Volunteer Recognition

2014 Volunteer of the Year Award
Catholic Charities USA is pleased to announce that Alexis Weber, Director of the School of Nursing at the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Mercy Hospital and volunteer at Catholic Charities Pittsburgh, is
the winner of the 2014 Volunteer of the Year award.
Weber has volunteered her talents as a nurse with St. J oseph House, a sixty-bed single room occupancy
(SRO) facility for men ages fifty and over who have become homeless or were at risk for homelessness,
since 1994. She has provided nursing care to more than 1,600 men during her twenty years of
volunteer service. She provides health assessments, blood pressure screenings, and foot care for
patients with diabetes. Ms. Weber also deals with cardiac issues, breathing issues, and the specific
illnesses men may develop. She is well versed in issues associated with addiction and mental illness,
which is often an important aspect of her care.
Alexis Webers big-hearted generosity is an inspiration and reminder to us all to give back to our
brothers and sisters in need, said Rev. Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities USA. I want to
thank Alexis and all of our amazing nominees for giving selflessly of their time and talents and realizing
the importance of lending a helping hand. Our local agencies would be hard-pressed to serve so many
without the tireless support that volunteers like Alexis and hundreds of thousands of others provide
every day.
The Volunteer of the Year award honors the contributions of more than 300,000 volunteers who
dedicate their time and talents to the Catholic Charities network. Honored during National Volunteer
Month, Ms. Weber was chosen out of eight finalists to receive the award, which has been given out
annually since 1998. The other seven finalists for CCUSAs 2014 Volunteer of the Year award were:

Patty Bivins, Virginia Brannigan & Kay Noble (Catholic Charities of Camden)
Elizabeth Klinepeter (Catholic Charities J acksonville)
Glenn Leach (Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Davenport)
Tom McCoy (Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rockville Centre)
Dominic Rizzo (Catholic Charities Community Services of Summit County)
R. Peter Ulland (Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis)
Kim Winegar (Catholic Charities Hawaii)
Charities USA 2014 2015 Volunteer Profiles
Catholic Charities USA supports national recognition of volunteers in the Catholic Charities network.
Each issue of Charities USA - the Catholic Charities network magazine will spotlight a volunteer that
serves in a capacity related to the theme of the issue. The theme over the next three issues is
"protecting human life and dignity." The theme will be broken down roughly along the following lines:
Summer 2014- "Shadows" of life (services to undocumented, abused and neglected
children, domestic violence and sex trafficking victims, sex offenders and johns, people
with addictions, children with behavioral health issues, etc.)
Article and photos deadline: J une 3
Fall 2014 -"Twilight" of life (caregiver support, adult day programs, guardianship, hospice,
senior housing, elder abuse prevention, etc.)
Article and photos deadline: August 5
Winter 2015 - To be determined (more information will follow in a future newsletter)
Article and photos deadline: November 18
Profiles of volunteers should be about 400 words long. They should describe the kind of service the
volunteer provides, but also share about the volunteer and what makes volunteering rewarding for him
or her. High-quality photos are requested with each profile.
To submit a volunteer profile for consideration, please send an email to vmn@catholiccharitiesusa.org.
In the subject please include the target issue (i.e. Charities USA - Fall 2014).
Include the name, title, email address and phone number of the nominator and the volunteer, as well as
the name of the agency. Please ensure that the volunteer approves being recognized. The executive
director of each agency should be aware that the nomination is being submitted.

Resource Sharing

Resource Library - The resources from the old Catholic Charities USA website have been moved over
to a third party website - Scribd. Browse forms, policies and training materials. Steering Committee
members are in the process of browsing the website and identifying deficits in the library. There will be
a call for resources announced over the next few months.

Networking
J oin the LinkedIn group - As you have all heard, the Volunteer Managers Network is transitioning
away from the email discussion list and towards the LinkedIn platform. The LinkedIn Group is a tool to
help people network online via shared discussions, profile information, job announcements, etc. The

Professional Development
Certification in Volunteer Administration: The "Certified in Volunteer Administration" (CVA)
credential is offered for practitioners in volunteer resources management by the Council for Certification
in Volunteer Administration. As a performance-based certification, CVA is designed to measure an
individual's "knowledge-in-use"--the application of knowledge and skills by those with real-life
experience in this role. This includes the assessment of a candidate's ability to structure tasks, produce
ideas, and solve problems. To learn more about CVA, visit www.CVAcert.org. Please contact Katie
Campbell questions.
HandsOn Connect: The HandsOn Connect team at Points of Light, the largest organization dedicated
to volunteer service, wants to help expand your capacity to manage, track and report on people,
programs, trainings and volunteer opportunities. Several Catholic Charities across the United States are
already utilizing the HandsOn Connect volunteer management software. Some of the key features
include:
Robust search and sign-up functionalityallows volunteers to find opportunities that fit their
skills, interests, and schedule.
Simple volunteer opportunity publishing and managingverify hours, communicate with
volunteers, create teams, and set prerequisites.
Powerful reporting and tracking capabilityhundreds of pre-loaded reports to help measure
and share your impact.
Robust disaster management tools and skills-based search capabilityallows you to
quickly post volunteer opportunities in times of disaster and recruit the right volunteers to support
key projects.
Please visit the HandsOn Connect Website and view the HandsOn Connect Brochure to get additional
details. A good next step would be to schedule a conference call, then follow up with a demo of the
HandsOn Connect application. Please feel to email or call Chris OConnor at
coconnor@pointsoflight.org or 404.979.2720 if you have any questions.

Grant Opportunities
Cooking Matters at the Store: Catholic Charities USA is offering mini grants to support a healthy
eating curriculum. Share Our Strength has developed a grocery store tour that emphasizes healthy
shopping on a budget. The mini grants fund incentives (in the form of grocery store gift cards) to
encourage consumers to participate in the tours. The training to run the tours is all on line with
additional supports provided by Share Our Strength. This initiative would lend itself to a volunteer,
preferably someone with a nutrition background or a passion for healthy eating (but not required). If
you would like to bring Cooking Matters at the Store tours to your community and help families build
cooking and food shopping skills you may want to consider this program.

To learn more about this program, please contact J ane Stenson.
