Philosophy of Education
My philosophical belief about education is that it should be focused, equally, towards both academic content and character building. I believe in the idealist philosophy that there should be a discipleship between teachers and students. This belief presents the idea that the teacher must first build that relationship with the student so that a Socratic education can develop. The developing of a relationship leads to the development of a students character. I believe that the teacher should serve as the character model. True education must focus on academic content and the practice of character building because these are two key components in survival in society. Academic content, is necessary in survival to know how to speak properly, write, problem solve, and identify with ones culture in history in order to survive in the current technological-controlled society. But along with this academic content, must come the morals and values that are necessary for one to become a fully functional, positive member of society. I believe in the idealist approach to the education process. The student can only fully understand and clam the knowledge as their own if they go through the process of being educated. Students decide they want to be educated and start to expand their thoughts when it is fully understood. The idealist curriculum uses relationships between symbols to learn certain disciplines. I believe it is up to the instructor to use real applications when teaching students that they can start to draw conclusions about the knowledge. He must be able to reach his visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners all at the same time. The curriculum must contain a wide variety of subject matter, concepts, and ideas. This will allow students to become well- rounded. Well-roundedness seems to be a trait that most successful individuals have. If the students are becoming well-rounded individuals in school, their chances at being successful and/or being given the opportunity to network with successful individuals becomes greater. I believe the role of the teacher should be that of a model because the students should be active in their learning process. The teacher must be there to support and guide the students with this process. The teachers role is to present the students with the material and to guide them along with their learning process. My philosophy of education consists of an idealist approach to instruction by an instructor using the Socratic Method in which the instructor is the academic and character model. The curriculum being taught consists of a variety of subject matter to allow the student to become well-rounded individuals who can properly and positively function in society.
