Modal Extraction with Linearized Foundation Seminar
Topic A. File Structure and Layout
Overview - Seastate information is
specified separately from the
model file. This will
eliminate the need for
having multiple model files
throughout the course of the
analysis.
Notes:
Topic B. Determine Load Cases
used for Linearization
Overview - Before linearizing the
foundation, the loading to be
used must be determined.
Step 1. Add load cases to a
Seastate input file if
necessary.
Step 2. Specify load case options in
Seastate input file.
Loading used to create the linearized
foundation depends on the type analysis
using the foundation SE.
Earthquake analyses may require
adding a combination containing lateral
G force loading in addition to vertical
dead load. Fatigue analyses may
require adding a small wave in the X
and Y directions to represent the center
of damage of the scatter diagram.
Include any dummy load cases added
for the foundation.

Topic C. Foundation Super Element
Overview - The PSI program is used to
create a linearized super
element representing the
foundation. This super
element will replace pile
stubs, dummy piles or
springs required in past
analyses.
Step 1. Add foundation super
element input to the PSI
input file using the PILSUP
line.
Step 2. Add any load case options
in PSI input file.
Step 3. Determine which piles
require unique stiffness.
Step 4. Specify soil properties.
Notes:
Use up to two superelments may be
created. Use one PILSUP line for each
supelement. Use the AVG option if the
superelement is to created using the
average of displacements from each
pile in the pile group. Use the MAX
option if the maximum displacements of
any pile in the pile group is to be used.
If dummy load cases are used for SE,
may want to exclude them form pile
capacity and code check.
One SE is created for each pile group.
If a pile requires a unique stiffness, it
should be placed in its own pile group.
May require using cyclic data for some
analyses.

Topic D. Dynamic Characteristics
Overview - Dynpac is used to create
mode shape and mass files
required for subsequent
dynamic analyses.
Step 1. Specify retained or master
degrees of freedom in the
model if they are not already
done.
Step 2. Create Seastate input file
used for hydrodynamic
modeling only.
Step 3. Specify load cases to be
converted to mass in
addition to load case factors
in the Seastate input file.
Step 4. Create Dynpac input file.
Step 5. Create runfile.
Step 6. Check mode shapes and
periods.
Notes:
PSI ignores fixities designated with 2'.
Use FILE J option so that only loads in
model are considered. Note: Seastate
option is overridden by Executive.
Load cases may be factored using the
LCFAC line with the DY option.
Use SA-Z option if user-defined loads
are to be converted to mass.
If importing a super element, specify
import option in Analysis options tab or
in model file. Be sure to select the
correct super element file.
