not see the North American mainland.

Russians use Alaska
First Russian Contact in Alaska
1732
Since the 10th century, Russians had been exploring the Arctic looking for new lands. In 1732, Mikhail Gvozdev, a Cossack, sailed from Kamchatka
than into the Bering Strait and found the Diomede Islands. On one of the islands Gvozdev and his men were shot at with arrows that were shot by
the Eskimos that were on the island. Gvozdev sailed near King Island where an Alaskan Native went to meet with them. that was the first Russian
contact with Alaska Native people in the American Mainland.
Russians use Alaska
1741
In 1741, Russia was interested in Alaska because of the natural resources that could be useful. While the Russians were in Alaska, fur from sea and
land animals were the main type of resource so they can benefit from the fur. At the same time, the Russians used the native women and children as
hostages so the hunters could go hunt and get the fur. The Russians became wealthy from trading with the Chinese. Later, the Russians made the
first permanent post in Alaska to invest in more money.
Cook's voyage
1776
Cook sailed along the North American coast from Oregon and along Alaskas coastlines all the way up to Bering Strait and part of Northern Alaska
First Permenant Russian Settlement
1784
Gregorii Shelikhov built the first permanent Russian post on the Kodiak Island. Also Pavel Lebedev-Lastochkin had many posts in Cook Inlet.
Baranov named First Russion Governor
1790 - 1818
Baranov was the first Chief Manager and Governor of the colony in Alaska. One of his plans was to expand the colony in the Southeast part of
Alaska.
Gold!
1848
In 1848, a Russian geologist discovered gold in the Kenai Peninsula. The news about the discovery of gold in Alaska soon spread throughout the
mining camps in California. Prospectors started making their way up to Alaska and on their way up they discovered gold in Southeast Alaska. Soon
there were gold mining camps along Southeast Alaska, Yukon River basin, and Kenai Peninsula.
Purchase of Alaska
1867
In 1867, both Russia and the U.S. made an agreement and signed a treaty of purchase of Alaska and was ratified by both Russia and the
U.S. After the purchase, the Tlingit and Haida tribes sued the U.S. because the Native havent sold their land to the Russians and the Russians sold
the land to the U.S.
Exploratrion and Mapping of Alaska's Land
1883
In the late 1800s after the purchase of Alaska, there have been gold and oil discoveries, and also interests in making salmon canneries. With all that,
people wanted accurate maps of the inland and coastal areas. Expeditions were used to find information on resources around Alaska. Around the
1900s mountain ranges and major rivers have been outlined. Geologists than took over and made maps, took photographs, notes, and wrote reports
of the territory.
Territorial Organic Act of 1912
1912
The law created its first measure of self-government. It meant that the power was given to the territorial government. Legislator was banned to have
control over fish and game, borrow money, create counties, or deal with the management or disposition of land.
WWII in Alaska
1939
The only military post in the Alaska territory was the Chilkoot Barracks in Haines.
Military Bases
1941
After the attack at Pearl Harbor, military bases were built in Anchorage, Fairbanks, also airfields and the construction of the Alaska Highway was
built.
Anti-Dicrimination Act
1945
The purpose of the act was to let the Natives and Whites in Alaska to be treated equally. The Anti-Discrimination Act was signed by Alaska Governor
Ernest Gruening.
The Constitutional Convention
11/08/1955
On Nov. 8, 1955, delegates began to draft a constitution for Alaska even though it wasnt a state yet. The delegates gathered in Fairbanks. The
Territorial Legislator approved a plan for Alaskans to make a model constitution for Alaska. George Lehleitner believed admitting Alaska to become a
state would show that it is possible to get along with people even they are separated by long distance.
Statehood for Alaska
1957
Critics often said that Alaska could not become a state. Mildred Hermann, an attorney from Juneau, said that Alaskans could do whatever it takes to
become a state because of the resources and people in Alaska. Since than, Alaska has gained national support, except from the South, to become a
state. On May 28, 1958, The House approved a bill for Alaska statehood by a 210-166 vote.
Celebrating Statehood
1958
After six days of debating, the United States Senate had voted 64-20 to add Alaska as the 49th state.
Anchorage Earthquake
03/27/1964
The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.2. The earthquake happened around the Prince William Sound region. The damage of the earthquake totalled
300-400 million dollars in 1964.
ANCSA
1971
The ANCSA was signed by President Nixon. with this Act, Natives gained 44 million acres of land in Alaska. $962.5 million was paid to Natives from
the U.S. government so Natives would not claim any remaining land in the state.
Alaska Permanent Fund
1976
The Alaska PFD was created in 1976 and was established in 1982 by the Alaska legislator
ANILCA
1980
The U.S. Congress passed the ANILCA that made 104 million acres of land to national parks and preserves, national forests, and national fish and
wildlife preserves. the purpose of this act was to protect and preserve the untouched land.
