Question 3 What have you learnt from you audience feedback?

My approach to feedback was our class hosted a Media Studies Film Premiere Night. This event was a
chance for our class to receive feedback as well as interact with the audience not just by plainly giving a
questionnaire and putting the results on my blog but rather I concentrated on the reaction and facial
expression. This then gave me an indication of have I actually produced a short horror film which
presents the genre conventions that are common when associating with the concept of horror. Equally
has the audience reacted in the positive manner and did I manage to achieve my personal target of a
series of events. For example did they jump when the chilling scene were played or was the cinema
room filled with screams or even were people clinging on to one another.
Before I created my poster, ticket, short horror film I created a questionnaire and receive feedback so
that I could create a film based on some of the answers I received from the feedback made by people
who did my questionnaire. I decided to create a questionnaire as there are many advantages such as
1. Large amounts of information can be collected from a large number of people in a short period of time
and in a relatively cost effective way.
2. The questionnaire can be carried out by the researcher or by any number of people with limited affect
to its validity and reliability and this would be easier for the researcher.
3. The results of the questionnaires can usually be quickly and easily quantified by either a researcher or
through the use of a software package such as Survey Monkey and from this they can be transformed
perhaps into charts or conclusions that can be presented on the blog.
Here are my results (show my questionnaire behind me on the green screen).
What did you learn about your products? What did you learn about your strengths? What did you
learn about your weaknesses? What did you learn about the way you did things? Through the
audience feedback?
Before I will discuss my audiences feedback I will briefly go over some of the key approach methods
that were advised by fellow pupils and teachers on how to present my audiences feedback. For example
I was shown many different ways of how to demonstrate adventurous and creative media formats such
as Survey Monkey, Interviews, social networking sites, questionnaires, word of mouth discussions and
others. By using a collective range of media formats allowed to target many potential people who I
would consider to be my demographic. For instance if I know someone is quite keen and largely active
on Face book then ideally I would ask for feedback on this media format. Likewise is an individual is a
visual learner then perhaps simply watch our short film would provide me with sufficient feedback.
Firstly look at the survey monkey results which predominantly display excellent, strong feedback but
most importantly it is consistent. Looking at the first question shows 100% of the feedback could clearly
identify the genre in the film which was of course horror/ this led to the next question of discussing the
concept of was the film realistic and once again due to the range of camera shots and angles as well as
the acting the feedback replied in a positive 100% yes. Likewise the answers are consistent throughout
from the rate of the film being in the 9 and 10s out of 10 to the audience opinion of finding the film
scary. Adding to this I did as what genre could be identified and again the answers were relatable such
as the sense of sympathy to the main 3 characters, the rise of emotions as the film reaches its dilemma,
the scary, trembling voice, the diegetic and non diegetic sounds, the use of setting in the wood (which is
familiar), the ideology of being the characters shoes, the colours and design layouts of the ancillary tasks
and the uses of correct clothing (after all it is a DOFE expedition).Similarly this was consistently
portrayed thoroughly through the interviews, discussions and social networking sites.
What did you learn from the feedback at the premiere night and how did you use it to inform you on
the review?
I believe feedback from the audience who watched the film was constructive as we gave them the
option in the questionnaire to discuss two main things:
1. What was good about the film?
2. What could be improved?
Therefore if someone said the narrative was good and the audio needed to be improved then we would
improve the audio and make this our priority so it would improve the overall film. Also this would help
us in the review as we would comment on how the audio was a main weakness and how the narrative
structure was good. This would give us a real understanding of the film through the review.
