The
‘What
Is’
 Why?

Lack
of
interest
among
youth
for
sports
 No
future
prospects,
lack
of
options
for
other

besides
cricket
 sports

Lack
of
infrastructural
support
for
other
 No
funding
for
governing
bodies,
Mishandled

sports
 management

Lack
of
encouragement
from
parents/ Parents
see
no
prospects
for
their
children
with

peers
 such
sports
–
seen
as
a
lost
cause

No
corporate
participation
 Corporate
participation
only
comes
in
when
an

individual/sport
gains
national
recognition
–

such
as
Vijender
Singh
for
his
boxing
olympic

medal.
Thus,
a
strong
emotional
connect
with

the
populace
needs
to
be
established
to
make

corporates
willing
shareholders.

  CitySport
Universities

  Many
cities
in
India
are
de‐facto
centres
with
strong

support
bases
for
certain
sports

  These
cities
retain
individuals
with
special
skills
in
these

sports,
and
strong
support
bases

  Some
examples
include
–

  Kolkata
–
Football

  Kerala
–
Athletics

  Punjab
–
Hockey

  Northeastern
States

‐
Weightlifting,
Other
Athletics

  The
idea
revolves
around
making
other
sports
viable
and
strong
career

options
for
individuals

  This
would
take
care
of
multiple
problems
plaguing
the
sports
establishment
in

the
country

  The
idea
is
for
establishment
of
CitySport
–
branded
universities/
institutes
catering
exclusively
to
these
sports
with
strong
centres
of

influence
in
certain
cities.

  The
sport
universities
can
be
established
through
either
one
of
–

  Government
Sanction
–
A
viable
option,
since
most
sporting
organizations
get

significant
funds
for
sport
development.
However,
such
sanctions
are
time

consuming
and
often
get
caught
up
in
bureaucratic
mire

  PPP

‐
The
Public
Private
Partnership
model
works
well
because
this
model

ensures
both
sufficient
resources
as
well
as
brings
the
execution
skills
of

private
enterprise
into
play.

  The
current
proposed
model
is
as
follows
–

  Government
support
is
given
through
sanction
of
land/
leasing
of
land
for
the
institutes.

  Private
enterprises
that
may
be
interested
would
be

sporting
goods
firms
such
as
Puma,
Nike,
Reebok
etc.

  The
development
of
other
sports
in
the
nation
would

lead
to
significant
growth
in
the
sporting
goods

demand
in
the
country

  Thus,
there
is
incentive
for
these
organizations
to

support
this
activity
in
the
country

provide

as
well
as
quality
infrastructure

  Open
applications
invited
from
across
the
country
for
admissions
to
the
elite
sporting

institutions

  Develop
the

on
the
lines
of
the
academic

of
excellence
(IITs,

etc.)

  Ask
for

of

  Possible

model
–
ask

to
scout
schooling
facilities
across
India
for
talent

  Offer
scholarships
to
promising
youth

  Organize
trials
for
youth
wishing
to
get
admissions

WHAT
WILL
THIS
DO
TO
ENCOURAGE
PARENTS/PEERS/YOUTH?

The
promise
of
a
guaranteed
career
path
as
well
as
an
option

to
work
with
the
best
talents

in
the
sport
will
encourage
buy
in
from
parents.
Also,
sport
can
grow
to
become
a
viable

career
option,
which
parents
would
be
willing
to
encourage
akin
to
engineering/other

professional
options.

While
initially,
each
University
can
specialize
in
one
sport,
inter
disciplinary
sporting

facilities
can
eventually
be
brought
in,
creating
a
marquee
brand
like
the
IITs/IIMs

This
model
of
university
sport
is
utilized
effectively
on
a
limited
scale
in
countries
such
as

the
US
and
China

  After
inducting
talent,
the
scheme
needs
to
ensure
that
career
opportunities
exist

for
university
students

  For
this
purpose,
parallel
career
paths
can
be
created
within
the
university
setup
