BRIEF HISTORY

The Dinthill Technical High School began April 1, 1938 as a Practical Training Centre to give 3 years of skilled training in agriculture and allied trades such as carpentry, welding, motor mechanics, shoemaking and mattress making to young men in the 15 17 age group. The school started with forty students under the guidance of Superintendent F.A. Foster. In the nineteen fifties the school evolved to be a Rural Secondary School called Dint Hill Rural Secondary School. In 1959 day students became a part of the institution, which once accommodated boarders only. In 1961 the school was upgraded into a Technical High School., by then the enrolment had increased to over 200, which now included girls as well . Vast changes in the curriculum and structure of the school were put into effect today Dinthill is classified as a Senior Technical High School and still continues to dedicate to the task of ably preparing students for the role as contributing members of the Jamaican society and the wider world.

The aim of the school is to make agriculture its epicenter profitable business of agriculture. In the early days graduates of the programme were allotted lands to practice farming. With this strong emphasis on agriculture the school excelled in cattle judging and other aspects of animal husbandry. So much so that students were sent to represent Jamaica in England at the annual cattle judging shows. The school also played a part in helping the parish of St. Catherine to win the champion parish award at the Annual All Island Agricultural Show at Denbigh..

Dinthill Now Dinthill Technical High School now has a new improved physical setting, which reflects the outlook leading into the new millennium.An attractive serene environment that boasts a rejuvenated orchard and horticulture. These give pleasure to the eyes of the passers-by and warmly greet the staff, students and the visitors alike as they enter. The agricultural programme is undergoing a facelift as Dinthill revisits its roots. This is enhanced by the Annual Agricultural Show. The students are being highly trained, to gain knowledge in the Natural and Social Sciences, Liberal Arts , Industrial Technology and Information Technology as well as to be disciplined in whatever they do.

The school population consists of 1200 day students, 84 academic staff, 14 administrative and 34 ancillary workers and over 500 adults on the evening programme. The Technical High Schools Development Project administered by HEART TRUST/ NTA in collaboration with the Ministry of Education have upgraded the library, computer lab, engineering department, the science lab and the farm.
