Many boys admired Tom Sawyer. In the beginning of the book The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer, Tom was a trickster, mean, and selfish. He would trick people to do things that would
benefit him. Throughout the book, he started to become a selfless young man. At the end of the
book he made people feel welcome, helped solve a crime, and figured out how to get out a cave
My first example when Tom is selfless is when Tom, Huck, and Joe came back from their
adventure. Tom and his friends Huck and Joe were away on an adventure being pirates. They did
not tell anybody they were leaving. At their Funeral, they made a grand entrance. Everybody
was so excited to see Tom and Joe, but poor Huck does not have any parents so no one was
excited to see him. Aunt Polly, It aint fair. Somebodys got to be glad to see Huck
1
If Tom
acted as he was at the beginning of the book, he would have loved all the attention and not even
worried about Huck.
My second example that Tom shows change in selfishness is when Tom and Huck
witnessed a murder. Tom and his friend Huck went to a graveyard; while they were there, they
saw a murder. They saw the murderer framed poor Muff Potter. Toms fearful secret and
gnawing conscience disturbed his sleepevery day or two, during this time of sorrow, Tom
watched his opportunity and went to the little grated jail-window and smuggled such small
comforts
2
In the end Tom told the truth and Muff Potter was not arrested. If not for Tom,
Muff Potter would have gone to jail.
My third example when Tom was caring was when Tom helped comfort Becky in the cave.
Tom and Becky went with some friends into a cave. They left the group and never returned.
Becky was very scared in the cave and had no idea how to get out. She sat down. Tom rested
with her, and they talked of home...Tom tried to think of some way of comforting her.
3
They
were able to get out of the cave with strategies. Who knows what would have happed, if Tom
were not there to comfort Becky.
In conclusion, Tom Sawyer used to be a very selfish boy but grew into a selfless young man.
Tom was very selfless during many parts of the story. A few examples were when he helped
Huck, solved a crime, and comforted Becky. I think that Tom really did change in this story. The
author really did a good job of explaining that.
