Todays grammar point is the construction mitai ni/na, whose meaning is similar to you ni/na, when used
to express the meaning like, as in resembling. The mitai ni/na construction is used primarily in spoken
J apanese.
To use the you ni/na construction with a noun, simply place the particle no after the noun, followed by you
ni/na.
{..]/',
`../',
Yamashita-san no you ni tsuyoku naritai.
I want to become strong like Mr. Yamashita.
{././',
`././',
Yamashita-san no you na hito ni naritai.
I want to become a person like Mr. Yamashita.
These two examples both use the you ni/na construction, but with one important difference. The particle
followingyou is different in each sentence. When an adverb, verb, or i-adjective follows you, ni is used,
and when a noun or na-adjective directly follows follows you, na is used.
Part of speech Example Plain present/past Add you ni/na
verb taberu taberu/tabeta you ni/na
i-adj oishii oishii/oishikatta you ni/na
na-adj hima hima na/hima datta you ni/na
noun Nihon Nihon no/Nihon datta you ni/na

Mitai has the same meaning as you ni/na, but is used mostly in spoken J apanese, and can be attached di-
rectly to a noun.
Part of speech Example Plain present/past Add mitai ni/na
verb taberu taberu/tabeta mitai ni/na
i-adj oishii oishii/oishikatta mitai ni/na
na-adj hima hima/hima datta mitai ni/na
noun Nihon Nihon/Nihon datta mitai ni/na
Here are a few examples contrasting the usage of each construction:

`/'/.',
Osuro no you na chiisa na machi ni sumitai desu.
`'//l.j',
`'/'/.',
Osuro mitai na chiisa na machi ni sumitai desu.
I want to live in a small city like Oslo.

Ferri no you na hayai kuruma ga hoshii aesu.
``'/'.(`',
``'/:'.:`',
Ferri mitai na hayai kuruma ga hoshii aesu.
I want a fast car like a Ferrari.
'.,j:|/',

Wakai koro no you ni kiokuryoku wa yokunai desu.
''.,j:|/',
1.''.1:/',
Wakai koro mitai ni kiokuryoku wa yokunai desu.

In this example, both ni and na are acceptable, depending on the meaning that one would like to express.
Usingna would emphasize the noun kuruma (car like a Ferrari), whileni would emphasize the adjective
hayai (fast like a Ferrari).
