FROM THE PASTOR

Just a few weeks ago, our church family celebrated Live the Light, a focus on the many ways each of us can bring Jesus light into our community and world. You can find elsewhere in this issue of The Signal some of the inspiring stories and pictures from that great day, but I wanted to remind all of us that our call to take the message of Jesus into a dark and broken world cant be fulfilled in a single day. Instead, every one of us has to grasp the fact that the world is lost and in desperate need of a Savior. Its our privilege and responsibility to take His light into our world. An additional note: I was blessed during our Live the Light focus to visit with our partners and friends in Pelion at Redirect Church. What a great thing God is doing there! Weve talked in the past about the incredible series of divinely-ordered events that led our two congregations together, but to hang out with the congregation there and meet first-hand many of the gracious people, well, that was just overwhelming. Thank you, LBC, for your vision and generosity in giving, so that ministries like Redirect Church and many others can continue reaching the lost. If you or someone you know is interested in exploring church membership here at LBC, we have a special opportunity for you. Our Dinner with the Pastor is coming up the first Sunday in May. This is one of my favorite events, when Pam and I get to meet with some of the many people the Lord is leading into our congregation. Some come to us from other churches, others are moving into our community and some always come to faith in Jesus through the dinner. Im always excited to see how the Lord is dealing in peoples lives through the ministries of LBC. So, if you want to know more about our church or how you can directly connect with our congregation, go to our website or email Robin Inman at rinman@ lexingtonbaptist.org for more information. Pam and I would love to see you here. Im super excited about our new childrens ministry this summer: the LexKids Summer Road Trip! Please take a moment and learn about how your family- as well as the families of your neighbors- can be blessed this summer with this new, fresh approach to family ministry. Finally, note that were bringing Christian recording artist and worship leader Al Denson back for a special Lords Supper service on Sunday morning, May 25. Al was with us last fall and led our church family into the presence of the Lord in a remarkable way. I cant wait for him to return. Youll want to make plans now to be here. Note that well still be in our regular Sunday morning schedule. See you Sunday, Pastor Mike

Welcome Spring!
Spring is here and the weather is finally letting us spend time outdoors. You really have to take advantage of these days because before you know it, Ill be talking to you about cranking up your air conditioners and staying cool indoors. One of the things I love about South Carolina is that we really dont experience completely miserable temperatures. That being said, what do you plan to do with the coming days of great weather? Let me suggest going for a walk, exercising a little and enjoying some time planting new flowers or vegetables. I want to see you around for a long time and how you treat your body is an important factor in getting to do just that. A recent study reported that elderly people who have a positive outlook, lower stress levels... and no chronic health conditions are more likely to thrive in their old age (Hanson, Baby Boomers and Beyond, p. 38). There is nothing in the Bible that tells us to avoid eating ice cream or that we must spend 40 minutes on the treadmill every day. However, the Bible does teach that we need to treat our bodies as belonging to God and not to ourselves. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Honoring God with our bodies means taking care of ourselves the best we can so that we can serve Him as long as He wants. Do what you can to get out and enjoy what God is up to around here. Blessings!

Student Ministry Families,

I cant believe summer is just around the corner. The month of May will be filled with the celebration of our Senior Class. I am so thankful for this Class of 2014, and I cant wait to see what God has in store for these students. Church, you will have the chance to congratulate this senor class on May 18th. Seniors will wear their caps and gowns, and we will honor them in both our 9 and 10:30 services. If you are a parent of a graduating senior, make sure you dont miss out on our Senior Blessing Night on Friday, May 16th. You can register you and your student for this event by emailing me at ian@lexingtonbaptist.org. The Student Ministry is heading to Journey Camp in June, and we are finishing up our reservations. We only have a few spots left and would hate for your student to miss out on this life changing week. If you need information or would like to RSVP for your student, please shoot me an email. God has been so faithful to our ministry this school year. We have watched as students who were dead in their sins come to life in Christ. We have seen numerous students baptized and set on fire for Christ. Our high school leadership students have served inside and outside of this church with energy and excitement to see a community and culture changed for Jesus. If you are reading this and you are looking for a place that your students can call home, LBC Student Ministry is that place. We would love to meet you and help connect your child into this ministry. If you have any questions and/or concerns feel free to contact me anytime. God Bless,

A Heart for Missions

Many of us were impressed with the turn-out and support for our churchwide Live the Light and Loving Lexington emphasis last month. We saw hundreds of shoes being donated to go to places like Central America where there is a need to be met. I was so encouraged to see students jumping in and taking the lead in collecting these shoes, and even bringing awareness to the need by going barefoot on that morning. As Ive reflected over Shoeless Sunday and the TOMS paint party, Im confident in saying that our students have seen our churchs heart for missions. Because they have seen so many adults, families and leaders taking charge in various missions ministries at LBC, they are not going to be satisfied in sitting back quietly- theyre taking ownership in reaching the community and the world for Christ. Im so proud to be a part of a group that has compassion for others, just like Jesus did.

The Toughest Job Youll Ever Love

Being a mom is one of the greatest gifts and one of the greatest responsibilities that God has blessed me with. Through my children, God has taught me the act of selflessness. It is like giving up the biggest piece of cake or the last popsicle and being okay with that because it pleased my heart so to see that happy face when my children received it instead. My heart has been stretched in ways I never thought possible, and with this, God has taught me unconditional love. No matter what they do or have done, no matter what they say or will say, I will love them unconditionally. I will be there for them no matter what. I am their biggest fan. Being a mom is also very humbling. Of all the things I have done in life, I never have wanted so badly to get everything right and yet know that I would not, but God has been with me every step of the way. God has shown me how to be kind but honest; to be gentle, but strong; to nurture, but encourage independence; to lead by example and show right from wrong. And when the time came, to let go of my children and hope they would become the people that I have prayed for since before they were born. They have completed the circle for me. They are part of me. When people have asked me what is it like being a mom, I tell them it is the toughest job you will ever love, and I give thanks to the Lord for holding my hand and walking along beside me every day. ~ Debbie Jones

LexKids Summer Road Trip

Last year, our ministry saw 43 children come to accept Jesus as their Savior and follow through with baptism- 43! There is a responsibility- a weightiness- that comes with the responsibility of partnering with parents as we lead the children of our church and community into a relationship with God. We take that responsibility very seriously. Week in and week out, we pray that God is glorified and children are reached. Over the last few years, our Next Generation team has prayed about the ways we will accomplish that goal. We believe there are two key components: 1) well-trained and passionate team members and 2) an aligned strategy. The first part is one of my favorite parts we serve with the very best team. These men and women are excited about loving children and leading them to know Jesus. They are consistent, invested and go way beyond Sunday morning. We would love for you to join our team! The second component is our strategy. We developed a discipleship process for not only our kids, but everyone ages birth through 18 years-old. Our nursery volunteers have words for baby as they seek to teach them the name of Jesus as soon as possible. Our preschool leaders create an atmosphere of wonder as they impart a repeated message that God made them, God loves them and Jesus wants to be their friend forever. Our elementary environment is all about relationships and discovery. Every child is grouped in a grade and gender-specific small group where questions are asked, applications are made and relationships are built. Our preschoolers and elementary kids attend a large group time with worship, drama, Bible teaching and games. This discipleship process is the very best thing we offer for our kids at LBC. The purpose of everything we do as a ministry is to support that process. We dont want to simply host an event for kids . . . we want to disciple them! We want every child to learn that a life with Jesus is integrated into every part of their life. And let me tell you, that is a hard thing for our ministry to do with just a few hours every week! Thats why we must leverage the time families have with their children. Summer is full of lazy, hot days with lots of time. We want to take advantage of that time by extending our one-week VBS schedule to nine weekly events throughout the whole summer. Each weekly event will support the overall lesson for the week from Sunday mornings, and well send home lots of reinforcements for families too . . . activities, discussion guides, games and more that will keep your kids busy and learning throughout the whole summer. Have we mentioned its going to be FUN?!?!?!? Check out the road map for all the details. Heres the coolest part- we want to invite others into our process too! For this reason, weve created the +1 Challenge. It is our prayer that every single family in our church will invite another family in their neighborhoods, sports teams, classes, etc. to road trip with them. We cant wait for your family to join us this summer as we head out for our LexKids Summer Road trip!

You can preview our Road Map to the right, but make sure to pick up your own in the Childrens Lobby Maegan Bolding today- go to lbcroadtrip.com for more info! Childrens Ministries Director

A look back on Live the Light and Loving Lexington

As water reflects a face, so a mans heart reflects the man. - Proverbs 27:19 We are the Body of Christ and April 5th put the spotlight on how we share His Light in the community. Volunteers were working across Lexington County to love the homeless, minister to families and help those in crisis. One of our LBC families moved beyond a day of volunteering to living the light. Linda Lovern, our coordinator for Crisis Ministries, shares: While volunteering alongside the other volunteers of LBC on Saturday, April 5, 2014 for Loving Lexington, I was talking with Michelle Lake and her family. Michelle told me they volunteered last year, and it really touched her daughter Lauras heart. I asked if they brought food to put in the blue bins in their Sunday School class, and she said No. We take our food to LICS ourselves because Laura uses her own money to buy food. If this wasnt enough to make my heart swell, Laura also asked her friends to bring food for LICS to her birthday party. Oh, and Laura Lake is only 9 years-old. What does your heart reflect?
