Volume 38 Number 22 May 25, 2014 803-256-1654 / www.eastminsterpres.org SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE BEGINS THIS SUNDAY 9:00 a.m. Sunday School (Come tailgate along Trenholm this Sunday) 10:00 am. Jubilee Worship in Tompson Hall 10:15 a.m. Traditional Worship in the Gym The father/grandfather came from Camden to celebrate with one fam- ily. A sister and niece of another person had come from Chapel Hill. A mother and grandmother of a young man had come from the Charleston area. What was it that prompted these people to travel such distances? They were present with, and for family members who were taking a big step and making a big commitment. They were here to support, and to celebrate, with family members who were uniting with the Body of Christ in this place. To stand before others and proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord is radical. To promise to fol- low Christ, to be His disciple, and to join in the worship and work of the church is bold. As I listened to these men and women express their desire to serve meals at Transitions Homeless Shelter, to work with young people, to be part of the Prayer Team, to serve as a Bradley Lunch Buddy, and to help with the lawn care team, I was filled with hope imagining how our Lord will work in the lives of all those who give themselves to His Lordship and leading. This is true, of course, not only for new saints among us, but for each and every one of us, as well. By Gods grace, we will find ourselves when we get beyond ourselves by giv- ing ourselves away. Looking at Eastminsters Summer menu, a banquet is being prepared for each of you. It includes the opportunity to dine on C.S. Lewis Screwtape Letters during summer Sunday school and a study of Galatians in worship, the chance for Middle and High School youth to feast on multiple week-long experiences, a gourmet parent-youth mis- sion trip, and a dozen other study and service opportunities. In Jesus Christ, the living God is present in the midst of each of these opportunities. The Holy Spirit nudges us to partake and to lead our children in partaking. It is a beautiful sight to see the joy as people open themselves to our amazing God. Both when we unite with the church and along lifes way. So the question as you make all your summer plans: Will we be intentional about our relationship with Jesus? Will you? Gratefully, Brad STAFF Dr. Bradley D. Smith Pastor Dr. Mark E. Expressions of Thanks Through Service This past Sunday on May 18, many of EPC members expressed their thanks to God by pledging to serve with their time and talents. A Summer with Screwtape! Summers coming! And what better adventure for the summer months in our fa- mously hot city than to drop in on a young demons training exercises? C.S. Lew- is introduced us to the senior demon Screwtape, back while England was in the middle of World War II. Screwtapes letters of advice to his nephew Wormwood, a tempter-in-training, caught the imagination of England. They first appeared week by week in an Anglican Church magazine in 1941, and were published in book form as Te Screwtape Letters in 1942. They roared to popularity in England and have been continuously popular ever since, spreading quickly to America and making C.S. Lewis famous the world over. BEGINNING SUNDAY, JUNE 1, we will journey together in the Combined Adult Class through the conversations of Screwtape and Wormwood. We will be presenting them in dramatic form, the ministers and willing volunteers displaying their meager acting talents and worse British accents! We will stop along the way for conversation and discussion. It should be a lot of fun! The book, while certainly recommended is not necessary, though you may in fact already have your own copy. Julie McDaniel has copies of Te Screwtape Letters available in her office ($8.00). We will meet for the summer in the CLC, second floor, rooms 271-273. Join us, Sundays at 9 a.m.! Tailgate Adult Sunday School Experience Sunday, May 25, at 9:00 a.m. Friends, were going to try a new thing this summer. On three different Sundays this summer (May 25, July 6, and August 3), we are going to have a relaxed Sun- day school tailgate time on the front lawn. The idea is for you to bring your own lawn chair and team up at one of our tailgate tents. We will have coffee, juice, and whatever our tailgate friends decide to bring. We are asking some of our officers to come and share their faith stories with a group of 8-10 folks at each tent. Our hope is for us to get to know one another better and to share how God is at work in our lives. Theres no curriculum, just fellowship and intentional time of being together. If you have a tailgate tent that youd be willing to bring and setup, please let Julie McDaniel or Jeff Smith know by Friday, May 16. Please dress casual and invite your friends!
