PROFILE (3 PTS)

I am a Junior at Niles North High School, and I hope

that through Sirs, I can use my initial findings to jump
into the field of Cellular and Molecular Biology in
college. In college, I hope to carry out independent
research to further my initial findings, and to make a
contriution to the scientific community.
EXPERIENCE (2 PTS)
SIRS STUDENT, NILES NORTH; SKOKIE, IL 2013-2014
!he SI"S #S!$M In%uiry and "esearch& course 'as designed to allo' students to research different topics they
are interested in, and conduct e(periments to e(pand upon their initial findings.
My research this year 'as focused on Cellular and Molecular Biology. Canine B )ymphoma cells 'ere
continuously split during the duration of this e(periment. !he cells 'ere e(posed to *+ and ,.-+
concentrations of hydrogen pero(ide. !he cells 'ere e(posed to the solution for three different time inter.als/
01, 12, and 30 hours. "esults 'ere recorded under a hemocytometer 'ith the use of trypan lue to stain and
recogni4e the dead lymphoma cells.

LAB SKILLS (10 PTS)
SKILL
:ility to analy4e cell count using a hemocytometer and trypan lue. !he hemocytometer is a thick glass slide etched 'ith
a grid of perpendicular lines. ;sing the grid lines, it is possile to count the numer of cells ali.e and dead. !o do this, first
pipette ,.-m) of trypan lue into the 'ell plates. !hen, e(tract the solution into a hemocytometer slide. Ne(t, under a
microscope, record the numer of cells ali.e and dead. - s%uares containing the cells/ top left, top right, ottom left,
ottom right, and the center s%uared grids 'ere recorded.
SKILL
:ility to split and culture cells. <irst, the media needs to e prepared y placing it in a 'ater ath at 83 degrees Celsius.
:fter the media is at the appropriate temperature, 2m) of media is pipetted into 0 ne' culture flasks under the io hood.
0m) of Canine B )ymphoma cells #or media from the old culture& are then added to the culture flasks. !he culture flasks
are then placed into an incuator at 83 degrees Celsius.
SKILL
:ility to dilute chemicals into different concentrations. Hydrogen pero(ide 'as diluted using the formula concentration of
* times the .olume of * e%uals the concentration of 0 times the .olume of 0. !o create a concentration of * + hydrogen
pero(ide from 8, + hydrogen pero(ide, ,.888m) of the 8, + concentration 'as pipetted into a graduated cylinder.
=istilled 'ater is then added to the graduated cylinder until *,m) of total solution is reached.
SKILL
:ility to handle harmful chemicals appropriately. >hene.er handling to(ic, inflammale, or carcinogenic chemicals, do so
'ith glo.es, goggles, and under the fume hood. Many chemicals used during e(periments can urn through skin, so

SKILL
:ility to autocla.e. !he autocla.e is used to kill acteria and cells. <irst, check to see that the supply of filtered 'ater is
full. Ne(t, turn on the autocla.e until the portion elo' the rack is filled sufficiently 'ith 'ater. !hen, load the materials that
need to e disposed of. !hey should e sealed tightly. Close the door, and lock it using the mechanism. Choose the
different heat, pressure, and time settings and press start.
