REFLECTIVE JOURNAL 1
By reading the first topic, Language and Communication from various sources I can
see that there are lot of knowledge that I can add in during studying this chapter. I
realize that this topics is too widespread. So I can conclude that studying using one
sources is not enough to gain a perfect knowledge about this topics.
In the syllabus, I just able to study Malaysian culture only, but when I referred
to the other sources, this can be happen out of our country. This topics is the best
topics to learn during this semester. I do not know why, but I just can decide that
learning about other cultures is the best part in this topics especially we spot our
learning on their dialects.
First, I had learn about Language and communication. There were a lot of
quotation we can links to the definition of language. I cannot learn all of its, but by
studying this paper or during completing this task I have an idea about language and
it definition. By compiling other sources I can found a lot about this chapter. Finally it
make me more confident study this subject.
In addition, my core references from internet. As we know, there is a lot of
problem had happen during finding the references from internet. By using college
Wifi, I can access certain webpage because they had been block. So I need to
subscribe my broadband. Sometime I go to Mc Donald to surf for the information.
From my first reference it mostly talking about relative culture such as black
English man. So, automatically I can understand the culture from the outsider and
how the use their English. One of the most importance thing I got is, even an
European got their own dialect. Example, American people have difference dialect
compare with Britain.
Then, I can learn clearly about the structural of language. Actually, linguistics
is the scientific study of a spoken language that involve several areas analysis such
as phonology, morphology, lexicon and syntax. In this chapter, it does not talk more
about this four aspect. So I just ignore this four aspect first because referring to the
topic, this aspect will be discuss more in the other topics.

According from my reading, I can conclude that, this topic discuss more about
the introduction of this topic. Because, in this topic they just focusing on the definition
of language, the function of the language and how the people in different culture use
this language including their pronunciation or dialect.

Next, I move to the second topic, Introduction to Phonology. Steps by steps the
topic become more challenging because a lot thing need to memorize. For example,
speech organs. It hard to be memorize if we does not understand because we
should know the function of the every part of speech organs and how it position
during saying some word.
Honestly, it hard for me to understand this topic. Maybe this is something new
for me. So, I dont dare to find the information from internet because I fear to find the
information out of my box. So, I decide to find a some book from library to get the
references for this chapter. Actually, it hard for me to understand the point-point that
I got from the book. So finally I just ask my class members to understand the
references that I got.
There a lot of information that I can get from this books that related to this
chapter. The addition information I got from the book is the flow of how human
produce sound. Consciously, I know that the initial flow is from our lung. The voices
produce come from the air that exhale from our lung then it hits out sound box to
produce vibration. The vibration will produce our voice.
Then, in this chapter, I had study about the vowel, diphthong and consonant
sound. For me this is the most challenging part from this chapter. In this subtopic, I
need to memorize the symbols which explaining the sound of the sound. I am very
week in memorizing, so I thought mentally I lost in this chapter. So, for me the
rational this assignment is make me become more confident to covering my
weaknesses. So, I had done some notes to memorize some points.
Finally, I conclude that, this chapter talk more about the specification of sound
with it sound and how to pronounce it correctly using our articulation.

For the third topic, I have learnt about morphemes, allomorphs, word structure and
word formation processes. From this from my reading, it allow me to understand
more about morpheme and allomorph. For me, this is something new that I found
during studying this subject. So I need focus more about this two aspect.
First of all, I got some problem with this two aspect. This aspect make me
confuse a little bit because for me the sound is almost same, so I got a big problem
here. So to overcome this problem, I get extra reading from internet about this two
elements until the fact make me become more confident with this two aspects.
So, the think that I can said about morpheme is, it is the minimal unit of
grammatical analysis or function. There are two types of morphemes which are
bound morpheme and free morphemes. Morpheme can be produce by adding the
prefix, suffix or affix to the root word. The example of morpheme is un+happy.
Then, allomorph is a unit meaning that can vary in sound but do not change
the meaning. There are two type of allomorph which are past tense allomorph and
plural allomorph. The think that make me confuse until now is, how can we
differentiate the both elements.
So, from my readings, I realize that morpheme is the smallest unit to form a
sentences. So it is important for those want to make a sentence. I also realize there
are many ways to form or expand words using some techniques. As the result, I can
explain more about the words formation.

REFLECTIVE JOURNAL 4
In this third reflective journal, I would like to combine the fourth and fifth chapter
which are Syntax and Semantics.
For the Syntax, I think there were no problem with it because I had already
learnt about this chapter even officially I did not learnt it. First I love to talk about
what is Syntax? Syntax mean the study of the principle and rules for construction
sentences in natural language. The three main element that I learnt were phrase,
clause and sentences.
From my previous study, I had already learnt about it even I did not exposed
to the word Syntax. For me it is the same as what had I already learnt before. But
there same addition knowledge that I can get from this chapter. I had learnt more
details about this three element. I learnt about the type and the structure of the
phrase, clause and sentences. So by studying this chapter, I can learnt how to make
a dramatic sentences even I can explain the structure confidently.
I can concluded that, in this topic I had learnt the elements to make the
sentences and explain the structure and the type of sentences. Then, I can broke the
sentences into a small pieces, I become clause and phrase.
Next in, I had leant chapter five which is Semantics. For me this topic is the
enjoyable topic that I had learnt from this topic especially ambiguous meaning. First I
would like to talk about what is Semantics is. Semantics is the of language which
focuses on it meaning.
I got a lot of information about this topic from my friends. They always give
some input for me. So I thought they have same feeling with me about this chapter.
This chapter need us to think critically about some words. For example, shy on
camera. Maybe the direct meaning is someone that shy when she or he a very shy
person when take a photo. But the real meaning is, someone to close an hard to
mixed with other person.
This double meaning word sometime make me and my friends laugh because
we interpreted the sentences wrongly. My conclusion is, this topic is the most
enjoyable topic that I had learnt from this subject.
