Depression Treatment

Depression is something that thousands of people have and many try to cope with without telling

anyone in hopes that it will go away. However, it is not as simple as that. It affects the entire

body and can be life changing. A person with depression may experience some or all of these

symptoms of depression; changes in thinking, behavior, feelings, and physical well being. With

the proper treatment many can get back to living the life they once knew.

Rachel Upjohn Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences; Chair, Department of

Psychiatry; Senior Research Scientist, Mental Health Research Institute; and Director, The

University of Michigan Depression Center, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Scope

This book touches on mortality rates from suicides, the personal consequences, cost, treatment

strategies, lifetime impact, and potential new treatments

Compare

This book can be compared to the scholarly article for the outcome of treatment and overcoming

a relapse. Focusing and exhausting one’s ability to live in the everyday world without

depression is a very difficult process when there is no help or hope. Yet, in both circumstances

the authors have sought out other causes to the depression and any other illnesses that would be

aiding it.

Opinion

While this book does offer a great deal of research on depression it also offers further

information on its affects to the human body. It goes on to describe different treatment options

that can be offered to an individual when other sources have been exhausted. However, some

options can be life threatening and should be thought out with great care before proceeding.

Steven Hollon, Michael Thase, and John Markowitz. "Treatment and Prevention of

Depression." Psychological Science in the Public Interest3.2 (2002): 39-77.

Authority

Hollon’s primary interest lies in the etiology and treatment of depression in adults. His work

extends from basic psychopathology to prevention and treatment. He is particularly interested in

the relative contribution of cognitive and biological processes to depression, and how the relative

efficacies of psychosocial versus pharmacological interventions compare. A current interest is

the prevention of depression, both with respect to its initial onset and subsequent recurrence

following successful treatment. Dr. Thase is an expert in assessment and treatment of mood

disorders, with particular interest in major depressive disorders, long-term treatment and

combination therapy. His current PI work includes a study of cognitive therapy for depression

treatment, a multi-site investigation of psychotherapy and medication in addressing major

depression, and a placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial on the use of continuation-phase

cognitive therapy and fluoxetine for major depressive disorder. Dr. Markowitz conducts

research on psychotherapy and medication as treatments for depression, posttraumatic stress

disorder, and borderline personality disorder. He teaches and supervises interpersonal

psychotherapy (IPT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), supportive psychotherapy, and

pharmacotherapy.

Scope

Explains that depression is one of the most common and debilitating psychiatric disorders and

that it can lead to suicide. Medications that have been used to help prevent depression still have

an uncertainty. Psychotherapy seems to be more helpful in social interaction vs. medication

although it takes longer to take effect. It mentions a few others types of possible ways in

preventing depression as well.

Compare

This is being compared to Treatment of Recurrent Depression shows that both have the

understanding of suicide coming into play due to depression and possible ways to alleviate this

different forms of treatment.

Opinion

It focuses on depression and its ability to debilitate people and the fatal flaws that it has rendered.

There is a focus on prevention of depression and the remission for those that have been through

it. Further reading describes the ability to study a patient for further disorder that may be the

cause of depression so that the prognosis can be fully utilized

Scope

There were two studies that were done to test patient’s reactions for depression. One was by

injection of a powerful anesthetic drug. The other was with antidepressant drugs which can

cause a patient to commit suicide. Going on to explain the risks involved in both types of

procedures.

Compare

Looking at the film it offers no mercy of not knowing that there are suicide potentials that are

very dangerous in the youth by taking depressant medication.

Opinion

The many percentages that are illustrated in this article explain many things involved in both

study groups. The Food and Drug Administration began to require proper labeling of drugs

letting people know of the suicide risks.
