Writing
Bridging
What background
knowledge do the students
already have?
The students have some background knowledge about business in
their first language. They have already know how to read the charts in
their L1.
What will you do to activate
or link students prior
knowledge or experience to
upcoming content?
I will ask students what they know about the gas prices in San Diego,
and I will gradually introduce three charts to the students.
Engagement with New Material
What will you do to engage
students in the active
learning of the new
material?
- I will tell students my story, and introduce the three charts.
Gas price may be a very interesting topic. I will use the gas
price chart from
http://www.sandiegogasprices.com/Retail_Price_Chart.aspx
(Authentic material)
- Introduce three kinds of charts, and help them to remember
the name of the charts:
- Line Chart
- Pie Chart (Like an apple pie or a pumpkin pie)
- Bar Chart (Like an chocolate bar)
- Me: I bought a car in March last year. It's a VW rabbit. I
love this car even if its not a gas saving car. I didnt care
much about the gas price until I got my car in the United
States. But I am so sad because every time I need more gas,
I found the gas price is higher than last week. Do you have
idea what is the gas price today?
- Me: But if I want to convince you that the gas price is
increasing all the time, what should I do?
- Me: Shall I collect the gas price every day or every week?
Shall I compare them? Then, shall I get a set of data of the
gas price in San Diego? I did some research, and found this
one
- Then, PPT slide. This is the gas price in San Diego from Jan
29 Feb 27, 2014.
- What do we call this?
- S: Line chart
- T: very good! We call this line chart!
- How about this one?
- This one is like a pie (picture at the same time). We call it a
pie chart.
- How about this one?
Every piece in this chart is like a chocolate bar. We call it a
bar chart.
What will you do to ensure
that all students are
engaged?
I will use a hook in this story.
I will ask questions when I am telling my story.
I will explain to students why we are learning this lesson, and
state the importance of this lesson.
Application
What opportunities will you
provide students to practice
and apply their
knowledge/skill to meet the
objectives for this lesson?
To apply to other contexts?
(1) I will have a brainstorm with students about how to describe
increase, decrease, big change, and small change. Students will
need to come up with some ideas about the vocabulary.
(In this activity, I will guide students to think about the verbs and
adverbs to describe the trends.)
(2) Handout 1: describe business trends in different ways.
I will let students do some exercises by switching verb + adverb
and adjective + noun
(3) You pose, I describe (10 minutes)
I will explain to students how to play this game. I will have a
picture on PPT in which there will be several tall and short people
stand in a line. I will let students imagine there will be lines
between each students head.
I will invite 4 students to come to the front of the class, stand high
and low. And let students describe the trends
I will let the audience describe the trends.
(4) Since we have already learned how to describe the trends. Lets
watch a video. There are 3 things you are asked to pay attention
to:
The phrases the presenter used (e.g. dramatically drop)
How the presenter draws audiences attention?
What do you think he did well when he is doing the
presentation?
This video gave students an example of how to do presentation
appropriately in a business setting. Presentation skills is important
to their next project in the assessment part.
Assessment
How will you assess their
learning of the objectives?
I will let students do a big project as an assessment.
Explain what the students will do in this project.
Students will be divided into 3 groups. Each group will be given a
chart. Students will need to interpret the chart and discuss how to
describe it in groups.
Each group will choose a chart to interpret. Each case is different.
Closing
How will you help students
recap the learning and link it
back to the original purpose
of the lesson?
I will let each group do a short presentation to the class
according to the give chart.
Other students will have an evaluation form to fill in. So students
will pay attention to others presentation.
Technology
If applicable for your
context and your lesson, how
will you meaningfully
integrate technology into
your lesson?

I will let students watch a video from the Internet.
I will use the chart from a website, which is an authentic
material.
Reflection
What went well? How do you
know?
1. I found that students all learned two different ways to express
business trends:
verb + adverb
adjective + noun
I know it because students did a few activities by using these
forms to describe the business trends in the class.

What didnt go as planned? Time-management.
As was planed,
What contingency plan did you
employ?
Doing a project integrating all the topics in the course.
What would you do differently
next time?
More scaffolding.
Did your students meet the
purpose and objectives for this
lesson? How do you know?
Most of the students were able to describe the business trends using
the words learned in the class. But some of the students avoided using
the vocabulary words.
What do your students need
next? How do you know?
When doing the group discussion for analyzing the advertisements, I
think I will make a handout in which lists all the features that they
should analyze. This time, I list all the features on the projector. But
it seems that when students are

What can you do to work on
your areas needing growth?
observers evaluation form, I found that I was not supposed to correct
some of the students errors in their presentations which could be
corrected. When students were doing presentation, I put too much
focus on how students use the verb+adverb or adjective+noun forms
instead of their grammar mistakes. Next time, I think I can correct
some of the big mistakes in order to better support students to convey
meaning.
Another thing I need to grow is my language skills, especially
speaking skills. I misused he and she for some times in the class,
which may make students feel uncomfortable. From this
phenomenon, we can also learn that such easy grammar rules can be
used incorrectly in advanced English learners. I know exactly the
rules, but I still even to monitor myself a lot when I am speaking.

Job Growth
After a chilly month for job growth in December, hiring
warmed up a bit in January. But not by much.
The U.S. economy added 113,000 jobs last month, according to the government.
That's an improvement from December, but was far weaker than hoped. Economists
had been expecting an addition of 178,000 jobs.

They called the report "disappointing" and "weak," but characterized broader
economic growth as "steady-as-she-goes."
"The U.S. economy is very stable," said Julia Coronado, chief economist, North
America for BNP Paribas. "2014 might not be a breakout year, but it's not a disaster
either."
Many economists had also been hoping that December's weak job gains would be
revised much higher, as many experts were quick to write off the December report as
a fluke. The number was revised higher, but only by 1,000 jobs to 75,000.
