CHAPTER 1

AUTOMATIC SIGNALLING

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Automatic block working is a system of train working in

which movement of the train is controlled by the automatic
stop signal. These signals are operated automatically by the
passage of trains in to through and out of the automatic
signalling sections.

1.2 FEATURES

Automatic block system

 The line shall be provided with continuous track

circuiting or axle counters.
 Block section is divided into various small-
signalling sections.
 Each signalling section is governed by an
Automatic stop signal.
 Each signalling section is further divided into
berthing and overlap track circuit.

Maintenance handbook on March.2001

1.3 ADVANTAGES

 Line capacity increases.

 Less dependence on human agencies.

 Automatic stop signal can be passed at `ON' position as

per General Rule 9.02 , after stopping one minute by day
and two minutes by night.

1.4 Automatic stop signal

 Automatic stop signals are multiple

Aspect colour light signals.
( 3Aspect/
4 Aspect stop signals)

 Aspect of Automatic stop signal

are controlled by the movement of
train.

 Numbering of signals -Normally odd nos. for up direction

and even nos. for down direction.

 Automatic stop signal is provided with `A' marker.

Semi Automatic Stop Signal

 Semi Automatic stop signal can work as
a manual stop signal/ Automatic stop
signal.
 Semi Automatic signal is provided with
illuminated ‘A’ sign.
 Illuminated 'A' sign will lit when signal
is working as Automatic stop signal.
 Illuminated ‘A’ sign
White A
will not lit when signal illuminated A
is working as a manual letter ‘A’ against A
stop signal. black

 Controlled by king
lever/ knob/ switch.

 Cascading arrangement- When a Fig. No.2

colour light signal is showing a particular aspect and its
lamp of that aspect fuses then signal becomes blank. To
avoid this condition, cascading or cutting in arrangement
in the lamp controlling circuit is provided in such a way
that if a lamp fuses the signal can be restored to next
restrictive aspect.
Example. If green lamp fuses (when signal is displaying
clear aspect), then the more restrictive yellow aspect can

Automatic signalling

be lit or if yellow lamp fuses (when signal is displaying

caution aspect) then red aspect can be lit.

 Red lamp protection: It is provided to avoid the passing

of train in no light condition of a signal. In this case the
rear signal will show ON aspect, when signal ahead is
showing no light.

1.5 LEVEL CROSSING GATE IN AUTOMATIC

SIGNALLING SECTION :

LEVEL CROSSING GATE:

In Automatic signalling area, the signal controlling

movement over LC gate are semi-automatic signals. Semi
Automatic gate signal will be in "ON" position, when gate
is open for road traffic.

Level Crossing Gate signal (when no point in the route)

 Yellow circular disc with ‘G’ letter in black and

illuminated ‘A’ letter against black background are
provided.

Maintenance handbook on March.2001

CATECH/2000/S/AS/1.0 5

 Illuminated “A” sign of the

Semi-Automatic gate signal will lit
when the level crossing gate is closed
against the road traffic and signal is
working as an Automatic stop signal.

points are in the route)
 Illuminated ‘A’ and ‘AG’ sign are
provided on gate signal..

 Illuminated “A” sign will lit when

level crossing is closed against road
traffic and points in the route are
correctly set and locked and signal is
working as an Automatic stop signal. A A

 Illuminated ‘AG’ sign will lit when

points in the route are correctly set and
locked and LC gate is defective and
signal is working as an Automatic stop
signal. Fig no. 4

3.2 DO’S and DON’TS

3.2.1 DO’s

 As far as possible bulb must be replaced during

morning period since mostly bulb fuse during first
5 hours.
 Check due date of overhauling of track relay. if
due, it should be replaced timely.
 Apply glue epoxy on the rail and fish plate of
joints to avoid shorting due to iron fillings and iron
powder.
 Check time delay circuit is working properly.
 Always work carefully as train traffic is on higher
side in automatic signalling territory.

Automatic signalling
CATECH/2000/S/AS/1.0 36

3.2.2 DON’TS

 Forget to take the no load current of signal

transformer.
 Forget to close and lock the back cover after
completion of work.
 Discharged Battery excessively.
 Add impure distilled water and acid in the batteries.
 Bypass the regulating resistance of track circuit at any
time.
 Disturb the antilittering arrangement of track relay.
 Forget to give disconnection memo to on duty
ASM/CASM at for time of attending failure.
 Adjust the track circuit beyond the limit of track
circuit parameters.
 Commence maintenance work of point without
telecommunication with ASM/CASM.
 Try to replace any part of the point machine or
associated wiring without proper disconnection
notice.
