I am writing to ask for your support for a truly special event I will be participating in on July 1, 2014. For the first time in history, American Samoa will be participating in the Miss United States pageant, and I have the utmost honor of representing the territory in Washington, DC for the 2014 Miss United States!
The Miss United States Organization exists for the purpose of providing an avenue of achievement for women and girls ages 8-40. At a local, state, and national level, the program promotes each titleholder's platform for service, while acting as a national partner with Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Titleholders further enjoy opportunities in fashion, media, and community events while giving back to their communities and being recognized as positive role models to young women across the nation. Under the direction of Chris Wilmer, the national Miss United States contest includes the divisions of Miss, Ms., Teen, Junior Teen, Pre-Teen, and Little Miss and takes place in Washington, DC during Independence Day activities.
As a rising senior in college and the first of my siblings to graduate post secondary school, I have come to understand the importance of positive role models. I aspire to share my story on a national level to encourage young, Samoan women across the diaspora to aspire and achieve all that they dream. With your help, I know we can make this a reality! I hope you will consider supporting my quest to be a part of the 2014 Miss United States Pageant.
As part of my participation in this pageant, I need to secure sponsors who would like to support me. Any amount would be greatly appreciated and more information can be found on the following pages of this document with further instructions. If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at (385) 229-7043 or missamericansamoa2014@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your support and I look forward to working together!
Sincerely,
Meagan Taulaimoana Palelei HoChing Miss American Samoa

MORE ABOUT MEAGAN MOANA
Originally from Nu'uuli, American Samoa, Meagan Taulaimoana (Moana) Palelei HoChing is in her final year as an undergraduate student at Harvard University currently concentrating in Social Sciences with a Field of Study in Government. As the daughter of Fia HoChing and Melissha Palelei, Meagan is the middle child of five children and a proud aunt of nine nieces and nephews.
Prior to going to Harvard, Meagan graduated with honors from Alta High School located in Sandy, Utah. While attending high school she also participated in four sports, leading her basketball and softball team as captain, her senior year. By graduation Meagan had lettered in basketball, softball, and track and field.
After her freshman year at Harvard University, Meagan deferred from college and served in AmeriCorps VISTA, where she was stationed in Las Vegas, Nevada. In her two year tenure with a local nonprofit, Meagan was able to secure and coordinate 200 different food drives and responsible for raising more than $750,000 in in-kind donations for homeless and at-risk communities across the Las Vegas community. In her last year with VISTA she was awarded with the Points of Light Volunteer Award, and honored to participate in The National 9/11 Flag project, picked to represent the state of Nevada.
By 2012, Meagan was able to partake in Harvards first summer abroad program in Kisumu, Kenya as part of the Innovations and Technology Innovations in Health Care course. She and her cohorts were able to develop sustainable green projects at the Great Lakes University Kisumu establishing a community garden called Bloom and Bud. The project involved urban farming with 100% recyclable materials, in an effort to provide food sustainability for those with minimal to no land or food security. While at Harvard University Meagan was involved in several student clubs such as the Institute of Politics (IOP), Harvard Womens Club Basketball Team, and the Phillips Brook House Associations (PBHA) HOOPS after school program. She also served as the President of the Pacific Islander Student Association (PISA), Board Member for the Harvard Extension Student Association (HESA), and President of the Harvard Extension International Relations Club (HEIRC). Meagan interned at the Harvard University Native American Program (HUNAP) as the media intern, where she had the ultimate honor of being the first non-Native to co-chair the Harvard University Powwow. Earlier this year, Governor Herbert of Utah, awarded Meagan with the Outstanding Student Educator Award for her example in the community.
As a rising senior Meagan has decided to take the year of 2014 off to study abroad as part of the University of Aucklands Pacific Studies program where she looks forward to deepening her understanding of challenges that face Pacific Islander communities, as well as solutions. Upon returning from New Zealand, Meagan will be graduating in the spring of 2015 as the first of her siblings to graduate from college. Meagan sets her sights on hopefully being the first of her entire
5 family to attend law school and dreams of being accepted into Stanford Law School or Harvard Law School.
