8 Fender washers

The AG-3X 3rd-Axis upgrade kit actually support s three 2-axis GoPro gimbals,
the DJI H3-2D, the Tarot GoPro and the XAircraft Stella 2-axis gimbal. The lower
pan motor plate, has mounting holes that are compatible with either the original
H3-2D top mounting plate (red holes), or the newer one that comes with the
Phantom 2/H3-2D combo setup (blue holes). This lower plate will also fit the Tarot
2-axis GoPro gimbal, which would use the yellow holes.

Phantom 1/2 Installation

This installation kit option works for both the original Phantom, and for the newer Phantom 2 platform.
The only difference is that you need to use the provided 100mm 8-wire flat cable extension with the
H3-2D cable that comes out of the Phantom 2s fuselage.

The first step is to add the 23mm leg extensions to the two landing gear sections. Start by removing the
eight screws that attach the legs to the body. The compass and the CANBus connector (Phantom 2
only) need to be moved up about 12-15mm. Use a jewelers phillips head screwdriver to loosen the four
screws enough that you can slide the assembly up. Re-tighten the screws.

Next use four of the plastic spacers and four
M3x30mm screws to reattach the two leg sections
to the body, using the two outer holes on each leg
section.

The whole center plate assembly, with the
controller board and pan motor attached, then is
attached to four inner landing gear mounting holes,
via four of the special silicon two-piece grommets
which need to be installed in the four large holes
on the center plate. It is easier to do one corner
first, and then add the other three, one at a time.

Start by carefully peeling the ring portion of the grommet, from the main portion.

Feed the larger portion of the grommet through the hole on the bottom side of the
center plate (i.e. the side with the motor and the mounted controller board). Make
sure the center portion is all the way through.

Next reattach the ring portion over the center part, and then feed a M3x40mm screw
through one of the wide fender washers, all they way through the grommet, and add a
fender washer on the other side, over the ring.

While holding this sandwich assembly like a syringe, feed the end of the screw
through the inner landing gear leg hole, and through another of the 23mm plastic
spacers, which is placed between the LG and the body. Screw this down, but when
you feel the screw hit the brass insert in the silicon grommet, back out the screw
about 1/4-turn. Repeat this process for the other three corners and then go to the
last section to complete the gimbal installation portion of these installation
instructions.

H3-2D Gimbal Installation

The final step is to attach the gimbal assembly to the lower pan motor plate. There are two H3-2D
mounting options, depending on which version of H3-2D is used, either three or four M3x8mm screws
and M3 nuts are used to attach the upper portion of the H3-2D cross mount. In the case of the special
Phantom 2 combo, four mounting hole positions are used (the four blue-circled holes in the picture on
page 1), but for all other H3-2D setups, three holes are used (the three red-circled holes). Also, for the
latter, the four rubber balls should be installed in the top H3-2D isolation plate, prior to mounting this
plate to the lower pan motor plate. The H3-2D can now be reattached to the cross mount, via the four
rubber ball isolators.

The 3rd axis controller is self-contained, except for the small IMU, and
is preconfigured for this application. The only connections to be made
are the main power leads that need to be connected to the platforms
main pack terminals.

The IMU is attached to the back of the
camera plate on the gimbal, oriented as
shown, with the connector on the left. The
IMU is connected to the controller via a
four-wire cable with small connectors on
each end.

That completes the installation and setup process. The controller comes preset to use the follow
mode for smooth pans. At power up, make sure the camera is pointing forward. It might have to be
gently nudged to the center position

One important point to note is that many H3-2D setups might have some small micro bounces in the
video. These are usually occur during fast forward flight, or in gusty and or strong wind conditions, and
also during sharp maneuvers. These micro bounces are most prevalent with Phantom setups, but can
also be found on other platform setups as well. It is likely the cause is the four rubber balls flexing
during sharp movements. One thing that can be done that seems to help with many cases is to use
some squishy foam ear plugs and stuff them into the balls, which will stiffen them up a bit and reduce
side-to-side movements. In any case, if the micro bounces are there with just the H3-2D installed, they
will likely still be there once the 3rd axis kit is installed.
