Models and Strategies of Teaching

Appendix A
Sample Assignment
HMEF5123 Models and Strategies for Teaching
INSTRUCTIONS: Each student has to carry out the task during the semester. You are
not allowed to work in groups or pairs. Submit the bound portfolio to your course
facilitator during the fourth seminar.
I. THE TASK
Prepare a bound portfolio for submission to your academic facilitator based on the
following: (a) Planning (b) Teaching and (c) Evaluation of a single lesson using the
concept attainment model of instruction as covered in the course.
II. GUIDELINES
This assignment is focussed on the implementation of the concept attainment model in
your own classroom. In addition to the assigned textbook, you may draw from other
references and your own classroom experiences. Your portfolio should include entries
for all the areas (a-d) listed below. Include a HEADING for each section so that it is
well organized and reading friendly.
(a) The Students
Identify a group of students (minimum 5) whom you can teach. They may be students
from your college or school, or those who live in your neighbourhood. For the portfolio
entry, write a short description of the students you have chosen to teach. Include details
such as language proficiency, their age and past academic performance. (Maximum
300 words)
(b) The Lesson Plan
Write a Lesson Plan based on the model you have chosen. The plan is for one lesson,
which may last 45 to 60 minutes. Include in your lesson plan (i) the objectives, (ii)
steps and (iii) worksheets. (4-6 pages, including handouts and worksheets)
(c) The Lesson
Teach the class following the lesson plan you prepared as in (c) above. Make
arrangements to have the lesson recorded (audio- or video-recording) so that you have a
record of what happened during the lesson. You can ask a colleague to assist you with
the audio/video recording, but he/she should NOT teach with you. Use the audio/video
recording of your lesson to evaluate or critique the model and your lesson.

(d) The Evaluation
This section of your portfolio is to be done after you have taught the lesson. Write an
evaluation of your lesson and of the model. You may present the evaluation in the
form of a reflective personal account. Remember that this is an assignment based on
the implementation of a model, and you will not be penalized for having conducted a
lesson that has one or two shortcomings. It is of utmost importance that you focus on
what transpired during the lesson, and not on what you wish you had done. You may
use the questions below as a guide to evaluating the lesson. (Maximum 5 pages)
(i) Teaching Effectiveness: What was the most effective part of your lesson? Was
there a difference between what you planned and what you taught? Do you think
the concept attainment model is useful for some reasons or learning outcomes
and not for others? What worked particularly well with your class? Will you use
this model again?
(ii) Learner Response: Were students responsive to using the concept attainment
model? Do you think your students learnt what you intended to teach? Why or
why not?
(iii) Improvement: If you were asked to do the lesson all over again, what would you
do differently? How would you change or improve upon? Did you choose the
right strategies? Would you recommend this writing model to your colleagues?
What was the most instructive part of the lesson for you as a teacher?
III. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION
Your portfolio will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:
(1) Clear description of students demonstrating your knowledge of their background and
abilities, in relation to the subject you chose.
(2) Credible rationale for lesson/activities that shows your awareness of the various
attributes of the model as well as strategies of teaching.
(3) Detailed lesson plan commensurate with the intended aims of the model.
(4) Detailed evaluation demonstrating understanding and application of key elements of
the model as well as thoughtful exploration of instructional decisions made.
(5) Appropriate referencing for all material taken from print and online sources. Note that
plagiarism in any form will be severely dealt with and will render your portfolio a
Fail Grade.
