,e have come to realise that the Histor) an* Philosoph) of Science an*
/athematics can ma(e si+nificant an* essential contributions to the learnin+ an*
un*erstan*in+ of science an* mathematics, even at the school level. "his
contribution ,oul* not consist in the a**ition of historical or philosophical material
to the topics alrea*) bein+ tau+ht. 7ather, ,e su++est that a historical an*
philosophical a,areness shoul* be brou+ht to bear on the teachin+ of the tra*itional
topics. "he absence of such an a,areness has resulte* in the follo,in+
*eficiencies in the learnin+ of science an* mathematics in schools not onl) in %n*ia
but also abroa*.

the mathematics that the stu*ents learn *o not appear to be naturall) relate* to

Althou+h i*eall) all the school teachers of science an* mathematics in %n*ia

b) 1 teachers at each -or(shop3. -e ,ill, of course, see( the a*vice of all the
