1. Read all materials provided on teacher evaluation (Module 12) and use internet resources as needed. 2. Describe and evaluate the pros and cons of current teacher evaluation practices. Be sure to address the following: edTPA SGO/SLO Danielson framework for teacher evaluation
1. edTPA edTPA is a standardized assessment of teaching in order to obtain your teachers certification. This assessment is geared towards new teachers and making sure that they are ready for the job. Created by Stanford University faculty and staff. The Pros of this system: Gives employers the opportunity to see how educators measure to this exam. The Cons of this system: Its great to have an assessment tool for new teachers but if the student takes on 4 years of school, passes student teaching, and the praxis (meeting the states requirements) why add on more assessing of the teacher? ** Especially if there is constant evaluation going on throughout the teaching career** The exam that will be needed for the assessment will cost about $300 The candidates are required for teachers to submit photos of them working with k12 students 2. Student Goals Objectives (SGO) / Student Learning Objectives (SLO): (definition as per NJ state website) Student Goals objectives are goals for groups of students that are aligned to state standards and can be tracked using objective measures. Each teacher sets these goals and has input from their approved supervisor and or principal. Student learning objectives are units targeted to looking at what students need to know and be able to do within the unit. This assessment particularly lasts six weeks and it clarifies the level expected from the standards. The Pros of this system: Student objective goals/ Student learning objectives are great tools to use in the classroom, that in a way give teachers a road map to how to direct the classroom. These goals are established n the beginning of the year and students take a pre exam before the knowledge is really solid, then they take a post exam. These exams can show the teacher how far theyve come and where she/he still needs to go to get the students to excelling above and beyond.

The Cons of this system: If SGOs/ SLOs are not met in some states from my knowledge at parkway elementary, teachers (regardless of tenure) can lose their jobs and or lower pay because students dont reach those goals. Some students are just not going to reach the potential that is needed in the class, and its not because they dont know it, but its simply because they may need more time to understand. That amount of time may take longer than just one year. Its difficult to show evidence of individual student progress. 3. Marzanos Teacher Evaluation: (definition as per Marzanos website): The Marzano Teacher Evaluation Model identifies a complete set of practices directly related to improved student performance, organized into four domains that develop teacher expertise. Like the Danielson Framework of teaching this model is broken down into categories giving teachers a way of looking at their teaching methods and how they can make their classrooms better! Pros of this system: This system focuses directly on the teachers performance and the work the teacher is doing directly in the classroom. This system is broken down into four categories so again its great that its broken down and teachers are able to see exactly how they fit into each domain. This system requires the teacher to really have a self-evaluation of their teaching and how it translates in the classroom. Cons of this system: From the website, its a little confusing to understand the items in each of the domains. Domain number 4 is contingent upon the environment you set for Domains 1-3.

4. Danielson (4) Domains of teaching: Danielsons Framework for teaching (definition as per The Danielson Group): The Framework for Teaching is a research-based set of components of instruction, aligned to the INTASC standards, and grounded in a constructivist view of learning and teaching. The complex activity of teaching is divided into 22 components (and 76 smaller elements) clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility: 1. 2. 3. Planning and Preparation Classroom Environment Instruction

Professional Responsibilities

Basically the Frameworks for teaching by Danielson is a way to look at teachers and their teaching in specific aspect of the classroom, and how they fit into the four categories above. Through this very specific system, teachers are able to really understand where they need to be in the classroom, and where they need to approve.

The Pros of this system: There is an organized way of looking at standards and how they are broken down into categories. You as the educator only make yourself better by reaching those standards. The Cons of this system: There are A LOT of standards in each category that needs to be addressed. If teachers dont feel efficient in a certain category, it might be difficult to fulfill that particular domain.
