ABSTRACT
Friction stir welding (FSW), as a solid state joining process, is considered to be
one of the most advanced methods of welding of the last decade. During this process,
plastic deformation of welded material takes place and the values of temperature can
reach above 0.8 of the melting point of the material to be welded. One of the most
important aspect of FSW is the observation of material flow during this process.
Within the scope of this study, in order to observe material flow during FSW,
joining is applied using different parameters of the process. Material flow is observed
using Marker Insert Technique (MIT). For this reason, workpieces of AA5083 H111
with thickness of 6 mm were used and wires of copper were inserted in specific holes
which were created in the workpieces. Afterwards, microstucture and microhardness
of a reference workpiece were observed as well as material flow using optical
stereoscopy and microscopy. Then, the results were combined to produce a physical
model. Finally, a theoretical approach of material flow during FSW is proposed and
the results of this approach are compared with experimental values.
