Research proposal worksheet III
1) Introduction/ rationale What is the topic of this research and why is it important? Why is more research needed? What is the specific research question? Since English is a foreign language for Afghan teachers, English teachers in Afghanistan have got many grammatical mistakes when teaching in English. As I have witnessed, some teachers have subject verb agreement mistakes and other English teachers have tense usage mistakes. Now that there are many mistakes English teachers make in Afghanistan, I would like to study and find out what are Afghan EFL teachers most common grammatical mistakes when teaching in English? 2) Method Research Design: To conduct this study I would like to use observation method. Participants: My participants will be high school EFL teachers of Kunduz province. From five Kunduz high schools which have almost around fifty English teachers I will systematically select ten English teachers out of the fifty. Then I will observe each teachers class for three sessions. To do this research I will use observation method. Data sources and instruments: Which data types will you use (questionnaire, interview, or both)? Describe the data collection instrument. In conducting this research I will observe the classes. I dont use any questionnaires or interview. I only see what happens in the class, how the teachers communicate, to find out Qeyamuddin Mubashir's Assignment in Educational Enquiry 2013
what common grammatical mistakes they make. To collect this data I use audio recorder and observation schedule using a category system Procedure: Step by step explanation of how you want to collect your data I collect my data in two ways. First, I systematically choose my samples from fifty teachers. Then, I will go to each teachers class for three sessions to observe them. When I go to the classes I do two things: the first thing I do is I get permission from the teacher and record his/her voice using a voice recorder. The second thing I do here is I take notes using an observation schedule. I note the categories or I mean the mistakes I am searching for each time they happen. Analysis: Since I sue a mixed method for my research both qualitative and quantitative, to analyze my data first, I will transcribe all the audios from the thirty class sessions. Then, I will identify the three common grammatical errors I wanted to find out. Later I will go through the transcripts that how the teachers have made these errors. As well as, I look at the thirty observation schedule table and find out how many times the teachers have made each grammar error. To write my report first I will give some explanation of the errors what errors did the teachers make and how often did they make these mistakes. Then, I will choose some extracts from the transcriptions of the thirty classes and use them as example in the paper. 3) Discussion I think many teachers of English in Afghanistan have subject verb agreement errors. The result as a common error may be either subject verb agreement problem or the wrong usage of tenses. I mean using present simple tense for every situation. If the English teachers have any of the mentioned errors, then I will write the report of my research regarding those errors. I would publish the outcome of my research and share it with English teacher to correct their errors so that they improve their English knowledge. 4) Conclusion: Since in Afghanistan especially Kunduz English teachers have studied English in Afghanistan and also they have not been exposed to any native speaking community of English they may have common grammatical errors. For this reason I would like to do this research to find out what the commonly made errors of English language teachers are in Kunduz high school. I do this research because, if the teachers do not realize their grammatical mistakes, they may continue teaching their students with those mistakes. As a result students will learn the language worse than their teachers. I want to find out the commonly made grammar mistakes by the English teachers in Kundz high schools and later inform them from their mistakes. This research might have instrumental threat. This is because I am using sound recorder. If the recorder do not work well I may lose my data or get it with a poor quality then the outcome of my research would be poor. To solve this problem I should have at least two sound recorders using at the same time and as well as I should have extra batteries with me.
