Welcome back friendsIts great to see you again! I know, we cant really see you right now as you ready through these pages but you are definitely seeing us and we surely thank you for picking up a copy (or getting one in your mailbox, for all of our home subscribers). This month we turn our focus to an epic historical event that is held in Washington D.C. every Memorial Day weekendROLLING THUNDER. Many of you who have been with us over the years, know that Im a very patriotic person in which I try to bring this patriotism to the magazine by promoting support for our military and am passionate about buying Made in the U.S.A. products. Im not sure if my being born on the 4th of July has anything to do with it, but the U.S. military and being a passionate patriot seems to run in my blood. I followed the footsteps of my parents and grandfather as they served on active duty back in WWII.My mom was U.S. Navy Yeoman, my dad was enlisted in the Air Force along with my grandfather who was a Warrant Officer. I proudly served on active duty in the U.S. Navy for 13 years. Ask anyone who has served in any branch of the military & I could bet that they have lots of great stories to tell and are passionate about their time served. Ask if they had to do it all over againchances are they wouldnt change a thing, except maybe they may have stayed in longer. God knows where I would be today without having experienced my time in the service. I am so proud of my little brother Nick, who came in the Navy after I did & is now getting ready to retire with 30 years of servicemy little brother, the Master Chiefwho-da-thunk-it?...way to go little bro. My oldest son Curtis is a 1st Class in the Navy with over 14 years of active duty & is currently on a 3 year tour with the U.S. Navys Blue Angels as a team memberI couldnt be prouder. Curtis has served time in Iraq and also had the unique opportunity and honor to be a part of JPAC (Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command) to Viet Nam to help look for remains of POWs. It was a life changing event that he will never forget. I share all of this with you in hopes that you understand how things come full circle when it comes to supporting causes and the passion that is behind those causes that keep them alive. There is a special Proud To Be An American section this month about the history of ROLLING THUNDER & how it all got started. The story comes directly from the founder himself, Ray F. Manzo. Please take the time to read it & if you are participating in Rolling Thunder this year, I hope that the letters and information provide you with a greater understanding and meaning of what its all about. We participate in rides and events all of the time but do you really know what the cause is all about or is it just a ride to you?...check it out and please share with us your stories and pictures of Rolling Thunder or any events that you participate in. Thanks for being here with us again have an awesome month of May & we will see you again next timeStay safe! Happy Trails,

Kelly

Visit the Patriot Harley-Davidson website for open house details. Of course the most visible event is on Sunday, May 25th, at Patriot H-D when we honor our heroes and ride to Rolling Thunder. The weekend finale is a Chapter ride in the Falls Church Memorial Day Parade. For an account of Ride of the Patriots, please read this Patriot H-D Blog on the Ceremony and Ride. This year is the 27th Rolling Thunder. The event grows larger every year and is now the largest single-day motorcycle event in the world. Rolling Thunder not only honors and remembers those who fought in Vietnam, but also honors the servicemen and women in uniform. The Armed Forces Color Guard who serve our nation, protecting and defending our liberty and democracy. The events of September 11, 2001 made all citizens aware of how precious our liberty is and grateful for the sacrifices of those in military service who defend our freedoms. Since 9/11 we have gained a renewed awareness of the tremendous job first responders do to keep us safe and out of harms way. Firefighters and Law Enforcement Officers are the unsung heroes here at home. Operation Liberty in Afghanistan and the vigilance of those defending Homeland Security remind us daily of the courage and sacrifice of our military. The Ride of the Patriots and Rolling Thunder especially honors those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and defend our freedoms and our nationLEST WE FORGET. Bikers participation in Rolling Thunder began primarily with Vietnam War veterans having a special focus on MIAs. The rider group has now grown to include over 400,000 riders from across the USA who participate for many personal reasons, though primarily to honor all veterans. Spectators join in the event all along the route to the Pentagon and on the parade route thru Washington, DC to pay tribute and to honor our military heroes on this solemn occasion. Each year over 3,500 bikes from the local area as well as from points across the USA and Canada joined us for the Ride of the Patriots. The bikers assemble in an orderly manner eastbound along Fairfax Boulevard (Lee Highway) starting at Patriot Harley-Davidson and then with the help of Police motor squad units from Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax and Arlington County are escorted safely to the Pentagon staging area to join 400,000 other bikers for Rolling Thunder. Community Parade: The Ride of the Patriots to Rolling Thunder on Sunday (see the schedule) begins with a parade down Fairfax Boulevard and an Opening Ceremony that brings the community and the bikers together to recognize the significance of this day. City leaders, State and Federal Delegates, the Fairfax High School Band, Fairfax City and County Fire and Police units, the Northern Virginia Firefighters Emerald Society Pipe Band, the American Legion, Honor Guards, etc. have active parts in the event on Sunday morning. Spectators from the community line Fairfax Boulevard to recognize the riders and honor this Memorial Day weekend. The Ride of the Patriots takes the message of remembrance and honor for those who gave the most for our country and our freedoms from the City of Fairfax and Fairfax County citizens on to join with many others from the USA and Canada at Rolling Thunder and we are proud to do so. Please join us. You will never forget. Patriot Harley-Davidson 9739 Fairfax Blvd Fairfax, VA 22031. May 24th Rat Roast Harbinger, NC Swap Meet and Car, Truck & Motorcycle Event! PROUD TO BE
I received a package back in September 2012, from someone who I have never met in person before but because of my involvement with Rolling Thunder through my magazine for so many years, after reading the letter and other contents, I knew that I had received a piece of history that not many folks knew the true depth of passion that was behind it all. This package came from the Founder of Rolling Thunder, Ray F. Manzo. I felt so honored that Mr. Manzo had taken the time to hand write this incredible letter, sharing his deepest emotions about Rolling Thunder, sharing how it all got started with THE HUMBLE BEGINNING along with other letters that I hope you will take the time to read and sharing old newspaper clippings and photographs along with a Rolling Thunder XXV patch & patriotic emblem. As I read his letters and looked at the pictures and article, goose bumps covered me and I was overwhelmed with patriotic emotions, like I have never felt before. There I sat with a big lump in my throat looking at what I felt to be somewhat of a time capsule and an incredible piece of historythis is how Rolling Thunder all got started and Ray had entrusted these precious items into my hands, not just for me, but for me to share all of this with you. I cannot even begin to tell you what an extreme honor it is to share with all of you, the letter that he wrote and the contents of the package that I had received from him.

Many thanks to our friend Patrick Hughes, Rolling Thunders National Photographer, who for years has generously shared his incredible photography of Rolling Thunder with our magazine, Thunder Roads Virginia and thank you for passing along copies of our magazine to Mr. Manzo so that he would know that we also support the incredible event that he founded 27 years agoROLLING THUNDER. To Ray F. Manzo I cant thank you enough for taking the time to share this piece of history with me so that I can share it with our readers, fellow riders and our motorcycle communities. I am deeply moved and feel extremely honored that you would bestow such precious pieces of Rolling Thunder history into my hands. Thank you so much for your service to our country and founding The Most Powerful Movement In History For The Men and Women Who Are Willing to Defend Which Most People Take For Granted and that is Freedom. Great Places To Ride

Welcome to Tazewell County, Virginia It has been said that mountains have a way of drawing you into a slower pace and heightens your senses. Nestled in the majestic Appalachian mountains of southwestern Virginia, Tazewell County is home to spectacular mountain views, diverse history and exciting outdoor recreational opportunities. Start your journey through Tazewell County at the Visitors Center. The Visitors Center is an historic cottage located at 200 Sanders Lane in Bluefield, Virginia, where listings of local events, festivals, and points of interest as well as information on attractions, lodging, restaurants, ATM machines, churches, repair shops, etc. can be found. Maps and brochures are available at the center to assist you as you chart your course through the area. Historically, the diversity of Tazewell County was based on the many ethnic groups who came to the region to find work during the industrialization of the nation. Now, the diversity is based on the variety of experiences you can enjoy. If youre looking for a slower pace, Tazewell County has it or if youre looking for an exhilarating, heart-throbbing experience, youre in the right place. Touted as Four Seasons Country, Tazewell County has exquisite foliage and is a natural habitat for an abundance of birds, wildlife and rare fresh water species. The forest resonates with natures musical ensemble of songbirds while white-tail deer, wild turkey, and ruffed grouse occasionally make an appearance. Six of eight designated points on the Mountain Heritage Loop of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail are located in Tazewell County and include Sandy Head Ostrich, Burkes Garden, Lincolnshire Park/Lake, Cavitts Creek/Lake Jack Witten, Historic Crab Orchard Museum, and The Cove. The Clinch River basin which is located at the headwaters of Tazewell County has been declared by the Nature Conservancy as one of only twenty Last Great Places in the world (1990). The worlds largest collection of rare and endangered fresh water species is located here. Each year thousands of visitors experience the unparalleled beauty of Burkes Garden, a National Historic Rural District which is the highest valley in Virginia at an elevation of 3,086 feet. Sometimes referred to as Gods Thumbprint, Burkes Garden is home to the Varmint Run, one of Virginias smaller half marathon events where athletes can test their mettle around the loop course through the valley between two mountains. Numerous visitors also tour the Garden as a side trip from the Appalachian Trail, or the Heart of Appalachia Bike Route.

The Town of Pocahontas is the gateway of the Virginia Coal Heritage Trail and has numerous historical sites including the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine , a Registered National Historic Landmark, and the Pocahontas Cemetery designated a Virginia Historic Site. The Coal Heritage Museum in Pocahontas recounts the story of how King Coal fueled Americas industrial revolution. Historic Crab Orchard Museum gives a comprehensive overview of Southwest Virginia history in its galleries and living history events. The museum hosts annual events such as the Skirmish at Jeffersonville Civil War Reenactment and the Tazewell County Old Time & Bluegrass Fiddlers Convention In addition to quality museums depicting the heritage of Tazewell County, tourists will find landmarks such as the Coal Miners Memorial of the Commonwealth located in Richlands, murals, unusual brick sculptures, an abundance of historic homes, churches, and business facilities gracing the landscape throughout the towns and county. Visitors are invited to drive along the newly created trails such as the Virginia Coal Heritage Trail which depicts the history of industrialization in the region. Drive the Clinch River Artisan Trail to discover the numerous artisans and, unique restaurants throughout the counties of Tazewell and Russell. Youll also want to hear the traditional mountain music along The Crooked Road trail. Rev up the pace if youre really feeling adventurous, and check out the Back of the Dragon on Route 16 in your sports car or on your motorcycle where you will discover 32 miles of knee-draggin excitement on 15 mile per hour curves. In addition, Pocahontas ATV Trails are being developed for the off-road vehicle enthusiast. So keep checking our website at www.visittazewellcounty.org or call 1.800.588.9401 for updates . U.N. CALLS FOR UNIVERSAL HELMET LAWS WORLDWIDE The United Nations has approved a resolution on road safety that, in part, calls for member nations to enact mandatory helmet laws. Cosponsored by United States ambassador Suzanne Powers, the non-binding resolution also calls for laws against distracted driving (such as banning inappropriate cell phone use and texting while driving) and supporting global harmonization of vehicle regulations (which could include anti-tampering measures to prevent customizing and equipment modifications). The U.N. General Assembly voted to approve the Improving Global Road Safety resolution on April 10, 2014 to encourage Member States that have not yet done so to consider enacting comprehensive legislation on key risk factors for road traffic injuries, includingthe nonuse of helmets... When motorcyclists encounter devices that fail to notice their presence, they will be allowed to proceed through the light with due caution after one complete cycle. nWeight-bearing traffic signal mechanisms were developed in the 1920s, but have mostly been phased out over the years in favor of induction loop signals which are buried in the road and triggered by ferrous metal. Many of the newer detection devices are cameras that control traffic lights based on sight or timing. There was no safe and legal way to get through until this legislation passed, Larry Walker, Government Relations Specialist for the Washington Road Riders Association, told the Oregonian newspaper. Fourteen other states have passed similar legislation. Senate Bill 5141 takes effect June 12.

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, the Government has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 60 years of age and above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early). Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers). A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Government deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance). Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government. Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much CHIT (Challenged High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided themselves on the amount of CHIT they give our citizens. Should you feel that you do not receive enough CHIT, please bring this to the attention of your MP, who has been trained to give you all the CHIT you can personally handle. Sincerely & Dutifully, The Committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives aka (E.V.I.L.) Back on January 1st, a group of Nashville, Tennessee bikers were riding down Highway 49 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Cumberland River Bridge. So, naturally, they stopped. Lion Head; their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of gawkers, past the State Trooper who was trying to talk her down off the railing, and says, Hey Baby.....whatcha doin up there on that railin? She says tearfully, Im going to jump and commit suicide! (even though the fall would damn sure sting when she hit the water, it would not kill her). While Lion Head didnt want to appear sensitive, he also didnt want to miss this be-a-legend opportunity either so he asked .....Well, before you jump, Sugar-Britches... why dont you give ole Lion Head here your best last kiss? So, with no hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that ... and it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another even better one. After they breathlessly finished, Lion Head gets a big thumbs-up approval from his biker-buddies, the onlookers, and even the State Trooper, and then says, Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had, Doll-Face! Thats a real talent youre wasting, Sugar Britches. You could be famous if you rode with me. Well call you the Lioness. Why the hell are you committing suicide? My lame-ass parents dont like me dressing up like a girl. * Its still unclear today whether Sugar Britches jumped or was slightly pushed! Of all the blonde jokes, this one has to be one of the best -- because it makes football make sense! A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their teams bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked it. Oh, I really liked it, she replied, especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldnt understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents. Dumbfounded, her boyfriend asked, What do you mean? Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming was...........Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback! Im like...Helloooooo? Its only 25 cents !!

Too many people today feel that their life is headed toward a crash. Their life feels like two trains headed directly toward each other and there is really nothing they can do to stop it from happening. For them, a crash seems inevitable. The crash may be a personality crash in a marriage or at work. The crash may be a financial crash or an employment crash. Whatever it is, for them, life seems to have come unglued and untracked. They feel as if they are partly on track and partly off track. The final decision of where they will end up is yet to be decided. Could that be how you feel today? Maybe you feel as if you have gotten off track. Maybe you feel that something is missing in your life and you just dont know what it is. Maybe you feel like you are about to crash. Let me ask you, is there a way out? Is there any hope? Are there any answers? Is there any way to stop the crash before it happens? I want you to read this carefully, there is hope! There is an answer. There is a way out. A crash in your life does not have to happen. Where do we find that answer? Where do we turn? How do we stop the crash? Now, while there is an answer, we will not discover the hope or answer by reading our horoscope. We will not find the answer by calling a psychic hotline. We will not find our hope by consulting a fortune cookie or by picking up a self-help book at the bookstore. So, if the answers are not found in those places, where are the answers to be found? Simple. The answers to lifes questions are found in Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that Jesus came to earth, sent by God our Heavenly Father, so that we might experience true life. Jesus came so that we could know true happiness, true peace, true joy, and true fulfillment. Jesus came so that we could genuinely know God and have a personal relationship with Him. Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you. And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. So Jesus answered and said to him, What do you want Me to do for you? The blind man said to Him, Rabboni, that I may receive my sight. Then Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road (Mark 10:46-52). Now, what can we learn from Bartimaeus? What can we learn from him that will help us get plugged in to the plan that God has for our life? How can we move beyond merely Surviving and start Thriving? I want to share with you three ways. Survive; to remain alive: to continue to exist Thrive; to grow vigorously: to gain in wealth or possessions: to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances

From Surviving to Thriving

First, to move from surviving to thriving, we must learn to CAPITALIZE ON THE OPPORTUNITIES GOD PROVIDES FOR US. Bartimaeus did just that. Once Bartimaeus discovered that Jesus was close to him, he shouted out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. Second, to move from Surviving to Thriving, we must learn to MINIMIZE THE NEGATIVE VOICES THAT CLATTER AROUND US. Now, notice the crowds reaction when Bartimaeus cried out for help. Mark said, Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet. Third, if we are to move from striving to thriving, we must learn to EXERCISE THE FAITH AVAILABLE TO US. Notice, Bartimaeus boldness grabbed Jesus attention. His boldness and enthusiasm were almost impossible to miss. The reason that Jesus healed Bartimaeus was not because of his boldness, but because of his faith. It was Bartimaeus faith that triggered Jesus healing power. Jesus said to Bartimaeus, Go, your faith has healed you. You can go from just Surviving to Thriving today. The choice is yours to make!

Second Annual Bikes on the Border

The Second Annual Bikes on the Border was held March 21st and 22nd in Kings Mountain North Carolina. We had 67 registrations, up 63% from last year. The conference was an opportunity for motorcyclists from the Carolinas and Virginia to gather and discuss topics of importance to motorcyclists and to motorcycle rights organizations. Attendees arrived Friday March 21st and enjoyed fellowship over a few beverages at the hospitality room. The following day, the conference was held at the H. Lawrence Patrick Conference Center in Kings Mountain, NC. Topics covered included federal legislation affecting motorcyclists, a panel discussion on effective lobbying on both the state and federal level, insurance law and how it affects motorcyclists, and a presentation on dealing with toxic members in your motorcycle rights organization. There was also a roundtable discussion on issues of importance to motorcyclists in each state in attendance. Presenters included Dennis Welborne with ABATE of South Carolina, Cindy Hodges with CBA/ABATE of North Carolina, John Pierce with ABATE of Oklahoma, Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Public Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), as well as members of Tom McGraths Motorcycle Law Group. The conference concluded with a banquet featuring a silent auction as well as a 50/50 raffle with the proceeds of both going to the MRF. The auction and raffle raised $827.00 for the MRF. Given the feedback we received from attendees a Third Annual Bikes on the Border is inevitable. We are looking forward to announcing the details in the future. Good To Know
GOT WASPS?...MAKE A NATURAL WASP SPRAY (no insecticides) Use a good amount of dishwashing liquid in a hose-end sprayer, about 1/4 cup. Get the water going until the suds begin. Blast the nest from as far away as you can be (bee? ha!) while still maintaining a powerful spray. Do the deed in the evening (dusk or later) after all the wasps have come home for the night. And wear long pants and sleeves, just in caseespecially if you have low water pressure. The soapy water works, by the way, because insects of all kinds wear their skeletons on the outside. The cohesive property of water generally prevents the water from entering their exoskeleton, but soap breaks the surface tension of water. Soapy water ultimately drowns bees, wasps, hornets (and ants, if youre battling them in the house). At this point in history, were in a bit of a honeybee crisis theyre dying in droves and puzzling scientists and beekeepers, and the state of our food supply is at risk. Wasps can also pollinate and even kill pesky insects in your garden, so if their hive isnt in a dangerous location, leave them alone, too. No bees, no pollination, no food.

BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER

Meaning: Family comes before everything else
History: In ancient Middle Eastern culture, blood rituals between men symbolized bonds that were far greater than those of family. The saying also has to do with blood brothers, because warriors who symbolically shared the blood they shed in battle together were said to have stronger bonds than biological brothers.

Pleazr & Jawz

Bucket List Ride of a Lifetime!

by Rebel Ron

ve been riding street bikes around Franklin since 1976 & Ive been working at S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia for 12 years along with doing business with the 40 year old bike shop since 1981. Ive seen & done many wild things in this time period along with meeting some fascinating people. Let me tell you about two of them. Riders in the Middle Tenn. area may recognize these two Chapel Hill residents who both ride with the orange colors of the Weasles motorcycle group, aka a Drinking Club. Here are Pleazr & Jawz Wiedel, two people who have lived the dream in 2013. That dream being a 19,000 mile motorcycle ride crisscrossing America from May 1st to Labor Day. Early last year Jawz lost his job because of downsizing & soon after his wife was laid off from her job. After careful consideration & several adult beverages they decided to make that two wheeling trip they had dreamed of that many of us have on our Bucket List. While enjoying the beaches of Panama City they made the decision to go for it. They had no certain itinerary, no deadlines, some vague plans, & family/friends all across America they had not seen in a while. They traveled with their comfortable & well accessorized Bunkhouse Camper with a faithful GPS along with the determination to travel America away from the Interstates. (Less than 3K

miles of this trip were on Interstates.) They toured some War Between The States battlefields on the way out of Tenn. & Miss., visited Pleazrs Mom in Ft. Smith, Ark., attended a Weasel party in the Ozarks, & cruised by their sons home in Kansas City. They would ride further on to see too many places to list here but they made it to the Grand Canyon, saw the Worlds Largest Ball of Twine, climbed Pikes Peak, partied at the Hollister Bike Rally, another Weasel party in Portland, crossed the Rocky Mountains a couple of times, went to Harleys 110 anniversary, & more in 24 states before heading to Sturgis Bike rally. (I asked them what was the best place they visited & both answered Crater Lake, OR. Very beautiful there! ) During this months long bike ride they camped out 3/4 of the time along with staying with friends & checking in motels too. They had no problems with either of the Harleys & only needed maintenance & tires. Incredibly they

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 40

were only rained on 3 times & snowed on once on this long journey. The most miles they rode in one day was 740. Some of the more exciting things they had to deal with in their path were mud slides, major fires, a plane crash, wild animals, & some rough back roads. But the thing to remember is that they lived the dream so many of us riders have longed to do. Cruise the back roads of America like the Sportster riding Bronson from that old TV series. More importantly the Wiedels learned what Freedom is truly about in our country. It is sacred. Finally, Jawz must be living right because when he finally came home a company from Jacksboro, Tenn. that makes travel trailers for bikes was looking for him about a job. He is now the new Product Development Manager at Bushtech Bunkhouse. Yall ride safe & often!

While eating dark chocolate can lead to the health benefits described below, remember that chocolate is also high in fat. 1) Dark Chocolate is Good for Your Heart - Studies show that eating a small amount of dark chocolate two or three times each week can help lower your blood pressure. Dark chocolate improves blood flow and may help prevent the formation of blood clots. Eating dark chocolate may also prevent arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). 2) Dark Chocolate is Good for Your Brain - Dark chocolate increases blood flow to the brain as well as to the heart, so it can help improve cognitive function. Dark chocolate also helps reduce your risk of stroke. Dark chocolate also contains several chemical compounds that have a positive effect on your mood and cognitive health. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), the same chemical your brain creates when you feel like youre falling in love. PEA encourages your brain to release endorphins, so eating dark chocolate will make you feel happier. Dark chocolate also contains caffeine, a mild stimulant. However, dark chocolate contains much less caffeine than coffee. A 1.5 ounce bar of dark chocolate contains 27 mg of caffeine, compared to the 200 mg found in an eight ounce cup of coffee. 3) Dark Chocolate Helps Control Blood Sugar - Dark chocolate helps keep your blood vessels healthy and your circulation unimpaired to protect against type 2 diabetes. The flavonoids in dark chocolate also help reduce insulin resistance by helping your cells to function normally and regain the ability to use your bodys insulin efficiently. Dark chocolate also has a low glycemic index, meaning it wont cause huge spikes in blood sugar levels. 4) Dark Chocolate is Full of Antioxidants - Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants help free your body of free radicals, which

cause oxidative damage to cells. Free radicals are implicated in the aging process and may be a cause of cancer, so eating antioxidant rich foods like dark chocolate can protect you from many types of cancer and slow the signs of aging. 5) Dark Chocolate Contains Theobromine - Dark chocolate contains theobromine, which has been shown to harden tooth enamel. That means that dark chocolate, unlike most other sweets, lowers your risk of getting cavities if you practice proper dental hygiene. Theobromine is also a mild stimulant, though not as strong as caffeine. It can, however, help to suppress coughs. 6) Dark Chocolate is High in Vitamins and Minerals - Dark chocolate contains a number of vitamins and minerals that can support your health. Dark chocolate contains some of the following vitamins and minerals in high concentrations: Potassium, Copper, Magnesium & Iron. The copper and potassium in dark chocolate help prevent against stroke and cardiovascular ailments. The iron in chocolate protects against iron deficiency anemia, and the magnesium in chocolate helps prevent type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

In addition, motorcyclists can increase their safety by: Avoiding riding in poor weather conditions. Wearing brightly colored protective gear and a DOTcompliant helmet. Using turn signals for every turn or lane change, even if the rider thinks no one will see it. Combining hand signals and turn signals to draw more attention to themselves. Using reflective tape and stickers to increase visibility. Positioning themselves in the lane where they will be most visible to other drivers. Never driving while impaired or distracted. Help share in the responsibility of keeping all road users safe, and do your part by safely sharing the road.

In support of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, May 2014, Thunder Roads Virginia would like to remind motorists and motorcyclists to share the road and be extra alert to keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcycles are vehicles with the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle on the roadway. Motorists and bicyclists should perform visual checks for motorcyclists by checking mirrors and blind spots before they enter or exit a lane of traffic, and at intersections. In addition, pedestrians should also get into the habit of scanning for motorcyclists who might be hidden by other traffic. Safety is a mutual responsibility for motorists and motorcyclists alike. Drivers must be aware that a motorcycle, as one of the smallest of vehicles on the road, can be hiding in your vehicles blind spots. Always check blind spots, use mirrors and signal before changing lanes or making turns. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are much more vulnerable than a passenger vehicle occupant in the event of a crash. Motorcyclists should also remain alert to other drivers, never ride impaired or distracted and always wear a helmet and other protective gear. In order to help keep motorcyclists safe, we would like to offer the following tips: Remember, a motorcycle is a vehicle with all of the rights and privileges of any other motor vehicle. Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane widthnever try to share a lane. Perform a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or exiting a lane of traffic, and at intersections. Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. Dont be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle motorcycle signals are often not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed. Allow more following distance three or four sec onds when behind a motorcycle so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emer gency. Never tailgate. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars. Never drive while distracted.
