BOE adopts
budget with
increase

The 2014-2015 Voorhees Town-
ship School Districts budget will
increase taxes for residents.
The Board of Education adopt-
ed an operating budget of $52.8
million at the public hearing on
May 7. The tax impact of this
budget on the average Voorhees
home assessed at $255,560 will be
a $5 a month increase.
The budgets revenue is made
up of $5.5 million in state aid, $43
million from the local tax levy,
$17,077 in federal aid and $1.1 mil-
lion from a budgeted fund bal-
ance.
The tax levy on residents
makes up the largest portion of
the budget, with a 2 percent in-
crease from the 2013-2014 budget.
This years budget strives to de-
velop a professional learning en-
vironment for the students, pro-
vide technology resources and
programs for students and to re-
duce energy usage and preserve
natural resources by reducing the
carbon footprint of the Voorhees
School District, school officials
said.
The 2014-2015 budget main-
tains all existing programs, while

The Freeholder Board honored
228 senior students who attend 34
public and nonpublic high
schools throughout Camden
County as Best of Class of 2014
during the 16th annual awards
presentation on May 6.
The students are unsung he-
roes chosen by their schools for
taking pride in academic achieve-
ment and striving to do their best
to improve themselves while
helping others in the process,
said Freeholder Director Louis
Cappelli, Jr.
The Freeholder Boards Best
of Class awards honored stu-
dents in seven categories: most
courageous, community service,
leadership, performing arts, most
improved, school spirit and best
overall.
The students were accompa-
nied by parents, friends and
school administrators. More
than 600 people attended the
event that recognized their
achievements.

in educating the children.

The board approved the lease
purchase of iPads for the
Voorhees Middle School in the
amount of $226,398.66 for three
years, for a total purchase price of
$679,195.98.
Members of the community
applauded Larry Osborne, the
Voorhees guidance counselor, for
his outstanding work. Members
of the community also recog-
nized the change in the boards
mission statement to reflect the
need for innovation.
The board elected to adopt all
curriculums and textbooks in ef-
fect as of May 7.

One of the most gratifying aspects of
being the mayor of Voorhees Township is
having the opportunity to witness and be
part of so many wonderful causes.
The Gibbsboro Voorhees Athletic Asso-
ciation and the Berlin Athletic Association
are hosting the Striking Out Kids Cancer
Tournament of Champions Baseball
Fundraiser on the weekend of June 6-8.
More than 30 teams from across the
Delaware Valley, ranging from 9U-15U age
groups, will compete at the GVAA and
BAA fields to raise funds and awareness
for pediatric cancer research. Tournament
players and attendees can expect a great
weekend of competitive baseball, vendors,
concessions and family fun. This fundrais-
ing event is being held in tribute to the
courageous children, teens and young
adults fighting pediatric cancer and in
memory of those who have lost their battle.
Event proceeds will benefit the Cancer
Center at The Childrens Hospital of
Philadelphia.

survival rate for young patients has risen
to 80 percent in the past half century, chil-
dren who survive frequently struggle with
life-long challenges and complications that
result from intense treatment.

prised of Berlin and GVAA volunteers
along with the Suarez Family of Voorhees.

ast year at this time, we
preached how important it was
to stay local for the summer-
time. We said that the 102 days be-
tween Memorial Day and Labor Day
weekends are crucial for the Jersey
Shore, which, no matter where you
live in our fine state, has a vital impact
on our economy.
We are now a year-and-a-half re-
moved from the devastation that was
caused by Hurricane Sandy, but some
Shore towns are still fighting to fully
recover. Beach remediation is all but
complete, and the boardwalks and
shops are up and running, for the most
part at least those that decided to re-
build.
But these Shore towns still need our
support.
Beach Season 2013 was not a good
one. As if rebuilding from Sandy was-
nt bad enough, an incredibly wet June
kept visitors away from the Shore dur-
ing prime weekends. Sales for stores
in the hardest-hit areas of the storm
were off anywhere from 20-40 percent
last year, according to state economic
reports. And Gov. Christies office esti-
mated that companies lost more than
$63 million in business due to the
storm.
So whats the message here? Its sim-
ple: Visit the Shore this summer, and
visit often.
New Jersey residents often take our
coastline for granted, but we should
realize how lucky we are to have such
a gem this close to home. So lets pay it
back this summer.
There are fewer than three weeks
until the official start of the summer
beach season, but with schools letting
out a little later this year thanks to the
snowy winter, there is still plenty of
time to plan your summer vacation at
the Jersey Shore.
The beach towns need your support,
now more than ever. Lets all dedicate
at least part of our summer to giving
back.

from small town shopping to large
scale retailers.

Eastern to replace basketball,
football coaches after resignations

Eastern High Schools football
and basketball teams will not
only be replacing graduated sen-
iors next season but head coaches
as football coach Dan Spittal and
boys basketball coach Joe Mur-
phy have both resigned.
Coach Murphy has successful-
ly led the boys basketball team at
Eastern High School during the
last nine seasons leading the
team to top 10 finishes and 20-plus
wins season the last four years. It
is safe to say the last nine years
have been the most successful
stretch of Viking boys basketball
in the schools history, vice prin-
cipal of athletics Phil Smart said
in a statement. Mr. Murphy is
more than a coach to his student
athletes, but a role model who
showed his students how to suc-
ceed and taught them life lessons
that guide them into their fu-
ture.
Eastern finished 24-5 last sea-
son, winning 13 of its last 15
games and advancing to the
South Jersey Group IV semifi-
nals.
For Murphy, the decision was
based around family.
"My oldest son is a freshman at
Delran, and I only saw him play
maybe three times," Murphy said.
"It's time to go back to being a
dad.
His experiences at Eastern
made the decision a tough one for
Murphy.
"It was certainly a difficult de-
cision. I really enjoyed coaching
the kids at Eastern. I had a con-
versation with the seniors com-
ing back and they understood,
Murphy said. It was a great ex-
perience. I coached in one of the
best conferences in South Jersey,
if not the entire state, and it had
some of the best coaches around.
I was fortunate to coach some
great kids that were special to
me."
Whoever replaces Spittal will
also have the unenviable task of
filling oversized shoes.
A veteran of 14 seasons, Spittal
leaves Eastern with an 86-61 ca-
reer record, directing the Vikings
to the 2003 South Jersey Group IV
title, the only sectional crown in
program history. He served as an
assistant for eight years before
taking the helm.
The Vikings went 10-2 last sea-
son, reaching the South Jersey
Group V championship game
against Cherokee. Spittal could
not be reached for comment.
