How can you recognize our church as a resurrection community? Is a resurrection church a place where people never disagree with each other or have to work through differing points-of-view? I think not. In any church where people are expressing themselves openly and honestly, and each person feels like his or her voice is respected and honored, I would expect disagreements. I would be more interested in observing how that church addresses disagreements when they arise. I believe it is there that I would discover whether or not this is a resurrection church. In a resurrection church, people have experienced God restoring to life individuals who were spiritually dead. Resurrected church people have also seen God breathe life into institutions, programs, and ministries they might have given up for dead. People in such a church have every confidence that God is powerful enough to handle any challenge that the church might face. Resurrected church people are not afraid of challenges because they know God is revealed through people with differing ideas, needs, and desires choosing to work side by side to face and overcome challenges. In a resurrection church, people know that Jesus is Lord because they have witnessed Christ doing within them and others works they could never have accomplished otherwise. They have reconciled estranged relationships, and released hurts, fears, and resentments powerful enough to destroy other organizations because they have turned their life and their will over to the Risen One. When people have given Christ lordship in their lives, they are quick to say, please forgive me, I forgive you, and thank you! They dont take things personally. They understand that everyone is human and can make mistakes. They trust Christ to transform everyone in their church as they love, forgive, and express constant gratitude. The resurrected church is not a place of uninterrupted harmony, but a place of compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. People in a resurrected church occasionally offend each other, hurt one anothers feelings, and even overlook one anothers needs and desires. They are human. Resurrected church people are aware of their humanness, but they are not afraid to make a mistake or inadvertently offend someone because they know that their sisters and brothers in Christ will assume they meant no harm and lovingly confront them with any offense they have felt. Are you committed to forgiving, asking forgiveness, and expressing gratitude? Are you determined to offer one of these three responses as often as possible, especially in relationship to your fellow church members? If you answered in the affirmative, youre part of the reason, we are a resurrection church! A resurrected church is a place where people offer their gifts freely, unafraid that they will be rejected or shunned because their gift is different, new, or innovative, or conversely, tried, tested, and traditional. In a resurrected church, age does not make anything sacred or obsolete. Resurrected church people know God can work through long-standing traditions and fresh innovations, and they work to listen to each others needs, desires, disappointments, and celebrations. They trust that God can do through them what they could never do themselves, and that gives them the confidence to welcome and affirm, forgive and reconcile, support and challenge one another. I give thanks that First Christian Church of Fullerton is a resurrection church! Happy Easter everyone! Peace,

Todays the Day

Coffee Lovers, Tea Drinkers, Chocolate Eaters, Cocoa Sippers, Cookie Bakers!!!

Look for our table outside next to the Coffee Cart. Stop by, have a sample of coffee, look at the catalog, and buy something that could make a huge difference in the lives of so many people. This is an on-going effort on the part of the Outreach Ministry, so we will always have an order form available to you. By choosing Fair Trade coffees, chocolates and organic teas you benefit the small farmer, workers, and artisans by raising and stabilizing their incomes and allowing them to be in charge of their own future. By purchasing Fair Trade products, the smallscale farmer earns more and you get a better value for your money. Also, purchasing fairly traded products through the Disciples of Christ Coffee Project, you are directly supporting the Disciples Home Missions (DMF) and Week of Compassion (WoC). Last year, congregations and communities across the US purchased over $795,000 pounds of fairly traded products from Equal Exchange. As a result, Equal Exchange contributed over $116,000 to our faith partners, a portion of which went to DHM and WOC. Check out the catalog and see the tempting delicacies that are available for purchase. Supplies are available in the church office if you would like to purchase during the week.

Pathways of Hope Second Step Program Soon to be Renamed.

Beginning on Sunday, May 4, we will begin collecting donations for the Pathways of Hope Second Step Program which was first mentioned in the Caller on March 23. To reiterate, our friends at Pathways of Hope are nearing completion of eight new apartments in Fullerton to house families from their New Vista Program which offers transitional housing for employable adults with dependent children. Guests are offered food and housing and work side by side with their case managers to set goals. Support includes life skills class, budgeting, computer lab, career development, job search assistance, child care assistance and counseling.

Guests are expected to obtain a full-time job within 30 days of entering program and be able to save 80% of adjusted income. The main goal of Pathways is for families to obtain permanent housing and employment as quickly as possible. The funds to construct these apartments came from generous donations from the local community, the State of California, the County of Orange, the City of Fullerton, and the Federal Home Loan Bank. These facilities will be used to house residents who will be part of what is being called Second Step which allows someone currently furthering their education the time to complete their studies and find a good paying job, guided by job search professionals available through Pathways of Hope. Some are working to get their GED, and others are taking college or technical courses, looking forward to employment that can lead to advancement and success. Those who have accumulated debts will have a bit more time to clear them up. Second Step is part of the healing process that some of the families at New Vista need to get back on their feet financially and emotionally. The apartment buildings are paid for. But these eight apartments need to be completely furnished before the dedication on May 20th and families who have graduated from New Vista move in. This is where we at F.C.C.F. can have a vital part in the Second Step Program. The Outreach Ministry decided in March to give our congregation the opportunity during the first few weeks in May to participate in this effort of furnishing the new apartments. This is what our contributions will purchase: A gift of $50 will provide a set of dishes; $100 a set of cookware; $250 bed and bath linens for one apartment; $500 will supply a dinette set; $1,000 the beds for one apartment. If we raise $2,500, we could provide a living room, or $5,000 will furnish one whole apartment. Checks should be made out to F.C.C.F with Second Step written on the memo line. Our coordinator for this project, Phil Forbes, will be in the Narthex before and after the 10:15 A.M. services starting on May 11th to assist in the collection of your donations.

Love Fullerton Project

Love Fullerton is going to be epic!! A group of ministers in the Fullerton area have joined together to implement the first annual citywide service day called Love Fullerton on May 17, 2014. It is a partnership of 20+ churches, city government, the Mayor and City Council, the Chief of Police, local businesses, service organizations, public and private education, and local residents all working together to enhance the world-class experience of living and working in our city. The mission of this project is to demonstrate kindness, meet needs and impact lives together. We are planning for 2,000 volunteers serving at 50+ different work projects. Along the way well paint benches, teach life skills to at risk youth and spruce up some neighborhoods. The day begins with opening festivities at 8 A.M. which includes free food and vendors followed by a rally at 9 A.M. on the plaza at Harbor and Wilshire Ave (121 E. Wilshire Ave). After the brief rally, volunteers will connect with project leaders for final instructions and head off to work by 9:30A.M. Then at 1 P.M. everyone will gather back together at Hillcrest Park and enjoy lunch together (compliments of Jack Franklyn of Heroes). Go to http://loverourcitiesprojects.com/projects/ fullerton and check out the list or look on the bulletin board over the water fountain. I will be leading a Brunch and Fun Day at the Grand Inn on Euclid and could use some help. I havent decided what we will serve and what we will do yet but it will be fun. So let me know if you would like to join me in serving the families that live in the motels of Fullerton. The best part of Love Fullerton is that it is a catalyst for the other 364 days of the year. Click on Other Love Movements and see how you can be engaged in making a difference throughout the year. Invite a friend, join the movement and lets work together to make Fullerton even better. Thanks for your support of this worthwhile project. Donna Woodbridge

Recap Of The April Outreach Ministry Meeting

During their April 16 meeting, the Outreach Ministry dealt with the following items: 1. Received a progress report on the Easter Offering which stood at $470 after Palm Sunday. 2. Discussed the response to the sale of Equal Exchange Products to date. It was decided to continue offering these products to our members and visitors after worship each Sunday. New ways to inform the congregation about this project were discussed, including handing Darrell a cup of coffee just before the announcements as a reminder of this project. 3. The opening two weeks of the tri-tip sales have gone well with income in excess of $900 each night. The smaller number of volunteers working each time has worked well and responsibilities are more evenly distributed this year. 4. There was a good response to the Soles for Souls project at the end of the first quarter. The donated shoes have been taken to a distribution center by Craig Wallace. This project will be repeated at the end of the second quarter in June. 5. It was reported that we have 13 walkers planning to be part of this year's CROP Hunger Walk. One of our youth, Jeanine Martinez, has already raised over $300 in contributions. The Walk is set for Sunday, April 27. Tee shirts for participants are available from Randy Langston and Phil Forbes. 6. The number of participants for the September Mission Trip to Moore, Oklahoma still stands at five. We are hoping to recruit a couple of women to join the five men who are planning to be part of this trip. An anonymous gift of $1,000 has been received to support this activity, so we have resources to help participants cover the cost. The registration fee is $100. We plan to send in the registration fees by July, if possible. We are still working with people in other congregations across the nation and in our Region to join us for this Mission Trip in the hope that we will have 15 participants by the time it begins on September 28. 7. Plans for our participation in the furnishing of the new apartments being built by Pathways of Hope for their Second Step program were shared by Phil Forbes, Coordinator of this project. Look for article with more details elsewhere in this issue of the Caller. 8. Julie Stuart showed us a number of cloth bags that she and a friend have made for the School Kits Project we'll be doing in late June. She and Mary Anne Richmond will coordinate this project for us. 9. Craig Wallace reported that the first Saturday workday for Habitat for Humanity's La Habra Project is likely to be June 7. He is going to set up a workday for our congregation that will be open to 10 volunteers. Watch for details in the weeks ahead. 10. A date for the 2014 Offering of Letters, as coordinated by Bread for the World, will be set at next month's meeting. 11. It was decided that the congregation will be a tee sponsor for the Don Shelton Memorial Golf Tournament set for September 22nd. A gift of $500 for this purpose will be sent in by August 15. This continues our record of being one of the sponsors of this event each year since its inception in 2004. 12. We discussed the possibility of our congregation being part of the current effort to establish an Endowment Fund for the Week of Compassion. This will be discussed further at our next meeting. When a decision has been made concerning this matter it will be presented to the Council of Elders and, ultimately, to the congregation for approval since this would represent a significant financial commitment to be made over a period of time. During our meeting, we remembered Harold Horn who, for the past 40 to 50 years, was one of the most enthusiastic members of the Outreach Ministry. With Harold's death, our congregation has lost one who by word and deed consistently called us to support the outreach ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He will be missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire the work of the Outreach Ministry Ed Linberg, Chair, Outreach Ministry 9
