School: East Longmeadow High School Lesson #: 4 of 4 Facilities: Outdoor Multi-Purpose Turf Field Class Size: 24 Grade: 11 Unit/Theme: Football Generic Level: Utilization/Proficiency Equipment: 8 Cones, 8 Footballs, 8 Blue Pinnies, 8 Red Pinnies, 8 Green Pinnies, 1 Portable Whiteboard, 3 Football Play Templates, 2 Blank Pieces of Paper, and 3 Pencils. Focus of Lesson: Demonstrate Trick Plays for Offensive Efficiency in Football Gameplay
Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (NASPE #___; MA CF #___ ; Task/Activity #___) By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: (P) Utilize at least 3 trick plays in football gameplay during a round-robin tournament (NASPE #1; MA CF #2.17; Activity #s 1, 2, and 3). (C) Analyze the effect that trick plays in football can make on a teams success during gameplay by answering a series of informal questions with 100% accuracy at given points throughout the class period (NASPE #2; MA CF #2.19; Entire Lesson). (A) Follow all of the class rules by acting responsibly around other peers and teacher (NASPE #4; MA CF #2.26; Entire Lesson). Check each objective is it specific? Is it achievable? Is it developmentally appropriate? Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will: 1. Present students with different trick plays for football by demonstrating how they should be applied in order to complete the correct motions that correlate to the skills incorporated in them by the end of the allotted lesson time. 2. Issue students the necessary feedback on their trick play performance in football gameplay so that they can refine their execution accordingly. Special Considerations What are the safety concerns? What is unique about the students in this class? Students need to be sure to stay in their own personal space when implementing trick plays with the football. Proper attire for physical activity (no jewelry, wearing sneakers, etc.) will be enforced at the beginning of class. If learners get tired during games teacher needs to remind them to move to outside of the boundaries so they dont get injured. The students will also be made aware of any hazardous equipment for which the field presents.

Opening: Ss will walk into the gymnasium and cooperating T will take attendance, have them complete a football unit quiz, and order them to go into the locker room and change.
Transition: Ss will be told to walk out to the turf field where they will be made familiar with lesson focus for the day, stop/go signals, safety procedures, and behavior expectations. They will then be given 10 seconds to make a group of 3 with partners for whom they work well together with.
Instant Activity: With their partners, Ss will be asked to pick up one football from a designated pile already prearranged and find their own personal space within the boundaries indicated by the T to make a formation with one quarterback, receiver, and defender. Using the football, the groups will practice utilizing the various pass patterns for which they have been introduced to in the unit with the defender trying to prevent the quarterback from completing their pass to the receiver as a review from prior classes. Each person must switch to a different position after every play.
Demonstration: T will issue Ss with a very brief presentation for how to perform these actions by practicing them with 2 S volunteers, while reinforcing their skill cues for the actions used in order to complete these plays at the same time.
Transition: Ss will be told to jog with their footballs to a specific area expressed by the T outside the boundaries, place the equipment in a pile next to the T, and then form a semicircle across from the T.
Informing: The Ss will be made aware that for the last day of their unit that they will be taking part in a football tournament to determine which team will be the class champion. The T will then introduce to them that they will be learning about a few Opening Diagram: T T S S S S S S S S S S S S S S S S

different trick plays so that they can then merge them into their games in an effort to confuse the opposing teams defense so that they can move the ball down the field at a more efficient rate. The rationale behind these illusions will be explained to the Ss by the T stating how they can create major gains in yardage if applied correctly and at the right time because the defense will be off-balance in regards to what the offense will be doing. The T will then express to the Ss that a critical component to trick plays is to use them sparingly in a game because if they are continuously employed, the defense will begin to grow more aware of how they are ran, and, as a result, diminish the success that can be gained from them. The first trick plays for which will be interpreted to the Ss are known as the flea flicker and the modified reverse. The T will illustrate the formations and how they are ran to the class by using a whiteboard to show them where each player is supposed to move to on the field. Skill Cues (Trick Plays): Flea Flicker Play- 1. The quarterback hands ball off to halfback. 2. The halfback takes a few steps forward as if going to run the ball, stops, turns around, and tosses ball back to quarterback before reaching the line of scrimmage. 3. The fullback, tight ends, and wide receivers should already be running down the field to get open in hopes that their defenders thought they were going to run the ball. 4. The quarterback will then throw the ball down the field to any fullback, tight end, or wide receiver that is open in an effort to complete the long pass.
Modified Reverse Play- 1. One wide receiver runs toward the quarterback when ball is snapped, while the other wide receiver, halfback, fullback, and both tight ends run downfield. 2. The quarterback hands the ball off to the wide receiver as if they are going to run along the edge of the sideline. 3. Before reaching the line of scrimmage at the edge of the sideline, the wide receiver turns around to throw the ball back to the quarterback. 4. The other players who are running down the field should be open due to this ploy in hopes that their defenders thought their team was going to run the

ball. 5. The quarterback will then throw the ball down the field to one of them in an effort to complete the long pass.
Demonstration: The T will call on 7 S volunteers who are willing to simulate these plays through the throwing and catching of a football with them. They will be positioned in a game-like formation with a quarterback, a center, a halfback, a fullback, two tight ends and two wide receivers to apply the aforementioned skill cues in order to provide the class with a visual aide for how to perform the actions.
Checking For Understanding: 1. What is the purpose for using trick plays in football? 2. What must the halfback do with the football after he is handed off the ball in the flea flicker play? 3. What does the wide receiver that had the ball handed off to them must do prior to stepping over the line of scrimmage in the modified reverse trick play?
The T will then explain to the Ss the format of the tournament as well as rules and regulations for the football games. Format- The tournament configuration will be that of a round-robin arrangement. 2 teams will be playing on the field at one time (3 teams in total). The teams will be held responsible setting up on the line of scrimmage, being on sides, keeping track of downs and completed plays towards a first down, scoring, and creating and using plays that utilize everyone. The team that is not playing will be stationed on the adjacent field practicing to incorporate the trick plays introduced as well as any prior material worked on during the unit. When not playing on the field, the team practicing will be provided with a play template and a pencil in which they must create their own trick play that they need to use at least one time during their games. They will be encouraged to use the trick plays that have been presented to them as a guide for making their own. These worksheets will be collected by the T at the end of class.

Ss will be required to use trick plays that they have learned and created during the tournament in an effort to help them break free from their defenders. Rules and Regulations- Teams will be made up of 8 players. No contact, blocking, or quarterback sneaks. The player with the ball is ruled down after being touched by the defender with 1 hand. A series of play is 4 downs, the ball goes to the other team at the same spot on the field after the opposing team has used up all of their downs. 2 pass completions over the line of scrimmage must be made in order to achieve a first down. Only 1 running play is allowed to be used for each series of play. A defense can blitz 1 time during each series of play after 5 counted-out-loud seconds. The quarterback is only allowed to run ahead of the line of scrimmage when being rushed by a defender. The end-zones will be the sidelines, which will be marked by cones, since the games will be played using the width of an actual football field. The games will begin with 1 team throwing the ball off to their opponent, which will be decided by a Rock, Paper, Scissors battle. Games will be played to 8 minutes. The team with the most points when time has expired will be declared the winner.
Checking for Understanding: 1. What is the number of completions that needs to be made in order to get a first down? 2. What is the number of running plays that can be used per series of play? 3. What is the number of seconds that must be counted-out-loud before a defender can blitz the quarterback?
Transition: Ss will be divided into 3 teams by the T randomly choosing them by picking 1 male and 1 female in this very order for every selection they make so that each squad is formed in a coed arrangement. Each team will be authorized a pinnie color and assigned to their designated field (fields will be marked by yard lines) by the T.

The T will ask Ss to pick up 1 football for each field and jog to their playing area to get game or practice started.
Activity #1: The Ss will start tournament play with the T walking around to each field with their back to the wall and issue them with feedback on their trick play utilization as well as any of the other skills taught throughout the unit.
Extension Up: The teams that are achieving constant success in games will be instructed that they must have every player on the team play quarterback before scoring a point.
Extension Down: The teams who are struggling during their games will be allowed to have quarterback run the ball for any down they want.
Transition: Once the first game has concluded, the teams will be instructed to jog to the middle of the activity area to form a semicircle across from the T, leaving their footballs at the field.
Informing: The Ss will now be made aware of 2 more trick plays for which they can incorporate in their gamest, known as the hook and ladder and fumblerooski. The T will once again illustrate the formations and how they are ran to the class by using the whiteboard to show them where each player is supposed to move to on the field.
Skill Cues (Trick Plays): Hook and Ladder Play- 1. Once the ball is snapped, the halfback, fullback, and tight ends will run straight down the field, while the wide receivers will run straight about 10 yards and then cut towards the middle of the field (In Route). 2. The quarterback will then throw the ball to whichever wide receiver is open. 3. After the catch, the other wide receiver should continue to move towards one another to slightly behind where the reception was made. 4. The wide receiver who then made the catch will toss the ball behind where he is located to his crossing teammate,

who, after caught, will then try to run it down field.
Fumblerooski Play- 1. On the snap of the ball, the quarterback will intentionally mishandle it. 2. The quarterback must then create the misconception as though they have the ball in their hand, where it is handed off to the halfback. 3. Pretending to have the ball in their hands, the halfback will run forwards towards the sideline with their back to the defense. 4. With the ball on the ground behind the center, the fullback will pick it up and run the opposite direction of the halfback down the field.
Demonstration: The T will call on 7 S volunteers who are willing to simulate these plays through the throwing, catching, and running of a football with them. They will be positioned in a game-like formation with a quarterback, a center, a halfback, a fullback, two tight ends and two wide receivers to apply the aforementioned skill cues in order to provide the class with a visual aide for how to perform the actions.
Checking For Understanding: 1. What is the effect that using trick plays should have on the opposing defense? 2. What pass pattern should the 2 wide receivers be running when using the hook and ladder play? 3. What direction must the fullback run in when completing the fumblerooski play?
Transition: The T will let Ss know which teams will be playing and which one will be practicing. The Ss will then be told to jog to their playing area to get game or practice started.
Activity #2: The Ss will continue tournament play with the T walking around to each field with their back to the wall and issue them with feedback on their trick play utilization as well as any of the other skills taught throughout the unit.
Extension Up: The teams who are continuing to experience constant success during the games will be told that they need to

complete 3 passes in a series of play in order to achieve a first down.
Extension Down: The teams who are having a hard time to attain anything productive in their games will be made known that they only need to complete 1 pass to get a first down.
Transition: After the second game is over, the teams will be instructed to jog to the middle of the activity area to form a semicircle across from the T, leaving their footballs at the field.
Informing: The Ss will be provided with 2 more trick plays for which they can incorporate in their games, known as the statue of liberty and head snap. The T will once again illustrate the formations and how they are ran to the class by using the whiteboard to show them where each player is supposed to move to on the field.
Skill Cues (Trick Plays): Statue of Liberty Play- 1. As the ball is snapped to the quarterback, the fullback, tight ends, and wide receivers will straight down the field. 2. The quarterback will then take a few steps back with the ball as if they are going to throw it to an open teammate. 3. While the quarterback scans the field, they will then deceptively put their hand with the football behind their back so that the halfback standing a few feet behind them can grab it. 4. The halfback will then run with the ball down the field.
Head Snap Play- 1. The quarterback, fullback, and halfback will need to be aligned in the shotgun formation. 2. As the ball is snapped, the quarterback will pretend as if it went over their head. 3. Once this is taking place, the halfback or fullback must quickly catch the snap without the defense seeing this take place. 4. The player will the ball then run it down.
Demonstration: The T will call on 7 S volunteers who are willing to simulate these plays through the running of a football with

them. They will be positioned in a game-like formation with a quarterback, a center, a halfback, a fullback, two tight ends and two wide receivers to apply the aforementioned skill cues in order to provide the class with a visual aide for how to perform the actions.
Checking For Understanding: 1. What is the reason behind why trick plays should not always be used on each down in football? 2. What role does the quarterback play in making the statue of liberty play successful? 3. What must the halfback or fullback do with the snap to make sure that the defense is disorganized during the head snap play?
Transition: The T will let Ss know which teams will be playing and which one will be practicing. The Ss will then be told to jog to their playing area to get game or practice started.
Activity #3: The Ss will finish out tournament play with the T walking around with their back to the wall and issue them with feedback on their trick play utilization as well as any of the other skills taught throughout the unit.
Extension Up: The teams that are still excelling in the tournament will be told that they must have each player on their team catch a pass before they are allowed to score.
Extension Down: The teams that cannot seem to maintain a proficient offensive flow will be granted with 2 seconds after the ball is snapped to begin their play before any opposing defender can move.
Transition: After tournament play is over, the teams will be instructed to jog to the middle of the activity area to give their footballs to the T and form a semicircle across from them.

which will be playing for the class championship will be announced. The team that does not get to play again will be split in half and given roles by the T that they must perform during the game in relation to the team in which they are affiliated with (T will make Ss known of this). These roles will include coach, scorekeeper, statistician, and referee, T will explain to these individuals the description for each role. The description for these roles are as followed: Coach- Tells team to run 1 play for each series of play (will be told to use pass patterns and trick plays already taught to class). Scorekeeper- In charge of tallying up teams score and downs for which they are on. Statistician- Keeps record of the teams and individual passes to attempts, catches, touchdowns, turnovers, interceptions, and fumbles (will be given paper and pencil). Referee- Officiate the game for team that they are associated with (T will be overseen for any close calls as well as can overrule any call that they feel is incorrect). The same rules and regulations for tournament play will apply for that of the championship, other than game will be played to 17 minutes.
Checking For Understanding: 1. What must the coach of each team include when selecting plays? 2. What is one of the stats that the statistician must have a record of for their team? 3. What should the referees do if they are not sure about a certain call that they should make?
Transition: The T will let both teams develop a plan for how they are going to play and other Ss arrange themselves in the necessary positions based on their specific roles so that there is no confusion when the game is started.
Small-Sided (Championship) Game: The Ss will complete the unit of football by taking part in the class championship game with the T walking around with their back to the wall and issue them with feedback on their trick play utilization as well as any of the other skills taught throughout this period and make sure that each S assigned to a role is completing it correctly for their team.

Extension Down (only if necessary): If the team is having great difficulty during the game then their opponent will be told that they cannot blitz them during any series of play.
Transition: After a champion has been crowned, Ss will then be asked to pick up all the equipment and place them in a pile by the fence. The T will then have the Ss jog to the middle of the field and form a semicircle across from where they are standing.
Closure: At the meeting area, the T will thank the Ss for listening and cooperating during the lesson; only if they behaved respectfully. The following questions will be issued to the Ss reviewing the content presented during the class period: 1. What is a specific example of how trick plays can alter a defense in order to help the offense in football? 2. What role does timing for the sequence of events for the trick play have on its success in football? 3. What is a good situation for when you would want to use a trick play in a football game? The worksheets in which each team was told to create a play on when practicing during the tournament will be collected by T.
Transition: T will tell Ss to head into their locker rooms and change so that they are ready to go to their next class when the bell rings.
