Raising up warriors in the battle for Americas youth

A Word from the Director

As I sit to write this I am overwhelmed by the ways I see God at work; in my life, my family, our church, SLY and even beyond. It is easy to look at the tragedy and dysfunction in the world and wonder what God is up to. Then I realize I dont need to know exactly what He is doing. I am reminded of Acts 1:6-8 where the apostles wanted to know when the Lord would come back. Jesus reply was , "It is not for you to know the time . . . but when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you shall be my witnesses." So often, I want to see the long-term plan laid out like a road map so I can pick the best route and know what to expect around every corner. But God doesnt give us that information. He wants us to depend on Him for every step. Too often I have been guilty of setting my own course and asking God to bless it rather than truly seeking Him, the full council of His Word and His Spirit to guide me. I am learning that how busy I am is in direct proportion to how much I am trying to do on my own. When life gets crazy and I cant find time to keep my priorities straight, it is usually because I am living in my own power. Conversely, when I walk in Gods power my schedule is much more relaxed, I have time to keep the most important things as top priority and my stress level is reduced. We see this in the life of Jesus. He only had three years to accomplish all the Father had given him to do and He did it all. From the cross He said, It is finished. In my humanness, when I see the goals God has laid out for me, my natural tendency is to work harder to maximize accomplishments. The example Jesus set it is quite different. He accomplished a great deal, but we see all throughout the gospels that Jesus consistently withdrew to a solitary place, sometimes alone, other times with His disciples. Whatever the situation, Jesus recognized the need for rest, reflection, solitude and communion with the Father. In our fast-paced world people are more connected than ever. We get frustrated if we cant reach someone on a cell phone or if they dont reply to an email within a few hours. What if we occasionally took some time away from every distraction to spend time with the Lord? I dont know exactly but I intend to find out. If it has been a while since you spent an extended time with our Lord, I encourage you to join me in making that a priority. I look forward to updating you in upcoming reports on what God teaches me through these times. God Bless, Wayne Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Phil. 1:6

The Well
We've decided to call our new headquarters building The Well. In Bible times the well was a meeting place and a source of life-giving water. Jesus met the Samaritan woman at a well and offered her the water that would "spring up into eternal life." It is our desire that this building would be a meeting place for teen events, as well as volunteer training with the ultimate goal of offering eternal life. One of the Rebekahs that was instrumental in helping us purchase the building mentioned that the Old Testament story of Rebekah also began at a well.

Terry Butcher has served on SLY's board of directors since its beginning in 2007. He has agreed to take on a more active role in the day to day administration of the ministry. He will function as our Chief Operating Officer, leading the new administrative team. He is a computer "techie", has a crazy sense of humor, and he and his wife, Janet, have two teenagers. Jeremy Ashmoore has been a SLY Board member since 2010. He has volunteered to be Head of Physical Resources to oversee and maintain our building, vehicles, tent, and other physical assets. Jeremy is a self-employed cabinet maker. His wife, Bethany, is going to be our Head of Finances, Accounting, and Donor Relations. She has been the bookkeeper for their business and comes with a number of years of experience. They have worked with the Plummer youth group in the past and they have 4 young children. Our new Head of Human Resources is Jay Waddell. She has extensive experience in administration and personnel management. She also supplies snacks and laughs. All of these positions are volunteer at present but will be funded as the Lord provides. Denise Floch will continueto be in charge of promotional literature and publications.

It made me feel kind of helpless knowing afterwards, that I have no girls are in loving, capable hands! Afterwards I also thought, "How amazing that something I learned in youth group years ago and the faith that I grew up with in a Christian home could be brought to Ireland and multiplied!" Thank you to those who invested in me all of these years! Your investment is spreading and Christ is proclaimed!"

Eve Family News

The past year has brought a lot of changes for the Eve family. Wayne has been able to be home more which has been a good thing for the whole family. Shannon continues to maintain a busy home, hostess church and youth events, teach a Bible study, help with Red Zone, and home-school three children. In order to supplement their income and fund the growing needs of SLY, they are starting a new business, The Old Firehouse Thrift and Gift. Come check it out one block off of Highway 95 on Highway 5 in Plummer. (You guessed it! It is in the old firehouse.) Montana is growing up way too quickly. She has an incredible imagination that keeps her siblings and playmates entertained. The family isn't keeping a horse this year but she is hoping there will be one sometime in her near future. Great news! She goes into Spokane for an infusion every 4 weeks and the meds are keeping the pain and swelling of JRA under control like never before. The semiannual checkups at Children's Hospital in Seattle have everyone smiling. Emma often has a delightful smile and twinkle in her eye. She too is creative in the games she makes up. spot when the weather isn't nice enough to be sledding. She has a collection of Schleich animals and a priority list for which animal she wants next. Micah is loving school much more than either of his sisters. Recently he discovered that a calculator is almost as good at math as he is. There are noises coming out of his mouth constantly, sometimes they make sense. He is in constant motion because if he stops for long he falls asleep.

News from our Student Development Sites

Plummer Red Zone meets on Monday evenings for dinner and uses the high school gym for game time. Several college age students are apprenticing in leadership roles as we study Josh McDowell's Is Christ Really God? Please pray that this group of young students will consistently grow in their spiritual walk. Fernwood has been the site of two mission trips and some open gym nights but is not currently hosting a regular meeting. There is a couple prepared to start a group as soon as schedules are cleared and we can choose a day to meet . Please pray for these volunteers and the time needed to get started. Potlatch has a group of young leaders that have stepped up to the plate and started a group that meets on Thursday nights to study Doctrine by Francis Chan. They are quickly outgrowing the local teen center where they currently meet. Please pray that God will provide the space they need. Harrison Teens meet on Monday nights at 6pm. We enjoy amazing dinners provided by people in the church, some crazy games, and student led worship most weeks at Harrison Community Baptist Church. We are finishing up a series on Gods call for us to love and serve those who need to know Jesus. Please pray that this group of young people would put their faith into action as they find creative ways to reach out.
