GROUPWORKS: Facilitating Small Groups

During this 4 day course, GROUP WORKS offers prospective and practicing facilitators the opportunity to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in the art of helping people learn in small groups.

ABORIGINAL LITERACY AND PARENTING SKILLS (A-LAPS)


August 18 - 19, 2014 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
During this 2 day facilitator training, you will learn how to facilitate the A-LAPS program. A-LAPS is an innovative family literacy program designed to assist at-risk aboriginal parents in building their literacy and parenting skills. Parents with low literacy skills learn strategies that enable them to help their children with their literacy skill development, while exploring parenting topics and working on their own literacy skills. The A-LAPS program includes sessions on: Passing on Traditions and Values, Managing Conflict, Schools and Our Children, Building Self-Esteem in Our Children, Positive Discipline, Talking to Our Children and Listening Skills.

BASIC FINANCIAL LITERACY


August 20 - 21, 2014 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
During this 2 day facilitator training, you will learn how to facilitate the BASIC FINANCIAL LITERACY program. This program is designed to assist low literate learners in building their financial literacy skills and learning strategies that will assist them with money management. Topics include: Lets Talk About Money, Needs and Wants, Grocery Shopping, Stretching our Money Preparing for Winter, Budgeting, and Banking. At the completion of this training you will have explored: Basic Financial Literacy curriculum and how to incorporate it into your agencys programming facilitation strategies assessing community needs literacy instruction technique cross cultural and ESL facilitation strategies understanding and serving the basic financial literacy educational needs of low-literate learners parent-child interactive activities for clients to take home to their children

At the completion of Group Works you will have explored: creating a positive learning environment engaging adult learners addressing different learning styles your values and beliefs about facilitation asking questions effectively adapting and creating effective lesson plans addressing challenging situations leading groups how to give effective feedback to others more about yourself as a learner and as a leader communication strategies and conflict resolution a variety of interactive activities

This training is complete/incomplete for certification and requires course work including in-class facilitation, a learning summary, and a peer review of a program plan.

At the completion of A-LAPS you will have explored: A-LAPS curriculum and how to incorporate it into your agencys programming facilitation strategies assessing community needs literacy instruction technique cross cultural facilitation strategies parent education
