Ayurveda considers health of the person as the balance of three doshas In the body and
disease as the imbalance of these three doshas. The imbalance of the doshas can be
understood by various symptoms and signs in the body, which can be revealed by
examination of the patient as well as various investigative test reports. There are three
steps in patient examination to lead to a diagnosis according to ayurvedic terms.
These are:
Modern investigative methods like X-rays, scans, microscopic examinations etc. can
be added in Darsana as they are also visible evidences of the disease condition even
though with the help of other devices. Based on the above said principles there are
two criteria in a patient examination. Ashta sthana pareeksha and Dasavidha
pareeksha.

Concepts & Principles
According to ayurveda there are three factors in our body
which control all of our mental and physical
functions. These will be different in different persons
depending on which their body functions like,
digestion, sleep etc. may also vary. These are
VATHA
PITHA and
KAPHA and they are called doshas.
There will be a basic combination of these three in every
person which is decided by the genetic make up of
that person and it cannot be changed during the life
time. But there can be deviations from this
combination because of reasons like any disease,
any major changes in the food habits, life style etc.
These will be manifested on the body and mind of a
person in the form of various symptoms. So in
ayurveda we call the disease as an imbalance of
these three factors and health as the balance of the
same. So any effort to cure a disease is to make the
doshas in balance.

AIM OF AYURVEDA
The aim of ayurvedic treatments can be divided in to three.

1. For the healthy people to maintain their health and to prevent the diseases
2. For the sick people to cure the diseases and to regain normal health
3. For rejuvenation or rasayana

For the healthy people there are many advices in ayurveda to maintain their mental and physical
health. It starts from waking up in the morning, brushing the teeth, taking bath etc. and extend up to
how to behave and other moral advices too. It includes rejuvenation massages, intake of general
tonics etc.
For the sick people we have different types of treatments including internal medicines and external
treatments. Mainly there are two types of treatments called sodhana and samana. Sodhana means
cleansing the body of increased and imbalanced doshas. This is suitable only in chronic diseases
and stronger patients. On the other hand samana is meant for diseases of less severity, and in weak
patients. In these, sodhana include the panchakarma.
Rasayana or rejuvenation is a specific branch of ayurveda which deals with nourishment and
revitalization of the body tissues and to minimize the difficulties of old age.

During the course of ayurvedic treatment food is a very important factor
which should be in accordance with the disease and the internal
medicines. As in the case of internal medicines, every food material in the
world has a specific taste and other properties according to which we can
explain their ability to regulate the imbalance of the doshas. For example,
milk is considered as sweet in taste, cold and heavy to digest, so it will
aggravate kapha and at the same time reduces vata and pitha. Like this we
can make use of the food materials towards the balancing of every
doshas. Apart from the body type, food for a patient during the period of
treatment will be mainly based on body condition or the diseases. In that,
some diseases need highly specific foods otherwise which may aggravate
the disease or counteract the medicines. Sometimes during some
treatments there will be big restrictions in the food as in Snehapanam or
Virechanam.

As a general consideration, vegetarian diet with low spices and oil will be
preferred during ayurvedic treatments. And there are some specific
combinations of food materials which are harmful for the body, which
should be also careful. The method of cooking and the type of oil used for
cooking are also important. So during the consultation, the doctor will
enquire the patient about the usual food style of the person, likes and
dislikes, quantity of food usually consuming etc. Considering all these
factors he can make a diet plan suitable for the persons condition. And
at the end of the treatments you can talk to the doctor about the possible
changes in your normal diet which should be beneficial for his disease
condition.

DRINKING WATER
Drinking water also plays an important
role during the treatments. Always
boiled and cooled water is preferred for
general use and in some cases we
prescribe some medicated water for
drinking, cool/warm depending on the
condition of the patient. Usually we use
a herbal combination of three herbs to
boil the water which is cooling and
digestive. We provide this water in
every room for drinking purpose, which
is red in color. Proper intake of water is
also very important for better digestion
and absorption of the medicines and
food, and it will help for the natural
cleansing of the body.

EXERCISES
Exercises during ayurvedic treatments should be selected carefully
depending on the disease condition and the condition of the patient.
Generally all types of mental and physical strains should be avoided
during the course of treatment; otherwise which cause harm to the
body or the treatment wont be so effective. Very mild exercises
like walking through a shady path, mild yoga, breathing exercises,
meditation etc. will be suitable for most of the conditions. Anyhow,
during some treatments all types of exercises, and even coming out
of the room will be restricted like in Snehapanam and Virechanam.
In conditions like diseases of the muscles, joints, nerves, movement
disorders etc. physiotherapy and passive exercises will be combined
with the treatments depending on the condition of the patient. In
conditions like body weight reduction and excessive fat in the body,
moderate active exercises and brisk walking will be advised
depending on the type of treatment and the condition of the patient.

Yoga means union-it is a tool to unite individual spirit to universal spirit.
Yoga is an art and science by which one can develop ones inherent
powers in a balanced manner. It works on all aspects: physical, mental,
vital, emotional, psychic and spiritual. Yoga aims at bringing different
bodily functions in to perfect co-ordination, so that they work for the
good of the whole body. Yoga practices have potential for improvement
of physical health by encouraging better circulation of oxygenated blood
in the body, restraining sense organs and there by inducing tranquility
and serenity of the mind. The practice of yoga prevents psychosomatic
disorders and improves an individuals resistance and ability to endure
stressful situations. Yoga and ayurveda have the same belief that the
prana or the vital force and its flow. Also yoga helps in bringing back the
balance of the three doshas vata, pitha and kapha. As the principles and
aims of yoga and ayurveda are very much similar, it is very compatible
to each other in producing an excellent result or cure for many diseases.

The treatment of various diseases by inserting very fine needles in to
the specific points of the body is termed acupuncture. In Latin acus

precisely but also to use appropriate manipulations of the needles in
accordance with the nature of the diseases and the chosen point. The

BATH
Attached to every treatment room, there is a bath room in which you can
take a bath after the treatments, for that our treatment staff will help
you. For body bath usually hot water is used and luke warm water for the
head. To clean the oil on the body a special herbal mixture is used which
is a combination of some herbal powders mixed in egg white and some
water. It will clean the skin off the oil and the dead skin by mild scrub
action. For the head you can use herbal shampoo or the same powder
used for the body. After every head bath or a treatment on the head a
herbal powder will be rubbed on the middle of the head and also give for
smelling. This is to prevent cold due to the water and the climatic
changes.

1. A treatment table(droni) made of special medicinal wood on which the
patient has to lie down or sit for most of the treatments. The head end
of the treatment table is specially designed for doing sirodhara.

2. Dhara equipments which are arranged on the head end top of the
treatment table. There are facilities to hear relaxing music during
the treatment sessions. If you are interested you can get it on request
during the session.
During the massages you will get a use and throw under garment
which can be tied around the waist. You should remove all the other
cloths and ornaments before coming for the treatment session.

UDWARTHANAM
Udwarthanam or Powder massage: This
massage is done with dry warm herbal
powder from the limbs towards the heart.
This is meant for better lymphatic drainage
and thereby reduces the water collection in
the body. At first suitable oils for the body
and the head are applied and a gentle
massage done on the body. Then the warm,
dry coarse powder massaged upward which
imparts friction on the skin and helps to
dissolve the fatty layer below the skin. This
is usually done by 3 persons and for 45
minutes. After the massage the patient is
allowed to take rest for a few minutes and
later a hot water bath is given. The powder

KSHEERA DHOOMAM
This is a method of sweating for a specific part of the body using
medicated milk steam. This is the best method of sweating for the head
and face. For this a herbal decoction is made which is mixed with milk
and this is boiled in closed vessel. From this vessel the steam can come
out through a tube Usually a decoction of bala roots (Sida rettusa) is
used mixed with pure cows milk for most of the vata diseases. Before
the application of steam suitable oil will be applied on the face and
neck. Care should be taken to protect the eyes from the hot steam.

The word pichu means soaking a piece of cloth or cotton in specific liquids
like oils, herbal juices, decoctions etc. In this treatment the cloth or
cotton piece soaked in the liquid will be kept on the affected parts. The
temperature of the liquid can be cold or warm according to the disease
condition. If it is warm its temperature should be kept uniform by
warming it in between. According to the body part the name of the pichu
can be different, for eg. Pichu on the lower back is called kateepichu and
pichu on the head is called siro pichu.

THARPANAM

This is an eye treatment to nourish and correct the diseases of the eyes.
The procedure includes collecting well melted and strained medicated
ghee over the eyes. For this purpose a boundary is made around the
eyes using black gram paste. This is a very powerful treatment to
rejuvenate the eyes and also for the cure of the diseases of the eyes.

The ghee in general has a specific property to carry the qualities of the
herbs used for medicating the ghee to the corresponding organs easily.
Because of the pitha dominance of the eyes ghee will be the best

ophthalmic area of the brain and the optic nerve.

PUTAPAKAM

This is an after treatment of nethra tharpanam. This should be done after
the course of tharpanam to clean the eyes off the ghee and to relieve
tiredness caused by excessive absorption of ghee. This will clear the
vision and relieve the heaviness and haziness of the eyes after the
tharpanam. For this treatment herbal juices are used to collect inside the
black gram mould as in tharpanam. It can be mixed with goats milk
according to the condition.

The herbal juice clears the sticky ghee particles from the eyes and the
channels of the tear glands will be freed from the clogging due to the
washing. This will help for clearing the vision and make the eyes feel
light and fresh.

Vamanam means medically induced vomiting which clean the upper
respiratory tract and upper digestive tract. This is mainly done in
conditions in which kapha or doshas in relation with kapha is in
imbalance. Proper preparations will be done before the procedure in
which snehana and swedana are the main ones. Compared with the
normal vomiting this process will clean the excessive doshas and the
toxins collected in the systems. After the preparations the patient have
to take the medicine in the morning- the kapha kala (the time of
aggravated kapha) between 6-10am in a medium of milk with honey
and rock salt.. For this procedure the patient will be seated in
comfortable chair to support his back. After the process of vomiting
the person will be given some medicated fume inhalations etc. The
activities and the food of the person will highly restricted on the day.

VAMANAM
The supporting medicines to the actual vomiting drug start its action
before digesting it only. This irritates the mucosa in the stomach to
secrete the digestive juices in large quantities and there by stimulating
the vomiting centre in the brain. This will result in the anti peristaltic
movements and expel the excess digestive juices with pressure. With
the loss of the medicine through the vomitus the strength of the
medicine will be deteriorating and there by stop the movements naturally.

VIRECHANAM
Virechanam means medically induced purgation. This is a cleansing
method to clean the lower digestive tract. This is a method of cleansing
for elimination of excessive pitha dosha. Virechanam is usually done
after proper preparations as in every panchakarma. The medicine used
will be decided after a thorough evaluation of the koshtum of the patient
or the nature of the digestive tract. The medicine will be given to
the patient in the morning in empty stomach. Then he has to drink warm
Water to stimulate the digestive tract. The activities of the patient and
His food will be highly restricted on the day.

VIRECHANAM
The medicine will start its action only after digestion. During the process
of digestion it absorbs lot of water from the intestines and there by
diluting the contents of the stomach. This will stimulate the defecating
centre in the brain and activates various secretions in the body like bile,
pancreatic juice, other digestive juices etc. These increased amounts of
hormones and secretions get collected in the stomach and by the
peristaltic movements it gives a push propelling the stomach contents
out. The excessive production of secretions in these glands makes them
clean by removing the long collected ones. By that way the purgation
clears liver, spleen and pancreas along with the digestive tract.

NASYAM
next
Literally means introducing medicaments through the nose. This is the
best method of cleansing for the head and it cleanses all the organs above
the neck. As the head is the main seat of kapha, it is the prime treatment
for kapha. For this also suitable preparations are done depending on the
condition and the strength of the patient. Nasyam will done while the
patient lying on his back on a comfortable table with stretched neck.
Then his face and neck are thoroughly oleated and sweat by water vapor
before putting the drops in.

NASYAM
The medicine applied to the nostrils irritates the mucosa of the nose and
the Para- nasal sinuses. This stimulates the secretion of the collected
doshas and mucus. The effect of the medicines absorbed through the
circulation helps to heal and nourish the structures above the neck. In
ayurveda the head of the body is considered as the root of a tree. So any
medication giving to the head will be effective for the body also.

SNEHAVASTHY
Snehavasthy is enema done with oil alone or a combination of oil and other
medicines. This is mainly for nourishing the lower digestive tract and to lead
the vata in its normal path. This can be done alone or in combination with
kashayavasthy. Snehavasthy is usually done after food, this is to prevent the
upward movement of the oil in to the stomach. For that the patient should be
prepared by snehana, swedana, vamana, virechana etc. according to the
condition. Then after a major meal the person is laid on a comfortable table in
his left lateral position and his abdomen and the hip region are oleated and
sweat well with steam. Then the suitable amount of oil is warmed and filled
in a syringe and introduced gently through the anus and pushed in with a
constant pressure. After that he can lay on his back and some movements of
the legs are done to keep the oil in the intestines for the maximum time.
Usually the oil will come out after 1-2 hours. If the oil is not coming out also
there is nothing to worry.

Kashaya vasthy is enema done with a combination of herbal decoction
and other medicines. This is mostly to cleanse the intestines and to make
the vata in balance. This is always done in combination with the
snehavasthy and always before food. To prepare the solution for the
kashayavasthy there are strict guide lines which should be followed
properly for the better action of the treatment. The medicines prescribed
should be mixed together in the given sequence and warmed slightly
before introducing it. As in snehavasthy the patients stomach and back
should be properly oleated and sweat by using water vapor. Then in his
left lateral position the medicine is introduced through the anus in
constant pressure. As this is not meant for retaining inside, the patient
can go to the toilet when he feels so. After the bowel movement
and a hot water bath he can take his food which altogether will relieve
the discomforts he may feel after the enema.

Rakthamokshum or blood letting is very effective in some diseases which
the blood impurities are the main reasons for the disease. Various methods
are used for this purpose for e.g. using leech, by venesection, through
shallow wounds etc. The appropriate method can be selected according to
the disease either localized or generalized, dominance of vata, pitha and
kapha etc. This panchakarma is selected for cure in cases in which all the
other treatments found ineffective.
Mode of action
According to ayurvedic principles toxins and vitiated doshas which cause
diseases can be made expel by means of internal and external oleation
and sweating. Removal of these toxins through the nearest body opening
makes the body clean and relieves the diseases also. But in some
diseases these methods of cleaning will not be so effective and in those
cases we have to go for purification of blood also. By the different
methods of blood letting in ayurveda the quantity of blood removed
should be minimum without disturbing the normal functioning of the body
and at the same time cleaning the body also.

JALOOKAVACHARANAM
This is a method of blood letting using leeches (Hirudinaria granulosa).
For this purpose leeches living in fresh water are selected. There are some
specific characteristics for the leeches to be selected for the therapy,
otherwise it will cause adverse effects like itching, burning etc. This
method is usually selected for localized pitha diseases. For this the part of
the body where the leeching is intended should be cleaned thoroughly
before the application of leech. Then a shallow wound is made on the skin
to ooze a little blood or some milk can be applied on that part to attract
the leech towards that part. Once the leech gets attached with that part it
will start sucking blood. It will swell up to its capacity or we can detach it
from the part when the desired effect is attained. After detaching also the
part of the body should be cleaned thoroughly with some herbal
decoctions.

Indications
Blood letting through shallow wounds made of a sterile surgical blade is
called prachanam. This is usually done for localized diseases or blood
impurities. For this the specific body part is cleaned with a decoction
of thriphala or turmeric and a bandage is made above the part. Then
with the sterile instrument shallow wounds will be made from down to
up to visualize the part through the oozing blood. After finishing the
process the body part will be cleaned again with the herbal decoction
and some medicated ghee can be applied after removing the bandage.

paste a tender banana leaf will be tied to cool the head and to prevent drying of
the paste. After a specific period of time the paste will be removed and the head

Sirodhara done by using medicated buttermilk is called thakradhara. The
medicated butter milk is made by mixing equal quantities of herbal decoction
and butter milk. The buttermilk itself is medicated with some herbs depending
on the condition. At first suitable oil for the head and the body are applied and
a gentle massage is done on the body. Then the dhara starts with lukewarm
buttermilk flowing on the forehead in a continuous stream. Along with that a
gentle massage is done on the body without disturbing the head position. The
commonly used butter milk is medicated with herbs like dried goose berry Pulp
and Cyperus rotundus tubers. This is done for 45 minutes by 3 persons and
after that the patient is allowed to take rest for a few minutes. Then hot Water

KASHAYA OR DECOCTION:- This is a water based preparation in which
the dried herbs are boiled in a specific quantity of water and reduced
to certain level. This is in concentrated liquid form and usually taken
