the return of the sun, the 17th Annual Whole School
Spring Market comes along to help us with this celebration

U19 Film Festival
Te spring of 2014 marks the 7th annual Under 19 Film
Festival. Te Rossland Council for Arts and Culture and
the newly formed Rossland Youth Action Network are
collaborating on this years festival, held on May 3, at the
Rossland Miners Hall and an anchor event among the
various activities hosted during Rossland Youth Week,
May 1 7. Expect to see another remarkable display of
short feature flms produced by local youth, as the festival
is the only one of its sort in our region.
Local participants aged 10-19 years from the West Koo-
tenay area are invited to submit short flms (10 minutes
in length maximum) in six categories from documentary
to sports and adventure. New this year is the addition of
short, under 19 second Mini-clips.
Te U19 event is driven by a youth planning commit-
tee, consisting of local youth from the Greater Trail Area,
which plans and determines the direction of the flm fes-
tival from beginning to end with the guidance and sup-
port of a coordinator. Te youth are involved in all aspects
of planning the festival, including writing grants, making
budgets, designing the format of the festival, providing
input on outreach and communications and running the
actual event. Tey decide on the winning categories, the
overall theme for the festival and also act as MCs of the
event. Tis form of organization and planning leads to
a uniquely diferent festival each year from themes to
decorations, one is certain to experience an event that is
refreshing and inspiring.
Many local businesses and corporations sponsor this
event each year. Without their fnancial contributions and
in-kind donations, this event could not take place.

Northern Trail Spring
Closure
In consultation with BC Conserv-
ation Of cer Service, regional bear
biologists and the Ministry of For-
ests, Lands and Natural Resource
Operations, the Regional District of
Central Kootenay (RDCK) is initi-
ating an annual spring closure for a
portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great
Northern Trail. It is felt that an an-
nual closure will help ensure pub-
lic safety and beneft the local bear
population from over exposure.
Te annual closure will include
the trail south of Cottonwood
Lake parking area to Hall Siding.
Te closure will begin from April
22 until June 15. Signs will be
posted accordingly at the entrance
to trail closures.
Collared bear data has shown
the area from Cottonwood Lake to
Hall siding, particularly the areas of
Apex and Camp Busk, are heavily
used by grizzly bears in the spring.
Te bears use this area because of its
high valued forage habitat. In most
cases the bears move on to higher
elevations by the middle of June.
As black bear and grizzly bear ac-
tivity is common in the spring and
early summer, bears may be present
on the trail system throughout the
year so please remember to always
use caution, do not attempt to view
or approach bears, and do not leave
garbage or food on trails. Please re-
spect all closures.

walk (20 minutes) to promote the importance of physical
activity for better health. And to keep track of their steps
to better health, the frst 25 participants in each com-

Physical activity has been proven in study afer study
to be one of the most important factors in maintaining
good health, said Dr. Lee MacKay, board chair of the
Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice. Regu-
lar walking has been shown to lower the risk of develop-
ing type 2 diabetes, as well as heart disease and stroke,
lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, reduce body
fat, enhance mental well-being, increase bone density,

Students Field Trip
Selkirk College Forest Technology Program students
deepened their understanding of British Columbias di-
verse terrain with a trip to the west coast of Vancouver
Island earlier this month. Te annual feld trip included
16 second-year students who spent a week hiking and
exploring ecosystems outside the West Kootenay terrain
where the program is based.
Te coast and the interior are really diferent in terms
of forest practices, forest operations and the ecology, says
Selkirk College Forest Technology Instructor Jesper Niel-
sen. BC is such a huge province and once these students
are registered technologists they could end up practicing
anywhere so going from the interior to the coast can be
like going to a diferent country.
Nielsen and fellow instructor Carol Andrews polled
students at the Castlegar-based program to see where
they wanted to spend the important week. Te consensus
was to head west. Tey had shown an interest in seeing
big trees because those old growth trees on the coast are
not something you see the equivalent of in the interior,
says Nielsen. Tose sites and ecosystems were important
so we planned part of the trip on the West Coast Trail.
Students and instructors hiked 20 km of the West Coast
Trail one day. Tey also did other hikes near Tofno,
viewed an Island Timberlands operation, reviewed a First
Nations tenure, and visited a shake and shingle mill in
Surrey on the way back home.
Te trip was largely funded by the students own hard
work. Students were tasked with cutting and selling a log-
ging truck load of frewood donated by Interfors Nakusp
operation. Tey also performed a variety of feldwork for
the Nakusp and Area Community Forest. Tese com-
munity partnerships are important to the success of this
program, says Nielsen. We are very thankful to both
Interfor and the Nakusp and Area Community Forest for
their contribution to the education of this years class.
With the second year students in the two-year program
now prepared to graduate and head of in all diferent dir-
ections, Nielsen says the trip is likely to be a highlight of
the school year.
In some ways we wish we could do it earlier in the year,
but logistically its not feasible to do that, says Nielsen.
But afer the trip everybody is a lot closer. You get to
know a lot more about people when you go on a road trip.
Its actually a very small industry once you are part of it so
these kinds of bonds will be lasting.
