Tobacco is a plant from Nicotiana of the Solanaceae family, it has over eighty kinds and it is
grown in six continents and over one hundred twenty countries. ---- Slide

2. All tobacco products, corresponding to NACE(Statistical classification of economic
activities in the European Community) Rev 1.1 Division 16, which is part of the food,
beverages and tobacco sector. It is located in SITC(Standard International Trade
Classification (Rev. 4) section 1-Beverages and Tobacco and its division code is 12. Tobacco
is divided two section; unmanufactured tobacco and manufactured tobacco. Unmanufactured
tobacco means tobacco leafs and unstripped tobacco; manufactured tobacco means cigarette,
cigars, cigarillos etc. We will discuss more manufactured tobacco- Slide

3. Tobacco is mostly used for smoking and there are over 1.2 billion tobacco users in the world.
Almost one billion of them live in developing countries. This number is expected to increase
to 1.6 billion over the next two decades. - Slide

unmanufactured tobacco. The second one is India. Slide

5. The global cigarette industry is one of the most profitable and deadliest industries in the
world. Almost seven hundred billion dollar retail values in 2012. Near with 6 trillion sticks
cigarette were sold. The consumption is increasing in developing countries, let we see that on
pie chart. slide

6. Pie chart: Globally, cigarette consumption is growing in low- and middle income countries
and decreasing in high-income countries. Sales are shifting from developed markets, like those
in Western Europe where smoking prevalence is declining and where tobacco company
operations are more restricted by government policies, to emerging markets like those in Asia
and Africa where tobacco companies take full advantage of lax regulatory environments,
growing populations and increasing incomes-slide

7. The five largest cigarette consuming nations -China, Russia, U.S., Japan and Indonesia-
account for 60% of the volume of all cigarettes sold in 2012. Seven of the ten largest cigarette
markets in 2012 were emerging markets, four of which are Asian Pacific countries. slide

9. When we look the major players of tobacco industry, we can see 4 private and 1 state-owned
company. The biggest one is China National Tobacco Corporation. It is is owned and operated
by the Chinese government. It produces fourty one percent of the worlds total consumption of
cigarettes. But It sells the majority of its product in China; just over one percent of cigarettes
produced are exported to other countries. slide

10. Philip Morris International is a U.S company. It controls an estimated fifteen percent of the
international cigarette market. operates in over 180 countries, and sells 7 of the top 15 brands,
including Marlboro, the worlds best-selling cigarette brand. It is more focus on emerging
market like China, the Philipphines and Indonesia. slide

11. British American Tobacco is the U.K company, it operates in 180 country and controls eleven
percent of global market share. Seventy five of its sales volume is distributed in emerging
markets, and the company is currently focusing on how to increase sales in Asian markets
slide

12. Japan Tobacco International is japanese company, operates in a hundred twenty country, it is
the fourth largest tobacco company in the world and controls 8% of the global cigarette market
slide

13. Imperial Tobacco is the U.K company, it controls four percent of the international cigarette
market. Imperial operates in over 160 markets, with fifty six percent of its products sold in
emerging markets. -slide

14. Tobacco has been used for centuries by billions of people, numerous nationalities. a lot of
technological changes were happened, but the rate of using tobacco did not decrease,
nevertheless it increased. It is hard to say that tobacco industry is vulnerable across to
technological changes. On the other hand, in last two decades, the rate of addictiveness of
tobacco is decreasing especially in developed countries thanks to easiness of reaching the
information with technological changes. The people can be aware of the damage of tobacco
more easily thanks to technology. Also, to reduce consumption of tobacco, new alternatives
like electronic cigarette is invented. - Slide

15. It is hard to say that tobacco has so many substitutes or alternatives. Because, most of people
who use tobacco are addicted to tobacco. Smoking is an indispensable requirement for them.
However, there are several products which can be called as substitute such as e-cigarette,
nicotine patches, nicotine gum, nicotine inhalers, herbal cigarettes. TABLO: when we
examine the table, there is forty five million smokers in U.S, also there is over two million e-
cigarette smoker. It shows us, maybe e- cigarette can be good alternative to reduce tobacco
consumption.
