Smart Devices for Renewable Energy
Systems
The Theme: Power system operators are now forced to deal with an increasing number of problems, largely related to increased
number of loads, new environmental policies and economic pressures of the market. Large scale adoption of distributed generation (DG),
also of renewable type, potentially able to ease the transmission system and partly to resolve these problems, is slowed by the technical
condition of the distribution system, that currently is not able to accommodate a high penetration of DG.
n order to assure the renewable sources integration the development of new technologies for energy conversion from these sources are
necessary.
n this regard, energy saving may be viewed as another form of renewable energy. !hus, new energy saving methods (typically on the
load side) and methods to increase renewable generators productivity have the potential to eventually reduce the cost of renewable energy
and further promote the proliferation of renewable generators.
Power electronic energy conversion systems ("#$) are the core enabling technologies for the growth of large%scale renewable distributed
energy systems. &ecause of the new functions imposed by renewable sources and utility, "#$ and other electronic e'uipments for
renewable energy systems re'uire a deep redesign.
nnovative, smart devices are re'uired to get enhancements in both the controllability and the overall performance of renewable energy
production and distribution.
$mart devices, endowed with advanced topologies and control features, advanced diagnostics and prognostics and smart reconfiguration
capability are re'uired to enhance the performance of future renewable energy systems, optimi(ing both generator and load side, raising
availability and reliability, thus reducing repair and maintenance needs.
!hese devices should be able to e)tract the ma)imum power, guarantee the best efficiency of the generating system or increasing its
lifetime, without penali(ing the 'uality of the output power. !hey should also allow active filtering, phase balancing, harmonic
cancellation, and dynamic reactive power control, critical to grid voltage stability.
$mart devices will enable renewable energy resources to ride through grid disturbances rather than trip off, to switch from grid%connected
to stand%alone operation and viceversa in real%time under utility control and run in microgrid mode by means of real%time load control,
balancing generation and energy storage systems.
!opics of interest of this $pecial $ection include, but are not limited to*
- Power converter topologies for intelligent renewable sources management
- #ontrol methods for smart devices and intelligent power converters in distributed generation
- "nergy management devices to support renewable distributed generation integration in active networks
- +daptive control systems to ma)imi(e the e)tractable power from variable speed wind turbines and photovoltaic systems
- #ontrol systems to improve fault ride%through capability of wind energy conversion system
- #ontrol methods for Distribution ,le)ible +# !ransmission $ystem
- Protection systems for distributed generation with renewable energy systems
- $mart devices for demand side management and energy saving.
