Section B: Statistics [60 marks]

6 Tom and his friend Mary are going out for dinner with their parents at a restaurant. Find the
number of ways that the 6 of them can be seated at a round table of 6 if
(i) each family is to be seated together, [2]
(ii) only their parents need to be seated with their respective spouses. [2]

When they arrive at the restaurant, the waiter informs them that there are only 2 round tables
of 3 available.
(iii) Find the number of ways that they can be seated if there are no restrictions on the
seating arrangement. [2]

7 Three cards are drawn from a pack of 52 ordinary playing cards, at random and without
replacement. Find the probability that
(i) exactly two of the cards are spades, [2]
(ii) more than one card is a diamond, [2]
(iii) all three cards are of different suits. [3]

particular village with mean 39 and variance

(i) State, in context, two assumptions needed for X to be well-modelled by a binomial
distribution. [2]
(ii) Assuming that X follows a binomial distribution, find the maximum value that X can
take. [2]
(iii) It is given that 8% of the children who have received vaccination are autistic.
Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that there are more than
35 children who have received vaccination and are not autistic. [4]

9 The time spent visiting a particular bookstore by Raphael and Elizabeth may be assumed to be
independent and normally distributed with means 35 minutes and 30 minutes, and standard
deviations 2.2 minutes and 1.1 minutes respectively.

(i) Find the probability that the total time spent by Raphael in three separate visits exceeds
twice the time spent by Elizabeth in a single visit by not more than 40 minutes. [3]
(ii) Calculate the probability that the time spent by Raphael is less than Elizabeth during a
particular visit to the bookstore. [2]
(iii) Given that there is a probability of less than 0.012 that the first time Raphael spends
less time than Elizabeth is on the
th
n visit, find the least value of n . [3]

10 A research is conducted on a random sample of 20 children who have consumed bubble tea,
and it is found that their mean glucose level is 91.6 milligrams per decilitre (mg/dl) with
standard deviation 15 mg/dl.
Test, at the 1% significance level, whether the mean glucose level exceeds 83 mg/dl. State,
giving a reason, whether any assumptions about the population are needed in order for the test
to be valid. [4]

Another research is conducted on a random sample of 50 children. The glucose levels,
x mg/dl, of the children are summarised by
( )
2
4400, 88 11020 x x = =

.
Find unbiased estimates of the population mean and variance based on the sample of 50
children. [2]
Test, at the 2% significance level, whether the mean glucose level is 83 mg/dl. [3]

11 In a school examination, the essay and comprehension scores of a class of 7 students are given
as follows:
Essay (x) 48 38 29 60 71 42 55
Comprehension (y) 50 35 33 62 80 40 50

(i) Draw a scatter diagram of y against x. [2]
(ii) Find the product moment correlation coefficient and comment on its value in relation to
the scatter diagram in part (i). [2]
(iii) Find the equations of the least squares regression lines of y on x and x on y. [2]
(iv) If a student in the school scored 70 for comprehension, use the appropriate regression
line to estimate his essay score and comment on the reliability of this estimate. [2]
(v) Another student who sat for the same examination is transferred to this class. When the
scores of this student are included in the data set given above, the product moment
correlation coefficient remains unchanged. State a possible pair of scores this student
could have obtained. [1]
(vi) Moderation is carried out and 3 marks are added to each students essay score. State,
with a reason, whether there is a change in the value of the product moment correlation
coefficient. [1]

12 An insurance salesman sells two types of insurance policies, life and accident. He sells an
average of 1.3 life policies per week. Calculate the probability that he sells at least one life
policy in a randomly chosen week. [1]

Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that the number of life policies he sells in
a randomly chosen ten-week period is fewer than 18. You may assume that the sale of a life
policy is independent of another. [3]

The mean number of accident policies he sells in a two-week period is 1.4. Find the probability
that in a given two-week period, the total number of policies he sells is at least 4 but fewer than
8. State an assumption you have made in your calculations. [3]

Calculate also the probability that the salesman sells exactly 2 accident policies in a randomly
chosen two-week period given that he sold a total of 5 policies in the two-week period. [3]

In his company, the salesman will be given a pay raise if he sells an average number of more
than 1.4 life policies per week for a work year of 50 weeks. Calculate the probability that he
will get his pay raise for any particular work year. [2]
