HOW THE
IMMIGRATION REFORM
WILL BENEFIT OUR
COUNTRYS ECONOMY
By: Ida Mora
The United States also known as
The land of the free is viewed by so many
people as an opportunity to have a better
life. Millions of people illegally migrate to
the United States seeking the so call
American dream, freedom, and jobs to
build up a new life for themselves and their
family. Little do they know they would be
out casted, rejected, hated by the people of
this so called great country.
There are roughly 11.5 million
illegal immigrant living in the United States.
Since they are illegal they are deprived from
the liberties that citizens possess. They drive
undocumented, they work in secret, they
have no health insurance, they cannot attend
college, they dont have suffrage, and they
cannot buy their own home. The top three
immigrant groups are Mexicans, Philippines,
and Indians according to, Aaron Terrazas
and Cristina Batog from the Migration
Policy Institute. Most Americans think of
immigrants as lazy individuals who take
advantage of the United States. What they
dont know is that the majority of
immigrants are hardworking individuals
who pay their bills, taxes, obey the law and
respect the country. The labor that these
immigrants do is a major part of todays
economy.
The only thing that will change the
lives of millions immigrants is called the
Immigration Reform. This reform will allow
the millions of immigrant to come out from
the shadows. They will be able to work,
invest, vote, attend college, and obtain a
license with many other benefits that an
American citizen possess. Dont think that
approving the Immigration Reform will
make it a walk in the park for illegal
immigrants to obtain citizenship easily. The
process for the Immigration Reform has
numerous types of requirements that have to
be meet. Immigrants need to have a certain
amount of years living in the United States,
they must have records proving they have
been paying taxes for the time they have
been living in the country. Being able to
speak English and to know the basics of the
United States history is another major
requirement that must be passed. Paying
penalties and going to the end of the line of
people who are trying to come into the
country legally are other requirements.
There is a large portion of the population
that believe immigrants are poor, dangerous,
terrible criminals. To be able to apply for the
reform illegal immigrant must pass a series
of background checks. If they have serious
degrees of criminal records they can no
longer apply for the reform. Lauren Fox
author of Immigration Reform Boosts
Economic Recovery states that the
countrys economy will increase by 4.5
percent in the next 20 years due to
2

immigration. By approving the Immigration
Reform illegal immigrants would have the
right to work freely boosting our countrys
economy.
The United States is in debt by
$17.075 trillion according to The National
Debt clock in New York City on October
15, 2013. According to the White House
website about Immigration and our economy
it says that approving the Immigration
reform will increase our countries GDP by
3.3 percent in 2023 around $700 billion
dollars and 5.4 percent in 2033 around $1.4
trillion dollars. Now those are some
enormous number that will greatly impact
our jobs, wages, and our way of living.
Immigrants have their own small business
that create jobs and boost the means for
more goods. Small immigrant-owned jobs
actually provide jobs for Americans. In 2007
around 4.7 million people were employed
according to the Fiscal Policy Institute.
Those small business make around $700
billion in revenue. If having small
immigrant-owned businesses create that
much profit just imagine how much the
profits will increase too after making
immigrant workers legal.
PhDs are one of the hardest and
longest college degrees that someone can
get. Did you know that 50 percent of PhD
holders are immigrants specializing in math
and science? Around 57 percent of
immigrants hold a PhD in engineering
according to the National Survey of College
Graduates. This is an incredible statistics
because getting into college is not an
opportunity that the many immigrants are
granted. Imagine all the jobs and business
that these brilliant people can create and
improve our economy greatly by just
approving the Immigration Reform.
Our current president Barack Obama
stated, that the small business leaders across
the country are committed on getting the
Immigration Reform passed, saying that it is
very crucial and critical for our countries
economy, on his video on November 5 about
the Immigration Reform. Most American
view immigration as a negative aspect
believing that immigrants bring down the
economy and decrease their wages. What
the reform will do is allow more immigrants
to work which will increase the wages and
job opportunities.
We just dont need political help to
pass this reform but we also need the
peoples support. The Immigration Reform
will not just impact 11.5 million people but
it will impact our whole nations economy
in a prosperous way. The amount of money
that our nations economy will gain on 2023
and 2033, by fixing our broken immigration
system, can go a long towards paying of the
United States debt. Put yourself in an
immigrant shoes, would you do everything
possible to get the reform passed?
