1) About the 9/11 Scholarships Fund

The UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund has been registered with
the Charity Commission of England and Wales as a
subsidiary charity of the British Council, the United
Kingdoms international organisation for educational
opportunities and cultural relations.
UK 9/11 scholarships have been made available by
funding from the World Trade Center Disaster Fund, a
charity in England and Wales established after
September 11 2001 through contributions from
individuals and financial institutions in the UK with strong
links to New York.
UK 9/11 scholarships are awarded by an adjudication
panel made up of representatives of higher and further
education institutions in the United Kingdom. Their
decisions, made on the basis of the eligibility criteria
established by the trust board of the Fund, are final and
not open to appeal.
The administration of the scholarships including
pastoral care for scholars while in the United Kingdom
is undertaken by the British Councils Scholarships and
Exchanges, Programmes and Projects department.
Applications from residents in the United States are
handled by Scholarship America
www.scholarshipamerica.org (the USAs largest
scholarships organisation.

3) How do I get involved?
The scholarships awarded under the UK 9/11
Scholarships Fund have been made possible by the
generosity of individuals and institutions in the UK. You
could have the opportunity to come to the UK to study
and to achieve world - class qualifications. In a country
that is diverse and multicultural, you will constantly be
challenged and creatively engaged as you develop your
knowledge and achieve your ambitions.

To be eligible you must have:

Lost a parent or guardian as a result of the
terrorist attacks on the United States on
September 11 2001 or other subsequent terrorist
tragedy.

Have a parent or guardian who was thereby
permanently injured and be able to demonstrate
need, hardship or distress for the purposes of
undertaking a course in higher or further education
in the United Kingdom.

Do I have to be American to be able to apply?
There are no restrictions on nationality or on residence in
other countries.

Are there any age restrictions?
There are no age restrictions but your suitability will be
determined by your capacity to meet the entrance
requirements of the institution(s) you are applying to.
How do I know whether I qualify for help under the
needs criteria?
The UK 9/11 Scholarships Fund is required under the
terms of its endowment to ensure applicants demonstrate
need, hardship or distress. This means that applicants
must provide standard information relating to the income
and assets of themselves or their parent/guardian, as
requested in the application form.
Can I apply if I started but did not finish an earlier
tertiary education course?
You may apply for a scholarship under these
circumstances but should be prepared to explain why you
gave up your earlier studies. You will of course need to
satisfy the entrance requirements of the institution(s) you
are applying to.
4) What do UK 9/11 Scholarships cover?

The Scholarships cover funding for full-time study leading
to a degree at undergraduate or masters level (or
equivalent further education) at recognised higher
education institutes in England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland.

The Scholarships provide funding to cover the following:

Tuition fees
Travel to and from country of
residence

Stipend for living expenses and
accommodation while in the UK

What can I do?
The scholarships are offered for:

Undergraduate courses lasting no more than 4
years. All applications for medical courses (i.e. up
to 5 years duration) are subject to approval at
Board level.

Masters courses

Courses leading to a recognised qualification at
further education institutions in the UK

Accredited study periods of up to 1 years length
for students whose college or university has an
exchange agreement with a partner institution in
the UK

Please note:
- Awards are primarily intended for applicants
undertaking their first degrees, or their first Masters
course. The adjudication panel members will only give
awards for other postgraduate or research courses or
degrees once they are satisfied that they can give
appropriate funding for the above purposes.

- Awards are for full-time study only; applications for part-
time courses will not be considered.

- Education at nursery, primary or secondary level is not
covered by the scholarships.

- Courses of military education and in-company training
are not covered by the scholarships.

- Scholarships are not given for extra-mural or non-
degree courses, with the exception of further education
qualifications.

The conditional award of a 9/11 scholarship does not
guarantee a study place at a higher or further education
institution in the UK; candidates must apply separately for
admission through the Universities and Colleges

6) How do I apply for a 9/11 Scholarship?

When?
You should start considering your 9/11 Scholarship
application around 18 months before the intended course
start date e.g. Grade 10 at high school in USA, or while
you are in your second year of undergraduate study (if
you are intending to apply for a Masters course).

How?
Research courses and check you meet the
specific academic requirements

Apply for to universities through UCAS

Complete the 9/11 Scholarship application form
(see website) in full and gather supporting
documentation

Complete and sign the declaration form (see
website) and send to us along with your
completed application form

7) What happens next? How applications are handled
and assessed


Acknowledgement of receipt of application
You will receive an acknowledgement that your
application, supporting documentation and declaration
forms have been safely received and are being dealt
with.

Application assessment
Dont forget!
Ensure that you complete all complete all relevant
fields before submitting your application form.

Remember to nominate two referees and to return
your signed declaration form

Your application, supporting documentation and
declaration forms will first be assessed to ensure
that you are eligible for a UK 9/11 Scholarship.

Scholarship America (US applicants) and British
Council (UK and other country applicants) will then
contact your nominated referees to verify the
details you have included in your application.

Adjudication panel
Once your eligibility has been verified your application
will be submitted to an autonomous adjudication panel
who will decide:

whether you will receive a
scholarship

the level of award based on income
and assets information that you
have provided
You will then be notified of the decision of the
adjudication panel. The decisions of the panel are final
and not open to appeal.
Successful applicants
If you are successful, we will then advise you to make
sure your application for a place at the higher or further
education institution of your choice is being processed.

We will also contact you to guide you through the
remaining stages up to your departure for the United
Kingdom. Please note that your award will only be
finally confirmed once you have evidence that you
have been offered, and have accepted, a place at a
recognised institution in the United Kingdom.

8) 9/11 Summer School
The Summer School is a 10 day UK experience
designed to give participants a taste of life in the UK,
both culturally and academically. With this is mind, it is
hoped that this trip will interest the participants to study in
the UK at undergraduate level, or on a study abroad
element of a US-based degree course, through the UK
9/11 Scholarship Fund in the future.

It originated thanks to the generous donations from the
World Trade Centre Disaster Fund and a UK toy
manufacturer Merrythought Ltd www.merrythought.co.uk
and was organised by the British Council with the support
and involvement of Americas Camp
www.americascamp.org
Participants are 16 and 17 year olds from FDNY families
who were affected by 9/11, and members of Americas
Camp.

The Summer School experience
Previous Summer Schools have comprised of a trip to
London and to Oxford. Activities have included:

A trip to London with a tour of all the famous sights
including the Tower of London and Buckingham
Palace
A tour of Oxford University campus, including
Christchurch college which featured in a Harry
Potter film
A chance to experience the academic side of
university life
Students are accompanied by highly experienced
counsellors from Americas Camp and staff from the
British Council are present to support the students at all
times during the programme.

FAQs
What supporting documentation needs to be
provided along with the application?

All applicants are required to include the following as part
of their application:

Photocopies of all relevant academic or
examinations certificates

A condidtional or uncondional offer letter from a
UK University ; if the applicant has already
received this at the time of applying


Signed declaration form and letters from two
referees

They must also provide the following documentation to
supplement their application:

A birth certificate detailing their parents names

A death certificate for their parent/guardian lost in
the 9/11 tragedy

Supporting medical documentation if their
parent/guardian has been permanently injured as
a result of the 9/11 tragedy

In the case of the application relating to a guardian,
applicants must be able to produce documentary
evidence that a legally recognised financial arrangement
exists/existed between the applicant and the
deceased/victim.
