In the Stanley & Upper Brisbane Catchments May 2014 Catching Up Pasture field day looks at forage budgeting for the dry season Knowing how much pasture youve got in your paddocks is really important during dry times, and in autumn when pasture growth starts shutting down. The low rainfall received over the summer this year means a lot of graziers are headed into winter with relatively low levels of forage available for stock. Native pasture species dont grow much forage during the cooler months from April to October, so its really important to assess the quality and quantity of pasture you currently have as this will carry you through the winter dry season. You dont want to find youre carrying too many cattle for your pasture, as this can end up costing you a lot of money and degrading pasture toward the end of the dry season. At the recent Stocktake workshop in Perseverance, we introduced more than 20 local landholders to forage budgeting. The Stocktake method helps calculate short term pasture availability and manage grazing to match it. Forage budgeting is important during all seasons, but obviously of great significance at this time of year. A good understanding of the forage demand of cattle and the tools to assess pasture availability puts you in the best position to manage the grazing on your property.
The Stocktake workshop was delivered by SEQ Catchments and Ravensbourne & District Landcare Group in partnership with the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Australian Government. Measuring pasture availability at the Stocktake workshop What do you value about the Upper Brisbane and Stanley?
