Mrs. Frank: ____________ Date: _____________ Jennifer Mariaca Mrs. Frank Senior Capstone, period, 8 February 28, 2014 Breast Cancer (Think Pink) Proposal I. Introduction
Breast cancer is an issue that many Americans know about, but are scared to talk about both men and women. But what is breast cancer? Breast cancer is caused by an uncontrollably growth of breast cells. In the United States at least 206,966 women and 2,039 men were diagnose with breast cancer in 2010("Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program Turning Cancer Data Into Discovery."). As expressed by statistics from previous years, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the second main cause of deaths among ethnicities. This is due to the lack of information of the risk factors of breast cancer such as gender, alcohol abuse, and diets. Women should have more accessibility to mammogram exams because the lack of money that the lower class faced makes it impossible to prevent the development of breast cancer. In the United States about 1/3 of women who had a mammography reduce their chance of developing cancer. Women in their 40s who obtain a mammogram examination once every 1-2 years in the United States have a 40% chance of not developing breast cancer (Mammography Facts). However, we have to keep in mind that the number of mammogram exams depends on the age of the woman. In fact, if we make a mammography affordable, we can save millions of lives. M a r i a c a | 2
Sponsor: ______________ Date: _____________ Mrs. Frank: ____________ Date: _____________ The action that I will have to take in order to make a difference is to work closely with AVON Foundation for Women Breast Health Outreach Program. The AVON Foundation for Women Breast Health Outreach Program was founded in 1955 with the purpose to aid women with access to breast cancer care. The foundation has helped many low-income, and under- insured women to acquire regular mammograms and clinical breast exams over 50 countries around the world and raised approximately $700millions. The Avon foundation has made a significant in pact in a woman live, in the year of 2,000 more than 1.2 million women acquire screening services and more than 11 million people were educated about breast cancer. (AVON BHOP). My main focus for capstone will be to address the four pillars of the Asia Society Leadership Performance, which are; investigating the world by discovering ways to educate people about my topic and getting informed about how to prevent it. Recognizing perspectives that will help me acknowledge different perspectives of people and its government when it comes to addressing an issue. Communicating ideas by speaking in public and know how to explain fluently about breast cancer. Taking action will help me become more self-confident, responsible, and organize. This capstone will also prepare for challenges that I would come across in college and life in general. How can society spread awareness about breast cancer? I. Learning Objectives A. III. Measuring and timeline My partners and I aim to impact approximately 100 lives. In order to keep track of our goal I will make a table that would include the name of every person that comes to any event hosted by my partners and I, and at the end of each event we will graph it to see how many people we impacted over time. The outcome for my Breast Cancer (Think Pink) capstone solution is to sell approximately 50 tickets and 70 bracelets during our walk on March 29, in order to obtain more than $100 dollars to donate to the Avon Foundation for Women and helped them get breast care. The main purpose of this capstone is to get women in our community informed about the risk factors of breast cancer and how can it be prevented. IV. Form My capstone will take three forms. The first step will be to complete a 6-8 page college research with MLA sources. The second step will be to spread awareness among our community by having a walk where I plan to impact about 100 women lives. The last step I will take will be to volunteer in the Avon walk on April 12 & 13 that will benefit 37 women. Our target will be women in our community. M a r i a c a | 5
Sponsor: ______________ Date: _____________ Mrs. Frank: ____________ Date: _____________ I will have a presentation at the end of the year where many of my friends and families in the community will come see and learn more in detail about breast cancer. This will give parents the opportunity to ask questions about any concerns they have. Preparation To complete this capstone I will need: A. To have well organized my binder B. To manage my time wisely C. To meet at least 1-2 times a week with my sponsor D. To be serious, and dedicated E. volunteer for the Avon Walk F. To fundraise for the Susan G. Komen My greatest obstacle will be to get parents of current students join our cause, because many of these parents dont want to face the fact that they might be developing breast cancer.
