FACIL ITATORS
This Fundamentals of Inquiry Workshop is adopted
from the Institute for Inquiry at the Exploratorium, San
Francisco. Using hands-on experiences and focused
reection, we give teachers a thorough grounding
in pedagogy and practice of science inquiry. This
workshop is organised into three sections that
illuminate the fundamentals of inquiry-based teaching
and learning.
Participants examine different ways of teaching
hands-on science, explore the process skills of inquiry,
engage in a full scientic inquiry, and consider ways
to include inquiry in their own classrooms. In this 3-day
workshop, they will explore ways to support classroom
teachers in moving from traditional teaching ways to
a more inquiry-based approach where students take
more responsibility for their learning.
Our workshop illuminate the power of learning scientic
content through inquiry and introduce strategies for
providing inquiry experiences in the classroom. During
this workshop, participants will:
carry out a series of activities that illuminate the
principles of inquiry-based learning;
practice science inquiry as it relates to the science
practices illuminated in the curriculum;
learn how to apply these activities in your
professional development program; and
examine the techniques of effective professional
development design, such as how to sequence
activities, match activities to learning goals, and
facilitate discussions to advance teachers thinking
and practices.

This workshop is organized into three sections
that illuminate the fundamentals of inquiry-
based teaching and learning
Elements of Inquiry
The experiences in this section focus on hands-
on approaches and scientic practices related to
inquiry learning.
Discover that different approaches to hands-
on teaching support different goals for
learning.
Identify the toolsthe scientic practices
needed to carry out inquiry, which include
asking questions, planning and carrying out
investigations, analyzing and interpreting
data, and arguing from evidence.
Put these scientic practices into action and
examine their roles in learning.
Examine the kinds of questions learners ask
about phenomena and nd out how to turn
non-investigable questions into investigable
ones.
Immersion in Inquiry
Plan and conduct an investigation that illustrates
how science content and science practices can be
learned through a carefully orchestrated inquiry
process. At the same time, the activity illuminates
the process of inquiry itself.
Explore questions that are fundamental to
designing an inquiry experience, including:
What are good starting points for
investigations?
What roles do materials play?
How is inquiry learning best facilitated?
How can conceptual understanding be
developed through inquiry?
Connections to the Classroom
Make connections between workshop experiences
and how current classroom activities can be
modied to incorporate more science inquiry and
science practices.

has a Bachelor Degree in Nuclear Science (Hons.). He graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in
1993 and has been working at Petrosains since April 2003. He is Head, Educators Centre, and is in charge
in Educators programs with the objective of providing value to the people and nation. He attended a full
Inquiry course at the Institute of Inquiry, Exploratorium, San Francisco and also the National Science Teachers
Association (NSTA) Conference in Texas, USA. He has conducted Inquiry workshops for Teachers Professional
Development Programmes since 2010 and he has trained pre-service and in-service teachers, educators
and university lecturers for their professional development skills enhancement in teaching STEM.
Mohd Imran Arif Mohd Arif
is a graduate from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He
nished his study in 2005 and joined Petrosains
as a science facilitator since then. His passion is
connecting ideas for making public comfortable
in doing science. A great chance came as he was
nominated to visit United States in 2008. He took a
short course there on inquiry and eventually began
to make some adaptation of the ideas with local
knowledge. He met many educators and shared
with them the theory and practice of inquiry-based
teaching and learning throughout these years.
