c/o Paul Budke Rt. 1, Box888, Beaverton, OR 97007 "Serving Christ with our Brothers in Zambia' March 31 1980 r| Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: How has the Lord Been blessing you? We sincerely pray that your blessings have been many; we cannot help but praise Him for His goodness to us5 Did you notice our new heading? We have committed ourselves to a new approach to the work in the Mbala area and are anxious to see where the Lord will lead in the coming months and_years. In the coming months we have dedicated ourselves to working with the ^ambiaii Christians--as partners in-the-evangel-ism-of their country, and to encourage them to do more evangelism and church planting on their own. We do not as yet see where this will ultimately lead, but we are excited about the possibilities. More about that later. we turn our eyes back East to the ^ African continent and^Mbal^. What in the world! Lee plans to be the body. home before the baby is born, but during those three months we have packed a large number of potential activities and projects to be completed. Here we go:- - -- 1) The building of a church building to seat around 200 people in the Township of Mbala. The Mbala Christians will be doing a large portion of the work and with the Lord's blessing we will be able to complete building in the allotted time. In Zambia we do not purchase the land on which to build, it is given to us if we will develop it within a certain length of time; that time will expire in June of this year, and so the building must begin. 2) Laying the groundwork and exploring the feasibility of the Zambia Evangelism Support Team. A letter I received back from one of our Christian brothers the other day was very encouraging concerning the possibilities of ZEST. 3) Visitation of the churches in the Mbala area with the purpose of checking their progress and growth, evangelistic out reach, exhorting them in their work and helping them with any problems they may not have been able to work out. 4) Two projects that we pray will lead to further ability of the churches to evangelize with their own support base. GILBERT ARP VOLUNTEERS Gilbert, a member of the West Hills Christian Church and a long time friend of the Albaughs will be going to Zambia during the month of June to assist in the building of the church in Mbala. Gilbert is an engineer for Washington County and will be a great asset to the work. FINANCIAL NEEDS Building costs are high in Zambia (as they are at home). We estimate that the building will cost around $20,000. Our reserves at this time amount to about $10,000, including funds needed for travel. Please keep this need before you in the coming months. We are so thankful for the consistent support you have given in the past to the work in Zambia and we are confident that the Lord will continue to work through you to meet the coming needs. Your support during the months of April - June will be very crucial to the building project. PRAYER NEEDS Cheryl and I ask your prayers for our family during the months ahead. It will not be an easy time for us during the separation period, and Brian will miss his "Daddy". Pray for Cheryl's preg nancy. Hold before the Lord the four activities previously mentioned that Lee and Gilbert will be working on while in Zambia. Pray that all goes smoothly and the time will be used well. Pray for the preparations being made for the venture beginning in May. Uphold the Zambian Christians daily. Remember the financial needs for building the church building. FUTURE PLANS working with a possible ZEST pro- ifrrft^ gram,he will also be making some 'T* decisions as to the future work in HHrl Mbala. We are praying for guid- ance as to the way to approach the work of evangelism and church planting in Mbala, whether we need B be there full time or if a lay ! ministry approach to the work -J would be possible. We have before us the possibility of a job in the S^tates-^hatwouldallow -uis-. 2 -BL. months out of the year fprjork in - Uemth thebuMingcre^. Zambia; encouraging, assisting, and ^ working with the Zambian Christians. We believe this approach has some real advantages towards building an indigenous church in Mbala that is capable of evangelism without the presence of a full time missionary. We will be sharing these things with you after Lee returns in August and the plans are developed. May the Lord richly bless you as you continue your service for Him. We weren't sure how Brian would take this separation, but he was too busy playing with his cousins at the airport to worry about Daddy until "Daddy" was half way to Seattle. Before leaving for Zambia we had set three main goals for this trip, which were: 1) To survey the present needs of the Christians in the Mbala area, encouraging and planning the future with them. .2) To begin construction of the Mbala township -church^uilding-and - to insure that the plot would not be tak;en away because the time had lapsed for development to begin. 3) To formulate our future plans on how to work in Mbala. We feel these goals were pretty much accomplished except for the actual building construction. Let me share a little about the trip. THE JOURNEY On May .16 I landed in Kasama, Zambia, After being away for 11 months, what would things be like in Zambia? Would the churches have stagnated or grown? Politically was the country doing better? All these questions were on my mind as Tom^Fort drove me into town and down the familiar streets of Kasama. Things looked close to the same, except for the new 3 story building erected for the Workmans Compensation people. (The lirst "high rise" in Kasama) We shared together news of the world and talked late into the night. In the Fort's back yard sat our poor Peugeot pick-up, minus a wind shield and with ^ flat tires. The chickens had been using the inside as a roost after the thieves carried off the windshield. Unbelievably, after a new battery and a little cleaning up, it started on the first pop of the engine! It looked a little strange with a piece of plastic instead of a windshield, but it worked, people just thought me_a. little strange! By May 20th I was in Mbala looking up the African Christians and letting them know I was back in town. Just before leaving for Zambia we had heard that the plans for our building were lost by the planning authorities, but looking into our stuffed Post Box I found a one month old letter from them saying that we had final approval! Another letter in the box said we had one month to reply if we still wanted the plot, It was a month to the day when I opened up the box! I ran down to the Town^Council and paid the additional fee for the lease with the stip- ulation that development on the property be completed in a year. I then began looking into materials to lay the foundation, but was disap pointed to find that there was no cement in the area. Gilbert Arp from the West Hills Christian Church had planned to meet me in Mbala during possible. Because of the cemerlt problem I telegram- med to tell him that it would not be possible at this time. HOW ARE THE CHRISTIANS? It was encouraging tofind that the churches in Mbala, both in town and the villages, were doing well and had grown. It is good to see some growth while you are away, this indication of a willingness to evangelize on their own was one of the qualities I was looking for on this trip. The churchyat Kalekwa Village has built a meeting place at a central place in the village. Up until this structure was completed they had been meeting in the home of one of the members, and needless to say it was getting a little cramped. 6? people met to greet me for a service one morning. It was good to see familiar faces, and some not so fami liar ones. There was a good spirit in all the churches. At Malamba Tu over 50 people met for worship, followed by two baptisms. In the town church which is an older congregation but one which has had little growth for some years, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted 5? church and an enthusiastic group of believers excited about the future plans to build. All of the churches were happy with the Lungu language songbooks we had compiled, printed and delivered. They now can sing in their own dialect. Praise the Lord for the believers who have remained faithful and have been pressing on to evangelize their areas. It warms my heart! This encourages us to go forward and give them our support in love! SOME OBSERVATIONS What are things like in Zambia at this time? Here are a few of observations that I made while in the country: 1) Indications from the young Zambian Christians who have been through Secondary school (High school) show a great stirring of interest in spiritual matters. Young Christians are taking the lead in evangel ism in the main towns , mainly using english. In Kasama a group of young Christians organized an evangelistic crusade for one week while I was there and saw many come to Christ. The results of this crusade were evident the next Sunday in worship. ^ 2). The next few years will be crucial in establishing the african indigenous church outside of mission influence. Just as these african nations are emerging into adulthood in the world, so the churches are growing and_taking their own lead and direction, 3) Politically things are better in Zambia. Foreign workers are again being invited to help in the countries development. Economical ly the picture has improved a bit, but recovery is being slowed by a potential famine situation this year. 4) The general feeling in the area has become more relaxed as the tensions of a war footing have eased. I was not asked for identifi cation one time while in Zambia! FUTURE PIAKS The trip has encouraged us to make the decision to return to Zambia in November of this year for another 3 year term. The next years should be the most productive of our time in Zambia as we are well es tablished in Mbala and have a good base from which to grow. The appar ent^ willingness of the people to evangelize at this time is a good indication that the time is right to harvest. The Lord has equipped us with the language and a willing people, so we feel this is where He wants us for the coming three years. We are expecting our second born in August of this year, A depar ture in November will give mother and newborn some time to get adjusted. THANK YOU... ...for your prayers and support during this difficult time. We hope that we will be able to visit you all again before leaving in November. We hoy before you the cost of building a church building,._^This .will cost in the neighborhood of $20,000, which we are hoping to raise a substantialyart of along with our traveling expenses. That is a big order, but if the Lord is in it, all will go well. Please pray with us about this need. Aly be in prayer about the needs of the churches. Continued zeal in their work. Encouragment in the Faith. Safety from the food problem this year. I know they would appreciate your prayers. They all were very concerned about the volcanoe and our safety. They wanted me to greet you all in the name of Christ. IN CLOSING It is difficult to share with you all that has happened on the survey trip and the intervening period since the last Newsletter. It was a rewarding and fruitful venture, the Christians were excited to see me and encouraged with our plans to build on our retiirn in November. Please hold them and us up in your prayers during these months of pre paration. You will be hearing from us in the near future concerning our return and those preparations. It is because of the birth of Christ Jesus over 1980 years ago that we are able to carry the message of salvation to the people of Zambia. What a privilege to be bearers of that message ! MWALE SHANI? How was the journey? Packing boxes, moving, last minute details, sad goodbyes are behind us for the time being as we relax for a day here in Lusaka, Zambia, with mission friends. The "day after" jet lag is upon us after 30 hours of straight travel from the States. We arrived the morning of Dec. 1, the Davis and Burlington Families met us at the air port as we struggled through customs with 6 suitcases, two kids and 5 carry-on bags ("never again", says Lee). Last nights sleep was a welcome one. Brian and Christy slept well despite the hot humid weather we are having. The children traveled pretty well, considering the torture it is to fly at that age. Sitting for 9 straight hours is just not Brians' idea of a fun time! This morning Brian drank some milk that did not settle with him, and so we made some fast trips to the bathroom, but otherwise the children are doing well, along with their tired mother and father. British Caledonia Airline was very good to us during our layover in London. They even allow ed us to rest in their first class lounge; praise the Lord for their mercy to four tired travelers. On this coming Thursday, December 4th, we will head north for Kasama and then, Lord will ing, on December 8th we will go on up to Mbala and reclaim our house. It has been a long road since we started packing up the first week in Nov ember, now the unpacking begins but the end is in sight !! THANK YOU FRIENDS ! !
