Proverbs (General sayings)

Introduction
The Book of Proverbs is a collection of moral and religious teachings in the form of
sayings and proverbs. Much of it has to do with practical, everyday concerns. It begins
with the reminder that To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for the Lord,
Its many short sayings reveal the insights of ancient Israelite teachers about what a wise
person will do in certain situations. Some deal with matters of etiquette in social
relationships, and others with the need for self-control. Much is said about the qualities as
humility, patience, respect for the poor, and loyalty to friends.

The Value of Proverbs

David

Solomon

These are the proverbs of Solomon the son of David and king of Israel.
Here are proverbs that will help you to recognize wisdom and good advice and
understand sayings with deep meaning.
They can teach you how to live intelligently and how to be honest, just and fair.
They can make an experienced person clever and teach young men how to be
resourceful.
These proverbs can give guidance to the educated.

Advice to young men

To have knowledge you must first have reverence for the Lord
Pay attention to what your father and mother tell you, my son, their teaching will
improve your character as a hand-some turban or a necklace improves your
appearance.
When sinners tempt you my son, dont give in.
Suppose they say, Come on, lets find someone to kill! Lets attack some innocent
people for the fun of it!
They may be alive and well when we find them but they will be dead when we
are through with them!
Robbery always claims the life of the robber-this is what happens to anyone who
lives by violence.

Wisdom Calls

Listen! Wisdom is calling out in the streets and market-places, calling loudly at
the city gates and wherever people come together
Foolish people! How long do you want to be foolish? How long will you enjoy
pouring scorn on knowledge? Will you never learn?
Listen when I reprimand you; I will give you good advice and share my
knowledge with you.
I have been calling you, inviting you to come, but you would not listen
You paid no attention to me
You have ignored all my advice and have not been willing to let me correct you.
So when you get into trouble, I will laugh at you
I will mock you when terror strikes, when it comes on you like a storm, bringing
fierce winds of trouble, and you are in pain and misery
Then you will call for wisdom, but I will not answer.
You may look for me everywhere, but you will not find me.
You have never had any use for knowledge and have always refused to obey the
Lord.
So then, you will get what you deserve, and your own actions will make you sick.
Inexperienced people die because they reject wisdom.
Stupid people are destroyed by their own lack of concern

But whoever listens to me will have security.

He will be safe, with no reason to be afraid.

The Rewards of Wisdom

Listen to what is wise and try to understand it

Yes beg for knowledge; plead for insight, look for it as hard as you would for
silver or some hidden treasure
If you do you will know what it means to fear the Lord and you will succeed in
learning about God
It is the Lord who gives wisdom; from Him comes knowledge and understanding
He provides help and protection for righteous, honest men
He protects those who treat others fairly, and guards those who are devoted to him
If you listen to me you will know what is right, just and fair.
You will know what you should do
Your insight and understanding will protect you and prevent you from doing the
wrong thing
You will be able to resist any immoral woman who tries to seduce you with her
smooth talk, who is faithless to her own husband and forgets her sacred vows.
If you go to her house, you are traveling the road to death.
To go there is to approach the world of the dead, no one who visits her ever
comes back, he never returns to the road to life.
Righteous men-men of integrity-will live in this land of ours.

Thirty Wise sayings

I want you to put your trust in the Lord that is why I m going to tell them to you now.
They contain knowledge and good advice, and will teach you what the truth really is.
-1Dont take advantage of the poor just because you can; dont take advantage of
those who stand helpless in court. The Lord will argue their case for them and
threaten the life of anyone who threatens theirs.
-2Dont make friends with people who have hot, violent tempers. You might learn
their habits and not be able to change.

-3Dont promise to be responsible for someone elses debts. If you should be unable to
pay, they will take away even your bed.
-4Never move an old boundary-mark that your ancestors established.
-5Show me a man who does a good job, and I will show you a man who is better than
most and worthy of the company of kings.
-6When you sit down to eat with an important man, keep in mind who he is. If you
have a big appetite restrain yourself. Dont be greedy for the fine food he serves; he
may be trying to trick you.
-7Be wise enough not to wear yourself out trying to get rich. Your money can be gone
in a flash, as if it had grown wings and flown away like an eagle.
-8Dont eat at the table of a stingy man or be greedy for the fine food he serves.
Come on and have some more, he says, but he doesnt mean it. What he thinks is
what he really is. You will vomit up what you have eaten, and all your flattery will
be wasted.
-9Dont try to talk sense to a fool; he cant appreciate it.
-10Never move an old boundary mark or take over land owned by orphans. The Lord
is their powerful defender, and he will argue their case against you.
-11Pay attention to your teacher and learn all you can.
-12Dont hesitate to discipline a child.
A good spanking wont kill him. As a matter of fact, it may save his life.

Son if you become wise, I will be very happy. I will be proud when I hear you
speaking words of wisdom
-14Dont be envious of the sinful people; let reverence for the Lord be the concern of
your life. If it is, you have a bright future.
-15Listen my son be wise and give serious thought to the way you live. Dont associate
with people who drink too much wine or stuff themselves with food. Drunkards and
gluttons will be reduced to poverty. If all you do is eat and sleep, you will soon be
wearing rags.
-16Listen to your Father; without him you would not exist. When your mother is old,
show her your appreciation. Truth, wisdom, learning, and good sense-these are
worth paying for, but too valuable for you to sell. A righteous mans father has good
reason to be happy. You can take pride in a wise son. Make your father and mother
proud of you; give your mother that happiness.
-17Pay close attention son and let my life be your example. Prostitutes and immoral
women are a deadly trap. They wait for you like robbers and cause many men to be
unfaithful.
-18Dont let wine tempt you, even though it is rich red, though it sparkles in the cup,
and it goes down smoothly. The next morning you will feel as if you had been bitten
by a poisonous snake.
-19Dont be envious of evil people and dont try to make friends with them. Causing
trouble is all they ever thing about; every time they open their mouth someone is
going to be hurt.
-20Homes are built on the foundation of wisdom and understanding. Where there is
knowledge, the rooms are finished with valuables, beautiful things.

strength. The more good advice you get, the more likely you are to win.
-22Wise sayings are too deep for a stupid person to understand. He has nothing to say
when important matters and being discussed.
-23People hate a person who has nothing but scorn for others.
-24If you are weak in a crisis, you are week indeed.
-25Dont hesitate to rescue someone who is about to be executed unjustly. You may say
that it is none of your business, but God knows and judges your motives. He keeps
watch on you, he knows, and He will reward you according to what you do.
-26Son, eat honey it is good, and just as honey from the comb is sweet on your tongue,
you may be sure that wisdom is good for the soul. Get wisdom and you have a bright
future.
-27Dont be like the wicked who scheme to rob an honest man or to take away his
home. No matter how often an honest man falls, he always gets up again; but
disaster destroys the wicked.
-28Dont be glad when your enemy meets disaster, and dont rejoice when he stumbles.
The Lord will know if you are gloating, and he will not like it; and then he might not
punish him.
-29A wicked person has no future-nothing to look forward to

-30Have reverence for the Lord, my son, and honour the king. Have nothing to do with
people who rebel against them; such men could be ruined in a moment. Do you
realize the disaster that God or the king can cause?

The Capable Wife

How hard it is to find a capable Wife! She is worth far more than jewels!
Her husband puts his confidence in her, and she will never be poor.
As long as she lives, she does him good and never harm.
She keeps herself busy making wool and linen cloth.
She brings home food from out-of-the-way places as merchant ships do.
She gets up before daylight to prepare food for her family and to tell her servantgirls what to do
She is a hard worker, strong and industrious
She knows the value of everything she makes, and works late into the night.
She spins her own thread and weaves her own cloth.
She is generous to the poor and needy.
She doesnt worry when it snows, because her family has warm clothing.
Her husband is well known, one of the leading citizens.
She makes clothes and belts and sells them to merchants.
She is strong and respected and not afraid of the future.
She speaks with a gentle wisdom
She is always busy and looks after her familys needs.
Her children show their appreciation and her husband praises her.
He says, Many women are good wives, but you are the best of them all.
Give her credit for all she does. She deserves the respect of everyone.

More Proverbs

Never criticize a servant to his master. You will be cursed and suffer for it.
There are people who curse their fathers and do not show their appreciation for
their mothers.
There are people who think they are pure when they are as filthy as they can be.
There are four animals in the world that are small, but very, very clever:
Ants: They are weak, but they store up their food in the summer.
Rock-badgers: They are not strong either, but they make their homes among the
rocks.
Locusts: They have no King, but they move in formation.
Lizards: You can hold one in your hand, but you can find them in palaces.

More wise sayings

It is wrong for a judge to be prejudiced.

If he pronounces a guilty person innocent, he will be cursed and hated by
everyone.
Judges who punish the guilty, however, will be prosperous and enjoy a good
reputation.
An honest answer is a sign of true friendship.
Dont build your house and establish a home until your fields are ready, and you
are sure that you can earn a living.
Dont give evidence against someone else without good reason, or say misleading
things about him.
Have a nap and sleep if you want to, fold your hands and rest awhile, but while
you are asleep, poverty will attack you like a armed robber.

Wisdom of Solomon

Introduction
This book makes use of the ideas borrowed from Greek philosophy in order to teach that
God rewards those who are faithful to him.

The Search for Justice

Those who do not try to test Him will find him; He will show himself to those
who trust Him.
Dishonest thoughts separate people from God, and if we are foolish enough to test
him, his power will put us to shame.
Wisdom will never be at home with anyone who is deceitful or who is a slave of
sin.
Everyone who is holy has learnt to stay away from deceitful people, he will not
stay around when foolish thoughts are being expressed; he will not feel
comfortable when injustice is done.

God is aware of what we say

Wisdom is a spirit that is friendly to people, but she will not forgive anyone who
speaks against God, for God knows our feelings and thoughts, and hears our every
word.
Since the Lords spirit fills the entire world, and holds everything in it together,
she knows every word that people say.
The intentions of the ungodly people will be closely examined; their words will
be reported to the Lord, and then they will get the punishment that their
wickedness deserves.
God will tolerate no challenge, and since he hears everything, you cannot hide
your complaining from him.

Page 9

So be sure that you do not go about complaining-it does no good-and dont

engage in bitter talk.
The most secret things you say will have their consequences, and lying will
destroy your soul.

Wicked thinking

The wicked say, come on, then, lets enjoy the good things of life, and live in this
world just as we did when we were young and free of care! Lets drink the most
expensive wines and use the finest perfumes. Lets not miss a single flower in the
springtime! Before the roses wither, lets pick them and wear them in our hair!
Lets all join in and leave signs everywhere of our carefree revelry! Life owes us
that much!
Well oppress the poor, even if they are righteous. Well show no respect for
widows or old people.
Well call ourselves right if we are strong enough to get what we want.
No one ever got anywhere by being weak!
Righteous people are nothing but a nuisance, so lets look for chances to get rid of
them.
If the righteous really are Gods children, God will save them from their enemies,
so lets put them to the test. We will be cruel to them, and torment them; then well
find out how calm and reasonable they are! Well find out just how much they can
stand!
That is how evil people think, but they are wrong. They are blinded by their own
wickedness; they have never known Gods secrets, never hoped for the rewards of
a holy and blameless life.
When God created us, he did not intend that we should die; he made us like
himself.
It was the Devils jealousy that brought death into the world, and those who belong
to the Devil are the ones who will die.

Page 9

The Destiny of the Righteous

But righteous people are protected by God and will never suffer torment.
It is foolish mistake to think that righteous people die and that their death is a
terrible evil.
In fact the righteous are at peace.
Their sufferings were light compared with the blessings they will receive.
God has tested them, like gold in a furnace, and found them worthy to be with
Him.
He has accepted them, just as he accepts the sacrifices which his worshippers burn
on the altar.
When God comes to reward the righteous, they will blaze out against the wicked
like fire in dry straw.
They will rule over nations and people, and the Lord will be their king for ever.
Those who have put their trust in God will come to understand the truth of His
ways.
Those who have been faithful will live with Him in His Love, for He is kind and
merciful to the ones whom He has chosen.

The Destiny of the Wicked

The ungodly, however, will get the punishment their wicked thoughts deserve,
because they rebelled against the Lord and ignored what was right.
A man who has no use for wisdom or education has a miserable life in store for
him.
He has nothing to hope for.
His labors are useless, and he will never accomplish anything worth while.
The woman he marries will turn out to be irresponsible, and his children will go
wrong.
All his descendants will be under a curse.

The Importance of Virtue

On Judgment Day the man who has been castrated will be rewarded with
happiness if he has kept the law and has not stored up resentment against the
Lord. Because he has been faithful, he will receive a special reward more precious
than having children: a place in the Lords heavenly Temple.
Honest deeds are like a tree that bears marvelous fruit.
But children born of adultery or of a forbidden union will die an early death.
Yet even if they do live a long time, they will never amount to anything.
They will not be respected in their old age, and if they die young, they will have
no hope or comfort on Judgment day.
Children born of a forbidden union suffer a miserable fate.
It is better to have virtue, even if it means having no children.
Your virtue will be recognized by other people and by God, and you will be
remembered for it forever.
No matter how many children are born of a forbidden union, none of them will
ever amount to anything.
Righteous people, however, will find rest, even if they die young.
Wisdom and righteousness are signs of the maturity that should come with old
age.
