4n 5hinese astrology the animal signs assigned by year re6resent what others 6erceive you as being or how you 6resent
yourself. 4t is a common misconce6tion that the animals assigned by year are the only signs and many western descri6tions
of 5hinese astrology draw solely on this system. 4n fact& there are also animal signs assigned by month (called inner
animals& by day (called true animals and hours (called secret animals.
(hile a 6erson might a66ear to be a 7ragon because they were born in the year of the 7ragon& they might also be
a 8na9e internally& an :' truly& and a ;oat secretively.
7e6ending on the source& the ;oat is sometimes interchangeable with a 8hee6 or Ram.
(ithin the Four Pillars& the year is the 6illar re6resenting information about the 6erson<s family bac9ground and society or
relationshi6 with their grand6arents. The 6erson<s age can also be easily deduced from the sign of the 6erson& the current
sign of the year and the 6erson<s 6erceived age (teens&mid )3<s& +3<s and so on. For e'am6le& a 6erson who is a Tiger is
either ")& )+& *. or +0 years old in )3"3& the year of the Tiger. 4n )3""& the year of the Rabbit& that 6erson is one year older.
The following table shows the .3=year cycle matched u6 to the (estern calendar for the years "1)+$)3+* (see 8e'agenary
cycle article for years "03+$)3+*. The se'agenary cycle begins at lichun <about February +< according to some astrological

Months and solar terms!edit#
Main article: Solar term
(ithin the Four Pillars& the month is the 6illar re6resenting information about the 6erson<s 6arents or childhood. 2any
5hinese astrologers consider the month 6illar to be the most im6ortant one in determining the circumstances of one<s adult
life.
The ") animals are also lin9ed to traditional 5hinese agricultural calendar& which runs alongside the better 9nown lunar
calendar. 4nstead of months& this calendar is divided into )+ two wee9 segments 9nown as Solar Terms. Each animal is
lin9ed to two of these solar terms for a 6eriod similar to the (estern month. Anli9e the .3 year lunar calendar& which can
vary by as much as a month in relation to the (estern calendar& the agricultural calendar varies by only one day& beginning
on the (estern February * or + every year. >gain unli9e the cycle of the lunar years& which begins with the Rat& the
agricultural calendar begins with the Tiger as it is the first animal of s6ring.
>s each sign is lin9ed to a month of the solar year& it is thereby also lin9ed to a season. Each of the elements is also lin9ed
to a season (see above& and the element that shares a season with a sign is 9nown as that sign<s fixed element. 4n other
words& that element is believed to im6art some of its characteristics to the sign concerned. The fi'ed element of each sign
a66lies also to the year and hour signs& and not Bust the monthly sign. 4t is im6ortant to note that the fi'ed element is
se6arate from the cycle of elements which interact with the signs in the .3 year cycle.

The 5hinese zodiac is also used to label times of day& with each sign corres6onding to a Xlarge=hourX or shichen (:&
