For more than 140 years the
Technische Universitt Mnchen
has combined scientifc exper-
tise with an entrepreneurial mind-
set. Ever since the university was
founded as a polytechnic school
in 1868, TUM has played an ac-
tive role in transforming Bavar-
ia from an agricultural state to a
high-tech location. Rooted in this
tradition we have created a pow-
erful international network and in
the process become an interna-
tional university ourselves. Today
our graduates are active around the globe, and TUM profes-
sors make important contributions to world research. With
more than 450 professors and over 8,000 additional staff,
we offer academic and research opportunities to over 26,000
students. More than 15 per cent of our staff and over 17 per-
cent of our students come from abroad, creating a univer-
sity culture which is cosmopolitan and hospitable. In Europe
and worldwide, TUM maintains over 400 university partner-
ships and collaborates with many international research in-
stitutions.
TUM was one of the prestigious institutions selected for an
award of excellence in 2006 as part of the Excellence Initia-
tive launched by the German Federal Government. Our uni-
versity achieves top results in all its core felds of education
and research: engineering and economics, natural and life
sciences, medicine and sports. In addition interdisciplinary
programmes offer many opportunities to carry out innova-
tive projects. Throughout its academic and research felds,
TUM is dedicated to insuring that new knowledge and pro-
ducts improve the quality of human life and protect the en-
vironment.
At Technische Universitt Mnchen you have the unique
chance to experience the spirit of an entrepreneurial univer-
sity in the very heart of Europe.

Welcome to Munich
One of TUMs advantages lies in its location. Munichs histo-
ric city centre with its many monuments and restaurants, the
wealth of cultural offerings, and of course, Munichs proxim-
ity to the Alps.
Munich is home to 7 major libraries, 49 city libraries and 45
museums serving the approximately 84,000 students study-
ing at its 11 universities and colleges. In the evenings, stu-
dents can choose from 42 theatres, 3 opera houses, 3 world-
renowned orchestras and close to 90 cinemas. Because of
the 1972 Olympic Games and the 1974 & 2006 Soccer World
Cup games, Munich is also famous as a City of Sports.
The Olympic Games also brought Munich additional sports
facilities now available to students, as well as one of the best
subway networks in Europe. The subway (U-Bahn) system
is constantly being expanded.
Munichs charm also attracts industry and commerce. Fol-
lowing World War II, Munich developed into a leading and
economically signifcant metropolitan area in Germany. Our
students are able to fnd both internships and permanent po-
sitions at well-known companies such as BMW, EADS and
Siemens. With 2,500 microelectronics companies, Munich is
also a leader in key technology. Munichs strong interest in
fostering business goes back to its earliest days.
In 1158, Duke Heinrich der Lwe decided to divert the lu-
crative salt trade from the Bishop of Freising by destroying
the bridge across the Isar River and building a new bridge
near the settlement of Munich. As a result, the salt traders
and buyers were forced to cross the new bridge into Munich
as they travelled from the salt mines into the West. The frst
mention of Munich is in a document in which Kaiser Bar-
barossa grants Munich the right to serve as a market town.
2008 marked Munichs 850th anniversary.
Munich quickly grew and the town was fortifed. In the early
14th century, a second fortifcation wall was built under Em-
peror Ludwig dem Bayern, who also granted the city use
of the kingdoms offcial colours, yellow and black. Until
that time, the city crest had featured a monk, now called
the Mnchener Kindl. The picture of the monk goes back
to Munichs supposed beginning as a monastic settlement.
The city was proud to add the kingdoms colours to its crest.
Over the years, Munich became the sole Bavarian residence
of the Wittelsbachers. As the familys importance grew,
Munich became the capital city of the duchy (1504), then of
the electorate (1623), and under Napoleon, the Kingdom of
Bavaria (1806).
After freeing itself from the confnement of medieval fortify-
ing walls, the city entered a century of building and expan-
sion under the Kings Max I Joseph, Ludwig II and Max II
Joseph. Many of Munichs attractions that lure visitors from
throughout the world were constructed at this time: Ludwig-
strae, Knigsplatz, the Opera, Maximilianstrae, the Statue
of Bavaria, Ruhmeshalle, the Alte Pinakothek (art museum),
among others.

tions.
Aptitude Test
At TUM aptitude tests are conducted for the majority of
study courses. Several criteria are used in the selection of
students: frst university degree, motivation letters and pos-
sibly hands-on experience in connection with the planned
course of study as well as, in some cases, an interview with
the admissions committee. This interview is not an exam. It is
an interview designed to fnd out whether it can be expected
that the applicant will master his/her studies successfully.
Scholarships
There are lots of possibilities to receive a grant for studying
in Germany. Take a look at
http://portal.mytum.de/studium/studienfnanzierung/

can apply for a scholarship from the university.
stipendien @ zv.tum.de
http://portal.mytum.de/studium/stip/st24/
In 1862, TUMs older sibling, Ludwig-Maximilians-Univer-
sitt, was moved from Landshut to Munich. In 1868 the
Fairy Tale King Ludwig II founded TUM.
Despite Munichs close ties to the ruling Bavarian family,
it was here that Germanys frst revolution took place after
World War I. The Wittelsbachers were driven out, and a
Soviet Republic was established. The German government
in Berlin eventually used military force to put an end to this
Bavarian Communist Experiment.
From 1933 1945, the city tragically rose to fame, as Hitler
who began his political career here declared Munich to
be the Capital of the Movement (Previously, Munich had
primarily been known as the Capital of Beer). Of the 12,000
Jews who had been living in Munich, 7,500 fed when the
Nazis came to power. Nearly 3,000 were deported to con-
centration camps, more than half to Theresienstadt. By the
end of Nazi reign of terror, more than 70 % of Munichs city
centre had been destroyed. In contrast to other cities, Mu-
nich residents decided to restore their historic city centre to
its pre-war state.
Munichs charm is based on this unique mixture of the old
with the new. With approximately 1,3 million residents, Ger-
manys third largest city (after Berlin and Hamburg) has
something to offer for everyone. In Munich there is more to
discover than the citys clichd image as a cosy city on the
Isar River might suggest.

TUM is one of four universities (TUM, LMU, University of
Rennes, University of Turin) that participate in this two year
ERASMUS MUNDUS Masters programme, which is coordi-
nated by the University of Rennes in close conjunction with
European Large Scale Facilities. The programme, mainly
aimed at non-European postgraduate students, focuses on
one of this centurys core topics in materials science, the
application of neutrons and other types of radiation on ma-
terials. After having attended a mandatory two-week sum-
mer school in Rennes / France, participants enroll in lectures
and lab courses at one of the four universities during the frst
semester (30 ECTS). The second semester (also worth 30
ECTS credits) is devoted to research and writing the Masters
thesis. Students select their two universities to correspond
with their areas of specialization and research interests. Both
University of Rennes and University of Turin offer a focus
on chemistry, while LMU Munich emphasizes geo-materi-
als and geochemistry. TUM with its research reactor FRM II
(www.frm2.tum.de) specializes in physics.

The TUM Graduate School is the award-winning, cross-
faculty programme for all doctoral candidates associated
with a chair at the TUM. It aims to enhance the young sci-
entists frst steps as independent researchers and prepare
them for leadership positions in both academia and industry.

At the TUM Graduate School about 3,500 doctoral can-
didates, joined in thirteen Faculty Graduate Centers and
nine Thematic Graduate Centers, have access to exclusive
advanced training courses and the Graduate Schools ser-
vices. While the graduate centers arrange for subject related
training and take care of the administrative part of a disser-
tation, the TUM Graduate School itself fosters internation-
alization and networking among its doctoral candidates. A
research stay abroad, a four-day Kick-Off and a one-day
Final Seminar are mandatory to all members, securing an
excellent transferable skills training meeting the best of
international standards.
Through the early setting up of a supervision agreement the
TUM Graduate School programme helps to structure each
individual doctoral project. Also, a second mentor is ready
to give independent advice on both academic and personal
issues.
All requirements for the TUM Graduate School certifcate
allow for fexible arrangements to ft into the doctoral candi-
dates daily research routine and work at the departments.
