Pharmacological concepts, methodologies and techniques are fundamental for the drug development process. The typical participant will have a background in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, engineering, health science or the like. Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are addressed separately to be familiar with the theoretical background behind these disciplines.

This course is a part of the compulsory curriculum for the professional masters programme Master of Industrial Drug Development at the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Aim The objective of the course is to give the students a fundamental concept of pharmacology, its experimental tools and an insight in the major drug classes.
Who should attend? Drug developers who wish to work in a more rational and systematic way within drug development by improving their qualifications and thus securing a better understanding of the drug development processes. It is suitable especially for current and prospective project leaders/managers, group leaders, function managers, senior scientists or others who want to get a grip on fundamental aspects of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics in a comprehensive and suitable/practical way. The typical participant will have a background in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, engineering, health science or the like.
Course outline The pharmacological concepts, methodologies and techniques are fundamental for the drug development. As discipline it does not fit in for one particular part of the process but an important feature is the translation of animal data to the human situation. Thus basic pharmacological knowledge is important for those who want to possess an integrated view on the effects and behaviour of the drug candidate from discovery to clinical development. Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are addressed separately to be familiar with the theoretical background behind these disciplines.
The course contains the following topics: Pharmacology and the drug development process. Classes of pharmacology targets. Classification of receptors. Drug classes. Measurement of pharmacologic effects. In vitro pharmacology, concepts and methodology. Pharmacokinetics I-V Basic concepts Extra vascular dosing Non-compartment analysis Toxicokinetics and exposure Scaling Metabolism Biomarkers High throughput techniques in exploratory pharmacology Pharmacogenetics In vivo pharmacology methodology Animal models for cardiovascular diseases, obesity, bone and joint diseases and pain. Behavioural animal models.
The course contains the following practices: Hands-on pharmacokinetics with computer simulation Case studies as exercises Laboratory demonstrations
