Introduction:
Packages Limited was established in 1957 as a joint venture between the Ali Group of Pakistan
and Akerlund & Reusing of Sweden, to convert paper and paperboard into packaging for
consumer industry.
Over the years, the Company continued to enhance its facilities to meet the growing demand of
packaging products. Packages commissioned its own paper mill in 1968 having production
capacity of 24,000 tons of paper and paperboard. With growing demand the capacity was
increased periodically and in January 2003 was nearly 100,000 tones per year.

Since 1982, Packages Limited has a joint venture with Tetra Pak International in Tetra Pak
Pakistan limited to manufacture paperboard for liquid food packaging and to market Tetra Pak
packaging equipment. In 1993, a joint venture agreement was signed with Mitsubishi
Corporation of Japan for the manufacture of Polypropylene films at the Industrial Estate in
Hatter, NWFP. This project, Tri-Pack Films Limited, commenced production in June, 1995.
In July, 1994, Coates Lorilleux Pakistan Limited, in which Packages limited, has 55%
ownership, commenced production and sale of printing inks. In 1996, a joint venture agreement
was signed with Print care (Ceylon) Limited for the production of flexible packaging materials in
Sri Lanka. This project Packages Lanka Pvt. Ltd. commenced production in 1998.
In 1999-2000 Packages Limited has
successfully completed the expansion of the
flexible packaging line by installation of new
rotogravure printing machine and the expansion
of the carton line. In addition a new flexor
graphic printing machine was also installed in
flexible packaging line in 2001.

Problems which the organization was facing before
implementation of its Information System:

Packages cant have a single system to support all the companywide processes,
and rely on several small and different systems.
Packages were Lack of single applications architecture with limited interfaces.
Lack of Strategic Planning was there and we cant forecast our sales and
production over the time period in more convenient way.
Auditing was also a big problem because the applications were scattered.
Personal management was also an issue before SAP implementation.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
Packages limited management information system:
Information systems are implemented within packages limited for the purpose of improving the
effectiveness and efficiency of organization. Capabilities of the information system and
characteristics of the packages, its work systems, its people, and its development and
implementation methodologies together determine the extent to which that purpose is achieved.
The information system implemented in Packages Limited is SAP (System Applications &
Product) that provides a very high level of integration among its individual applications which
guarantee consistency of data throughout the system and the company itself. SAP is use to
handle all of the business management tasks of a company.
Before setting up their own Computer System, Packages Limited hired computer services. But
when work grew and requirements increased, Packages Limited has set up their own computer
system. Now all the computer related work of all the departments is performed in this section.
MIS Manager is the head of this department and he is answerable to the General Manager. Its
responsibility is look after the data processing and making software for Packages Limited. There
are two senior system analysts, nine data entry operators, four computer operators and one
supervisor. System Department almost helps the whole organization because almost every
department is to some extent computerized. The major job of this section is to assist the
Accounting department and thats why it is situated adjacent to the Accounting department. At
this time, Packages Limited uses the following systems efficiently:

Accounting System Data warehouses
Inventory Control System Enterprise resource planning
Human Resource Management System Enterprise systems
Production Incentive System Expert systems
Production Planning System Geographic information system
Job Casting System Global information system
Office Automation

MIS Department works in collaboration with SYSTEMS LIMITED which maintains the all
accounting data of Packages Limited. This job is done through parallel that is the programmers at
Packages Limited can also use the facilities of SYSTEMS LIMITED simultaneously.
The Computer Department of Packages Limited mostly develops programs in Language. This
department has done a lot of programming for the organization. At this time all systems, which
are use in the System Department, is developed by its own staff.

They do not take enough time to develop a new system.
After developing the system they debugged and checked
again in order to remove any problem if it exists in the
real situation. Earlier this section was using 8088 and
80286computers but now they have become obsolete due
to the rapid development in computer technology. They
are using MULTI-USER DECSTATION 5000/125.
Now packages ltd again going to update system
department by purchasing the advance technology SAP under consideration to overcome the
problems
Some particular examples are the payment of invoices, the management of production resources
and the control of financial accounts, management of employees.

continues to explore and develop usage of new fibers, films, chemicals, adhesives, coatings and
resins. With well-equipped laboratories and research resources at its disposal, Packages is a
happening place in the area of research.
