research, analyze the latest technology developed
by the industry particularly to manufacture particular end product,
20%
5. Conclusions and references 15%
Total 100%

D. Guideline for students:
- Minimum 10 pages of report.
- Cite your references
- Work in group consists of maximum 5 members.
- Always refer to your lecturer for any opinion, recommendation or technical support.
- Presentation on your work will be carried out before the final report submission.

Submission Details: Group presentation will begin from week 12 (12 May, 2014 Monday)
and the report submission on 30 May Friday by 5:00 pm. The report and presentation bear
10%from overall evaluation.
